Three brands of RDTs: Paracheck P.F. TM (detecting single species), OptiMAL IT TM and SD MRDT (detecting pan or multi-species), were field assessed and compared to Giemsa-Stained Thick Blood Film (GS-TBF). The assessment was conducted during April to July 2013 in the malaria clinics of three provinces, consisting a northern province; Tak, a western province; Kanchanaburi, and an eastern province; Chanthaburi. Totally 899 suspected malaria cases visited to these malaria clinics. Of these cases; 84, 157, and 658 found Plasmodium falciparum -positive, Plasmodium vivax -positive and malaria-negative, respectively. All cases were diagnosed by four tests; GS-TBF and the three RDT tests, consisting of Paracheck P.F. TM , OptiMAL IT TM and SD MRDT. These RDTs revealed the sensitivity for P. falciparum , 98.81%, 91.67%, and 94.05% respectively. Where as the sensitivity for P. vivax of OptiMAL IT TM and SD MRDT were 94.27% and 95.54% respectively. The specificity of the three RDTs were higher than 99.00% which was proved that these RDTs were well discriminated for positive cases. This study revealed the superiority of Paracheck P.F. TM in detecting P. falciparum to two other RDTs. Regarding P. vivax , both OptiMAL IT TM and SD MRDT revealed their accuracy in bottom line of acceptance. In conclusion, this study gave evident to malaria policy maker to determine which kind of tests could be used in remote malaria endemic areas.

Genotypic characterization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is useful for epidemiological investigation and tracking of TB transmission. This study aimed to genetically identify and observe transmission of MTB by analyzing DNA fingerprints of tubercle bacilli isolated from pulmonary TB patients who were registered at an outbreak area of Thamaka district, Kanjanaburi province in 2013-2014. Sixty-eight DNA samples including twenty multidrug-resistant (MDR), and five mono-resistant MTB either to isoniazid or rifampicin were genotyped based on spoligotyping and subtyped using Mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit-variable number of tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR). The results revealed that 34 of 68 (50.00%) isolates belonged to Beijing genotype (SIT No. 1). Other twelve and seven new spoligotypes were identified. The major cumulative subtype of Beijing cluster was MDR-TB, and 14 of these had identical MIRU-VNTR genotype. ...

The methodology was a qualitative method combining with both of story telling based on experiences and focus group discussion techniques. Data were collected through interview using semi-structure questionnaire. It was found that persons involving in media master production should be public health officers, staff of non-government organizations, entrepreneurs, employers of migrant workers, physicians and scholars, as well as graphic designers in the final process of media production. However, migrant health volunteers should participate in content design process to identify “common words” which would be generally perceived ...

The Project is divided into 3 phases, which has been implemented from 1995 to 2009. This study was designed to closely observe vector-borne diseases, that is, malaria, filariasis and dengue. The study found that malaria prevailed in all districts. Three districts of Nakhonsithammarat were malaria transmission areas (A case), namely, Cha-oud, Chulaporn and Lansaka. There were 187 malarial cases and 59 cases in the two periods of fiscal years 1995-1999 and 2000-2004 respectively. Malaria vectors found in Lanasaka and Ronphibun districts were An. dirus, An. maculatus, and An. minimus and posed a threat of malaria outbreak. Filariasis, caused by periodic and sub-periodic type Brugia malayi, could be found in all districts. There were 61 and 15 filariasis cases in the periods 1997-1999 ...

A study of schoolchildren in Thailand found only 13% of those infected missed more than one day of school because of illness*. CQ resistant P. vivax (CRPv) has not yet challenged the efficacy of the drug. The present study was conducted to assess the current response of P. vivax to CQ alone in Thailand. A 28-day in vivo therapeutic efficacy study was conducted from June 2009 to December 2010 in 4 sentinel sites. Recurrence of parasitaemia and the clinical condition of patients were assessed on each visit during follow -up. The drug levels in recurrent patients' blood were measured using HPLC. Data were analyzed using the WHO 2008 program for the analysis of in vivo tests. Of the total 212 patients included in the study, 201 completed the 28-days follow- up, while 11 were excluded. In five patients (2.5%), parasitaemia reappeared within the 28-days follow - up. On the day of recurrent parasitaemia, the level of chloroquine/desethylchloroquine (CQ - DCQ) was above the ...

Combination treatments with doxycycline for 3-8 weeks are more effective than standard treatment. However, long-term use of antibiotics may contribute to drug resistance and are not practical for use in remote areas. We assessed whether a single dose of doxycycline combined with the standard DEC regimen would reduce the incidence and severity of adverse reactions and increase the efficacy of standard treatment. Forty-four subjects from Tak Province were recruited into the randomized double-blind clinical trial study: 25 received DEC (300 mg) combined with a placebo, and 19 received DEC (300 mg) combined with doxycycline (200 mg). The incidences of adverse reactions to standard treatment were lower in the doxycycline group (45.5%) than in the placebo group...

Key message should be clearly stated in the following three main issues: (1) common symptoms, (2) treatment process, and (3) raising awareness of the communities on TB problems.
