The objective of this work is to explain the systemic thinking in the project activities, mapping the existing relationships in the production of the bilingual educational materials in the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC/Palhoca), Brazil. We employ a descriptive and qualitative approach, in which data collection was performed through a semi-structured interview. Results point to the need for a systemic view from all of the members involved in the process – the reason why we present a systemic diagram that allows a comprehensive visualization of the project for the designing of bilingual educational resources.

Abstract This article discusses the role of design in society, viewing the profession as a trainer of material culture, responsible for producing products and meanings and encouraging consumption. From that, faced with the paradigm of design, where we need to rethink and broaden the professional focus projetual, compared to the economic, social and especially environmental. Keywords: Design; material culture; sustainability.

This article discusses the relationship between design and education from a semiotic perspective, within the scope of two possibilities for constructing meaning for social and environmental development. We start from the following understanding: the designer is responsible for the creation of visual messages, products and services of complex significance and, thus, the professional contributes to the generation of knowledge, in addition to influencing habits, attitudes and behaviors. With the theoretical basis referring to phenomenology in Peirce, the text articulates design and education through two master's dissertations in progress in the Programa de pós-graduação em Design da Rio Grande do Sul - PGDesign / UFRGS. One of these surveys deals with valuing the teaching of Design for Sustainability in an undergraduate course in Design, and the second, on exhibition design and public perception. Throughout the work, the authors infer about their studies as alternatives that seek to validate the social vector of design.
