Still, acceptance and recognition on the part of the mainstream has not kept pace. We have suggested outgroup mobility threat (OMT), the fear of being overtaken by intergenerational mobility, as one possible explanation. However, Richard Alba has argued that demographic changes widely lead to a non-zero-sum mobility and do not necessarily cause competition threat. In this paper, we relate Richard Alba's reasoning to the concept of OMT, focusing on the German immigration context. We bring together the arguments by distinguishing between realistic and symbolic threat and by differentiating between occupations and groups. We measure OMT and test our hypotheses using a vignette study that we recently conducted as part of the kick-off survey of the new National Discrimination and Racism Monitor (NaDiRa) in Germany. Our results confirm that Richard Alba's argument is superior to the simple competitive threat perspective. However, we also show that it is still insufficient, and OMT comes into play when immigrant groups move up into value-based occupations that are assumed to normatively shape society. Moreover, we demonstrate that this threat is felt particularly when Muslims ascend to these types of occupations.

First, it provides a literature review of research on group radicalization and, second, building on previous research about narratives and their influence on radicalization, it introduces a new concept for comparative radicalization studies: bridging narratives. We use this term to address commonalities in the ideological elements found across various radicalized groups. As narratives shape perceptions of the world and guide processes of identification, they assume an important (internal) function in group formation. At the same time, various radical groups (ethnic nationalists, Salafist-jihadists and militant leftists) share core ideological elements, commonalities that can lead to the creation of new coalitions and unexpected alliances (an external function). The common factor among them are constructed conceptions of the adversary – be they modernity, universalism, Jewish people or feminism. Such constructions allow for the fabrication of an enemy as well as specific conceptions of hierarchical social orders. We analyze two examples in this context: anti-feminism (including heroic or toxic masculinity) and the resistance dispositif that promotes vigilante terrorism. This approach allows us to investigate processes of group radicalization while also taking into account their ideological content as well as the formal effects of such content on processes of group-building and the dynamics of radicalization. In the final section, we provide recommendations for action.

Adapting Axel Honneth and Ferdinand Sutterlüty’s model of normative paradox, we show how the ongoing process of social integration of Muslims produces reverse effects of disrespect. The refusal to grant fundamental rights to minorities calls into question not only the recently created image of Germany as a new nation of immigrants, but also constitutional principles of the democratic state. While German legislation clearly protects the rights of minorities, when it comes to the attitudes of the population in Germany toward Muslims as the biggest religious minority in the country, there is a reservoir of antidemocratic attitudes that must be taken into account. This article presents the first results of a representative telephone survey conducted among German citizens, with more than 8,000 respondents.

This act of recognition changed the political and legal landscape as demands for political, social and cultural rights suddenly became legitimate. Society responded both in support and rejection for these new demands, creating a cleaveage between pro- and anti-diversity positionings. This ambivalence becomes particularly apparent when discussing the situation of Muslims in Germany: Grounded with empirical data this paper shows how the implementation of minority rights is cognitively accepted, while rejected and disapproved of in connection with Muslims in Germany.
