Nowadays, one of the most rapidly growing sectors of industry is that of the infrastructure and vehicles of transportation systems. This discipline needs new, innovative and economically proven initiatives. The domain of transport is an interdisciplinary one which brings together many different scientific and engineering strands. The synergy between mechanics and transportation science offers the possibility of finding new and effective solutions to design, manufacturing and servicing problems. Due to globalization of the market-place, international cooperation in applied research is very fruitful and expedient. This collection of 13 refereed papers is the result of a unique opportunity offered to the scientific and technical communities for them to interact and to consolidate the application of current achievements in mechanical science as applied to transport. It covers topics which include theoretical, numerical and experimental studies of transport-related areas.All-in-all, it represents a succinct state-of-the-art survey.

Problems involving thermoelasticity have received considerable attention in recent years in both the engineering and the mathematical literature. This popularity is due to the fact that thermoelastic expansion occurs naturally in many industrial processes. Contact temperatures and the temperature field in the wheel-rail system influence phenomena which occur in the contact area (see [1, 2]). We shall consider the contact of a rigid wheel with an elastic rail resting on a rigid foundation. It is assumed that the friction between the bodies is described by the Coulomb law ([3]). Moreover we assume a frictional heat generation and heat transfer across the contact surface.

In this paper a method of calculation is presented for the determination of the evolution by wear of railway wheels. The results are compared with the development of the profile of the wheels in the Amsterdam Metro, and a satisfactory agreement is achieved. In ordinary railway lines the agreement is essentially worse, since we did not take into account the wear due to flanging.

Summary New trends a tram design is to introduce low floor. This creates new problems related to dynamics of driving, stability of driving, wear of wheel. Low floor trams require bogies with independent wheel. Such bogie kinematics scheme shows a tendency to bigger effect of wear of wheel flange. The aim of presented low floor tram investigations was to describe dynamic properties of structure and their influence on flange wear. The experimental investigations consist of strain measurements in articulation and some kinematic pairs in tram body, displacements using contactless measuring sensors, angle of rotation and some mutual characteristics, which describe vehicle dynamics.

Condition monitoring and fault detection systems are becoming increasingly important in rail vehicles maintenance and operation, ensuring safety and reliability improvement. Light rail systems are not the main target for this trend, because of low operational speed and lower safety factors. Nevertheless public transport operators begin to pay a closer attention to the technical state monitoring of vehicle and track, in order to reduce maintenance cost and increase safety and ride comfort for passengers, which is an important challenge for public transport competitiveness in XXI century. The paper describes the main concept of the innovative on-board condition monitoring system for light rail vehicle and track. Functional requirements, assumptions and procedures are described, as well as the on-board data acquisition unit with necessary transducers, which number, function and technical parameters were optimized during the research phase of the project. The prototype of the presented system is now being tested in normal operating conditions.

The following paper describes a general conception and realization of a computer package to predict some aspects of dynamic behaviour of railway vehicles. The package consists of three parts, an interactive pre-processor, the analysis program and an interactive post-processor. MATLAB was used as environment for the realization of the package. In recent versions only passenger vehicles, which have a MD 52 (Minden-Deutz) type trucks, can be analysed but the pre- and post-processor have a general form.

The known methods of synthesizing the dynamics of a discrete linear model are reviewed, and a new method of synthesis is proposed which is based on a modification of the transfer function matrix. The basis of the synthesis is a set of eigenvalue and eigenvectors, the transfer function matrix and dynamic transmission functions calculated for a vector equation of state obtained as a result of transformation of a system of linear differential equations of second order with constant coefficients corresponding to a mathematical model of the investigated object. In the proposed method the problem of synthesis is realized through a modification of the dynamic transmission functions based on elements of the transfer function matrix of the investigated equation of state. The final result is the obtaining of a design parameter vector which realizes the required dynamic properties of the system.

The improvement of traveller comfort and safety, in parallel to an increase of passenger train speed, is a reason to implement monitoring systems. These systems are more often used to monitor components of railway infrastructure and vehicles. Studies in this area must be preceded by identification and a complex analysis of the railway vehicle - track system. This allows us to recognise the dynamic properties of the system and then select the appropriate place to install sensors on board the vehicle. This paper presents the results of model studies and a prototype monitoring system which is installed on a passenger electric traction unit. This system is aimed, inter alia, at monitoring the state of train suspension and the detection of some particular track geometric irregularities.

The urban transport system based on trams as the basic means of transport is one of the oldest systems of human transport in urban agglomerations. A tram is a more efficient, cheaper-to-operate, and greener means of transport compared to a bus. Striving to enable the use of this means of transport by elderly and disabled people, constructors and manufacturers of tram vehicles began to consider the requirements of the ordering parties—organizers of municipal public transport—in their solutions. The basic condition for disabled and elderly people to use tram transport is the possibility of safe and efficient entry and exit from the vehicle at tram stops. The fulfillment of this condition is possible only in the case of tram vehicles with a low 100% floor, and this, in turn, requires the replacement of trolleys with traditional wheelsets, that is, trolleys with independently rotating wheels, in the construction of the running gear. A wheelset with independently rotating wheels (IRW) do...
