To approach the question of children in rock art, we explore the context in which, out of the tens of thousands of paintings in rock shelters and of engravings on open-air rocks, there are only 168 representations of children in the Sahara between the VIIth millennium BCE and the end of the Ist millennium ACE. We have also adopted a diachronic approach, drawing upon recent research into the anthropology of
childhood in West Africa, in order to consider the following questions.
Could the general absence of representations of babies, with the exception of one nursing infant, be explained by a fear that genies could somehow impair the health of the child through these images? Could the rare presence of children, exclusively in the two to five age range, in ancient anthropocentric painted expressions, be due to the relationship these little subjects had with the invisible world from which they were supposed to have come? Might the rarity of images of children over the age of two in compositions depicting the world of pastoralism reflect their limited contribution to the pastoral economy? Was the unusual inclusion of figures of children alongside majestic portrayals of men and women of the first warrior aristocracies a projection of the permanence of aristocratic power?

Several areas of the bush were thus progressively marked with images of men, women, children, more or less close deceased ancestors, genies and beasts. Ordinary at the origin, these sectors became the territories of the authors of these representations, i.e. lands that they considered to have been inhabited for a long time, perhaps since time immemorial, by their forebears, which sectors were nonetheless inhabited by extraordinary entities with whom mediations were required. These ancient paintings, predominantly anthropomorphic, would thus be consubstantial with local phenomena of ancestralisation-territorialisation. Iconographic, archaeological and palaeoecological data agree in dating these pictorial expressions between the end of the 7th and 4th millennia BC.

Nearly four hundred comparable motifs are known in the Saharan strip from the Niger-Chad border to the Atlantic coast. A terracotta figurine from the Lower Tilemsi, and twelve stone statuettes from the southern Algerian Sahara can be compared to these engravings based on morphological and stylistic criteria. The iconographic and archæological contexts of these engravings allow us to situate their realization between the end of the Vth millennium and the middle of the IInd millennium BC. The aridity then increased. Animal husbandry became used, and pearl millet was cultivated in the Malian Sahara. The agro-pastoral economy tipped West Africa into protohistory. The quasi-systematic exposure of the ovals to the sky, their chimerical character, their intermeshing of animal and human figures, the parallels that are established between the iconography they belong to, and data drawn from West African ethnography, all lead us to see representations of genies perhaps connected to rain.

Abstract : The horses which pulled the chariots in the Sa-hara at high speed were small-sized. A team of two horses would have needed about two kilograms of pearl millet to cover their energy requirements at the end of each sportive outing. This quantity of grains corresponds to a meal eaten by four or five adults people in the Sahara and Sahel regions. The bulls (Bos taurus) pulled the chariots at a slow speed. Grazing would have provided sufficient caloric intake to cover their moderate work. Different food requirements for draft animals involved different socioeconomic and political organizations, which may be better understood through current-day African rural life in regions which practise animal traction in cultivation with horses or bulls.

In 1861, Henri Duveyrier learned from Toubous the existence of ruts in the ground which could have been made by carts harnessed to zebus, in the south west of present day Libya. This hypothesis was made more credible by the presence of engravings depicting similar harnesses on nearby rocks. Using this information – but without actually visiting the site – and inspired not only by Herodotus’ Vth century B.C. texts which stated that the Garamantes present in the area did indeed possess carts, but also by the fact that three military expeditions were conducted by the Romans in that same area at the beginning of the Christian era described by Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy, Duveyrier considered that in Antique times zebu drawn vehicles could have gone from the Libyan coast to the Aïr region via Garama, up until the time when dromedaries were introduced as pack animals in the IIIrd-IVth centuries A.D., replacing those carts. Using ox-drawn vehicles for trans-Saharan transport and trade implies that roads had to be constructed. This is the first time this hypothesis had been put forward. Duveyrier believed that the builders of these roadways were the ancestors of the black cultivators of Saharan oases, including the Garamantes. This idea is based on the ingenuity he attributes to these dark-skinned populations, whom he also considers to be at the origin of foggaras and other hydraulic constructions, as well as preroman buildings and monumental tombs also to be found in the area. His bias towards cartage, and its corresponding road network, and, correlatively, his refusal to consider the use of pack animals such as equidae and bovidae however much better suited to dry environments, may be explained by the geopolitical outlook of the Second Empire, with its desire to open up its Algerian colony to the Sudanese world, and surreptitiously influencing Duveyrier’s logic and line of thought.

Three families of documents make it possible to trace the protohistory and ancient history of this site: figures and inscriptions in tifinagh engraved on the rocks of the north-western part of the Adagh des Ifughas; inscriptions in Arabic incised on the granite cliffs dominating the Essouk valley and on the epitaph monoliths erected in five cemeteries of the city; and, the remains provided by three excavation units.
The deep levels of Essouk-Tadmakkat, of undetermined age due to the lack of datable material, could be linked in whole or in part to the twenty or so centuries separating the adoption of the chariot at this latitude around the middle of the 2nd millennium BC from the beginning of the local use of Libyan-Berber writing around the 4th-5th centuries AD. Carbon-14 dating places the appearance of permanent rectangular architecture at the time of Islamisation around 950-1100 AD. Then, important commercial exchanges took place in the agglomeration where, among other precious products, gold from the West African Sahel refined on site was traded. Some epitaphs on tombstones mention the names of foreigners, attesting to the cosmopolitan nature of the town, which is also evident in the wide range of meal remains that have been discovered, revealing a variety of tastes and culinary practices. The finds of date seeds, cotton seeds, a watermelon seed and a Linum seed also attest to irrigated cultivation in the shade of the palm trees. The city was abandoned in the 15th century for reasons that remain unclear.
A horizontal digging of 35 m2 on the archaeological deposit of Koussane allowed the excavation of iron-making remains in relation with a direct reduction operation of siliceous iron ore. Two fragments of charcoal included in a slag give an age C14 of 1715 ± 55 BP in agreement with the chronostratigraphy. The furnace used for this operation consisted of a slightly hemispherical shallow pit with a cell built with coils and coated with clay. Both the shape and the height of this superstructure are indeterminable from remains. A nozzle, arranged obliquely through the body of the oven and associated with bellows, favoured the formation of an iron sponge above the liquid slag as revealed by metallographic examinations. This latter solidified in the pit in a 90 kg block, and subequently the construction in elevation was moved two to three meters to allow the removal of the iron sponge. The chemical analyses made on the ore and on the slag lead to an estimate for the mass of raw metal produced of around 11,5 kg.
Two subjects are of relatively high stature. Aged between 20 and 35 years, they were positioned perpendicularly in decubitus. The position and age of the third individual, of a much smaller stature, are impossible to determine due to the very poor state of preservation of his skeleton and the lack of anatomical connection of the five identifiable long bones supposedly belonging to him. The hypothesis of a secondary burial associated with two primary burials is possible.
The bioapatite from the bones provided a radiocarbon age of 1515 ± 60 BP, which, after dendrochronological correction, gives a real age of between 425 and 643 AD (95% confidence).
J.-C. (95% de confiance).

The Tilemsi is a long and wide depression, starting from the Algerian-Malian borders, joining the Niger at Gao, and bordered by the Adrar des Iforas and Timetrine massifs. While the ancient prehistory of this valley remains largely unknown, its recent prehistory provides some key milestones that allow us to follow the development of the agro-pastoral economy in subtropical West Africa and its consequences on the organization of society.
Ancient rock art expressions make it possible to situate the beginning of livestock breeding in the region at some point between the sixth millennium and the end of the fourth millennium BC. Furthermore, the imprints of millet spikes observed on archaeological pottery reveal that this grass was gathered for food in the northern Malian Sahara in the fifth millennium BC. The cultivation of this cereal during the following millennium led to an increase in the size of the grains, and then to the acquisition of domestic characteristics in the Lower Tilemsi at the end of the third millennium BC. In parallel, the construction of enclosures with double stone facing and the building of tombs with imposing lithic superstructures attest to a level of social complexity that was already high at the turn of the fourth-third millennium BC.
The development of the agropastoral economy during the first half of the second millennium B.C. is consubstantial with the appearance of specialized crafts (metallurgy, hard stone cutting, manufacture of chariots), the acquisition of exotic animals (horses, zebus), the circulation of ideas and beliefs over great distances (complex symbolic motifs and themes characteristic of the Bronze Age), and the transmission of pearl millet cultivars with a West African genetic signature as far as India. Warrior aristocracies asserted themselves through ostentation during the first millennium before aridity forced, at the end, the populations of Tilemsi to abandon their lands for regions more favored by geography and climate. From the fourth-fifth centuries AD, the liberated spaces were taken over by nomadic herders who brought with them new traditions that are illustrated by rock art: riding horses and dromedaries, carrying several javelins and wearing ample and well-covered clothing, hunting with hounds, writing short messages using a script composed of signs very similar to the Tuareg tifinagh. These combined elements attest to the attachment of the region to the Amazigh-speaking domain, before the development of Arab-Berber trans-Saharan trade. The Tilemsi valley then became a caravan route of primary importance. From the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, the merchant city of Essouk-Tadmakkat in the southwest of the Adrar des Iforas flourished. The city was abandoned in the fifteenth century for reasons that remain to be clarified.
ABSTRACT. – Initially discreet, the human figures in the rock engravings of the Adrar des Iforas dating to the early Metal age gradually became numerous and impressive. The same evolution is also observed in regions to the east. The causes underlying this phenomenon can be partially explained, on the one hand, through the archæological and archæobotanical data recorded in regions from the valley of Senegal up to the the lake Chad basin and, on the other hand, through the biogeochemical signals emitted by human bones dug up in various graves in the southern Sahara. It is clear from this documentation that the millet (Pennisetum glaucum) agriculture was a key element. Its development at the beginning of the IInd millennium BC, when aridity was constantly increasing, engendered excess productions. The distribution of the grain surpluses freed some people from the constraint of having to produce their own food. This situation allowed the birth of specialized crafts - jewelers of fine stones, metallurgists, cartwrights - and, hence the production of prestigious goods. The commercial and ideological trades over long distances developed. Millet was exported to India. In the Adrar des Iforas, engravers drew angled objects with big metallic blades by minimizing the silhouettes of their carriers, or even totally ignoring them, which seems to suggest a liturgical function rather than an utilitarian role for these objects. This religious dimension of the art disappeared since aristocrats asserted their political supremacy through ostentation. Their painted and engraved images multiplied on rocks, namely those of persons depicted from the front, often armed with spears equipped with wide metallic points, richly adorned and dressed, sometimes driving chariots pulled by two horses.
Archaeology allows us to better understand the consequences of pearl millet agriculture on the evolution of West African society from the end of the IIIrd millennium BC. At this time, this grass acquired its domestic morphology at the borders of Mali, Niger and Algeria. This cereal cultivation – the oldest so far documented in subsaharan Africa – allowed:
- excess productions of grains,
- the development of specialized crafts,
- an accentuation of social hierarchies,
- the transmission of pearl millet cultivars to India,
- and, from the Ist millennium BC, the appearance of warrior aristocracies.
What place occupies Egypt in the history of the animal drive? In what foreign knowledge does she inherit? In what domains does she innovate? The comparison of the nilotiques representations with those of the Near East, the Middle East and the pontiques regions, allows us to draw up an assessment.
The diversity of the current culinary traditions in the Sahara and the Sahel, centered on cereals and giving to dairies a very variable part, indicates the complexity of their history. This article proposes a synthesis and reflections on this subject from the known archaeological remains. It remains difficult to recognize the use of wild cereals as food resources from 20 000 BC (time of appearance of the stone grinding equipment in the Libyan desert). New investigations, some of which successful recently, may be able to give determining elements to elucidate this question. The first attempts of pearl millet domestication appear during the IIIrd millennium B.C. in the West African Sahel region. Domestication of other cereals which are still cultivated today seems to begin at least two thousand years later, judging by the discoveries of botanical rests. The development of cereal culture implies the management of
sowing, grain storing, guarding and protection of fields and defense of the harvests. It further implies economic specialisation, development of craftsmanship, envy, development of trading, and hence, the accentuation of different social categories and political rivalries.
Since the beginning of breeding in Africa, that is to say from the VIth millennium B.C. to present, Saharan herdsmen have exploited the dairy production of their animals. Several documented sources demonstrate this: figurative milk-producing female animals and milking scenes in Saharan rock art, slaughtering of young calves and kids in the Libyan desert, fat from cow’s milk preserved inside potsherds found in the Tadrart Akoukas.
Abstract: Typo-technological study of an ancient stone ring whose archaeological context is unknown. Hypotheses are put forward on its use with regard to its dimensions, its mass, its manufacture, its stigmata and its engraved decoration. For this same purpose, is solicited the knowledge of rings of similar aspect from North African, Saharan and Nilotic prehistory and proto-history and from African ethnography.
Demonstration of the unfounded nature of two reproaches made against me. For more information on the ins and outs of this case, please refer to https://www.academia.edu/40570804
Nota bene. I discovered Y. Gauthier’s answer to my right of reply after the publication of issue 21 of the AARS Cahiers in August 2020. Everyone will appreciate the content of this answer by referring to my publications. The editorial team of the Cahiers decreed that Y. Gauthier’s response was "the final point of an exchange". Whatever untruth cannot remain unanswered, it is important for me to add these five clarifications to the comments made:
1- The fact that Y. and C. Gauthier omitted to quote my 2006 article, is in no way a "banal lack of reference". This omission allowed them to appropriate some of my ideas in their 2011 publication, as outlined on pages 38-39 of my 2016-2017 text available at https://www.academia.edu/36724222.
2- I don’t attribute anywhere to Y. and C. Gauthier the thesis of a Saharan charriotry owned exclusively by Libyan-Berber groups. I note only that this thesis is very widespread in the literature.
3- Neither in my publications, nor in my pre-publication available on academia are mentioned (https://www.academia.edu/40570804) the word "plagiarism" and the sentence in quotation marks that Y. Gauthier credits me in his note 1 (p. 304). Feeling defamed on the basis of an officially non-existent word and phrase is a first in the field that deserves to be highlighted.
4- Y. Gauthier talks about the reading committee of the Cahiers de l’AARS. However, this journal has no reading committee. It is the members of the board of the Association of the Friends of Saharan Rock Art (AARS) who decide what to do with the texts they receive (I thank very much the team of the portal Academia to have accepted, in October 2019, to diffuse my text and the photographic corpus of the chariots and parts of chariots currently known of the Adrar of Iforas, which text and corpus had been rejected a few weeks earlier by the aforementioned board).
5- Contrary to what Y. Gauthier indicates, I have never called the double-punctuated oval engravings of northern Africa "idols". This word borrowed from European archaeology is noted in quotation marks in my writings on the rare occasions when I evoke the protohistoric anthropomorphic figures of southwestern Europe.
