At the assassination site, a spontaneous memorial was formed after some of the activists organized a regular supervision of the spot. The memorial has been sustained for more than two years, despite numerous attempts to destroy it. The attacks on the Nemtsov Bridge are initiated by the communal service «Gormost» (“City Bridge Service”, with an occasional support from the local police) and by Nemtsov’s ideological opponents. The study considers the Nemtsov Bridge through the lens of social anthropology as a center of symbolic interaction (Chapter V) and as a specific case of a spontaneous commemorative practice (Chapter VI). The study uses discourse analysis of original interviews and quantitative and qualitative content analysis of the participant observation data. The theory rests upon the dramaturgical model of sociology presented by Erving Goffman. Chapter I presents the history of the memorial with an original detailization of the periods (divided into periods). In Chapter II, I describe how the activists routinely take care of the memorial. Specifically, I consider the community of dezhurnye, literally “activists on duty”, as a unique social group. I study their coordinated actions on and off duty. Then, I reconstruct the ritualization at the memorial; the «economy» of the memorial; the motivation of participants; the meaningness of conflicts; and analyze their attitude to “be always on duty” at the assassination site. Chapter III is focused on the opponents of the memorial. I specifically consider two parts of their rhetoric: the attitude toward the personality of Boris Nemtsov and the attitude toward his memorialization. The assassination provoked symbolic interaction (Chapter IV). The assassination site and the spontaneous memorial organized there became a spatial interaction center. The interaction emerges between the activists preserving the memory of Nemtsov, and the actors representing the “power” (due to their official duties, ideological positions, or administrative and economic necessity). The participants of the interaction contextualize the assassination of Nemtsov in the current political agenda. The symbolic statements are made with a visual design of a memorial through producing posters for the mourning processions and spreading messages in mass media. Also, they include various social activities primarily aimed at maintaining or destroying the memorial. The interaction takes place within three separate discourses: political, thanatological, and legal. First, the actions of activists are in fact a continuation of Nemtsov’s political activity: they symbolically represent the issues he focused on (the vocal opposition to the “authorities”, individual civic engagement, the international relations with Ukraine, and others). The actions of the ideological opponents of the memorial are guided by political phobias spread in the Russian society. Second, the death corrects actions of the participants of interaction (both those of the activists and of the representatives of the “authorities”). The commemorative quality of practices makes it possible to avoid defining what is happening as a political street action (an installation). Third, the legal discourse determines the interpretation of various actions in legal terms. In the situation of uncertainty which has arisen around the memorial, this discourse is the easiest and most convenient for the interaction. Chapter V shows that the Nemtsov Bridge case generally corresponds to the current worldwide trends in the emergence of spontaneous commemoration. In Russia, over the past decades, there have been many cases of spontaneous emergence of the street memorials of political significance. One of the promising approaches to the consideration of spontaneous political commemoration is the dramaturgical model of sociology (E. Goffman).

The same lamp was widely used by east Slavs during Christmas ritual excesses. Probably, the similarity of ritual objects is caused by the similarity of social conditions which have generated them. The existence of common roots and a genetic linkage seems to be unlikely.
