From the assassination of young Gordian III to the final advent of Diocletian, a long and turbulent sequence of fallen rulers, murdered suitors, failed dynasties, and even seceding parallel empires flooded the territories of the Roman Empire, provinces that only a few years earlier still enjoyed the benefits of a long period of almost absolute peace and quiet. The barbarian invasions cracked the borders and Rome staggered, seeing its foundations shaken by external wars of great proportions, joined by recurring plagues and famines. Vast regions were left deserted and life in the classical Greco-Roman style disappeared in many cities forever. The figure of the emperor was threatened to a great extent by the dangers mentioned, but also by certain internal phenomena that we can personify in the figure of the usurpers. We will try to show a clear and broad perspective of an often dark, complex, deep and difficult to understand process such as that of usurpation, without a doubt essential to understand the key years of the third century that have become known as the “ Military Anarchy ”or the“ Crisis of the III century ”.

Abstract: In this work we will offer some guidelines and ideas referring to three related events, such as the battles carried out in Mursa, current Osijek, in Croatia, in the years c. 260 and 351 AD, the development of the new heavy cavalry in the framework of the Late Roman Army, and the phenomenon of usurpations, of essential importance in the third and fourth centuries. Putting these three themes in context, we will try to find a clearer portrait for seeking historical solutions to better study the period.

ABSTRACT: Despite the large number of military uprisings that occurred in the Roman Empire, and especially in the Third Century, we know very little about how these conspiracies were prepared and executed on paper. Not counting the atypical case of Procopius, related in detail by Ammianus Marcellinus, the literary sources, already problematic and /or scarce in many cases, leave many gaps in the accounts of such processes, which recent historiography tries to fill with hypotheses. Without assessing the motivations of the phenomenon or the degree of responsibility of the different parties involved in the so-called usurpations, we offer an explanatory proposal from the merely technical point of view, that is, how a certain group of conspirators manages to devise, scheme and execute a plan or series of plans with the aim of attaining power through the support of certain military forces and overthrow, almost always assassinating, the reigning emperor.
ABSTRACT: This article offers a fresh perspective about the role and
evolution of one of the sections of the Roman army, the Frumentarii.
Linked with the rank of principales, and with the supply and provisions,
especially grain, as their name seems to indicate, this squad took at an
early date a great deal of additional functions. Missions to drive and protect luxury stuff to Rome, «espionage», surveillance, police duties, murder, collecting taxes and provincial defense supervision, were some of the unalike but key functions carried by them until the end of Third Century. Although it seems as their infamous reputation fostered their disbandment, for long years they were the emperors’ ears and eyes. We will try to explain their development and importance in the Roman society, highlighting the survival of their military skills.

This work is inspired by the new investigations on the end of Roman Britain with the aim to reflect on a number of military tactics such as surveillance strategies, intelligence, and exploration, elements of vital importance to know the plans of any enemy. The Roman Empire carried out for a long time adequate strategies and counted on valuable resources for such tasks, as scouts, spies and a special fleet. But their
abandonment led to a worsening in the security conditions that ultimately led to the loss of control over the island.
ABSTRACT
In this article it´s intended to capture a clear and complete image of Constantius Chlorus as military commander, in spite of the scarce evidence that offer us the late sources and specially the contemporary authors of the emperor. Offers as well a research of the profile and framework of the military unit called Solenses Galicani, considering some guidelines and suggestions from the scarce literary testimonies to give some additional light to the little known tactical and strategic aspects of the Tetrarchy armies. It sets a hypothesis about the ethnic composition, structure and function of that legion on the battlefield, using the information of the Notitia Dignitatum.
Abstract This work tries to analyze a fragment of the Historia Augusta biography dedicated to Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus. Given the controversy linked to this problematic work and the well-known enigmas regarding its date and authorship, the hypothesis for this paper directly relates the chosen fragment (Vita Probi 23, 4-5) with the controversy between Paganism-Christianity and all the social and religious convulsions that arose in the Late Roman Empire during the end of the 4 th century and the beginning of the 5 th century.
This work deals with a historical episode that has gone almost unnoticed in recent publications, perhaps submerged by the many other traumatic processes that shaped the end of Roman Gaul. But in our opinion it is an event of essential importance, both for the fi gure of the emperor Anthemius and the studies on Sub Roman Britain. Around AD 469 an expeditionary force formed by Britons landed in the continent (possibly in Armorica) in alliance with Rome, after being called by the emperor, to confront the Visigoths led by king Euric. Although the plan failed and Euric could defeat the Britons single hand before Anthemius or other Roman generals managed to join forces with them, the episode is highly signifi cant. Riothamus, the leader of the expedition, has been linked both to the Arthurian legend and to the character of Ambrosius Aurelianus, the fi rst hero of the Briton resistance against the Saxons. This late alliance, in a desperate situation and close to the collapse of the Empire in the West, opens new and suggestive research lines. Up to four diff erent literary sources relate the event.
