The goal of the investigation was to study the succession of major groups of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their antagonism in salt-fermented cucumber using PCR. In a direct detection method as well as a short enrichment process, PCR enabled detection of Leuconostoc and Lactobacillus during early hours of fermentation. Subsequently, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus emerged as the dominant genera. Nucleic acid sequence of culture-independent clones confirmed the detection of Pediococcus as a dominant genera emerging during late stages of fermentation. PCR also revealed time-dependent emergence of mesentericin, pediocin and plantaricin A producers and accounted for the LAB succession in the fermenting samples. A total of 328 LAB isolates were obtained collectively from 30 cucumber samples, of which PCR could identify an overwhelming 186 Lactobacillus isolates followed by 113 Pediococcus and 29 Leuconostoc isolates, respectively. Based on antimicrobial assay against target strain Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B640, 28% of the LAB were bacteriocin producers, of which pediocin producers were substantial, followed by plantaricin A and mesentericin producers. The bacteriocins elaborated by the isolates were active against a large number of Gram-positive target LAB strains and pathogenic bacteria including Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

This is a prospective and comparative study of 150 patients each operated on for vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy for indications other than utero-vaginal prolapse between January 2004 and December 2005. Age, parity, and anesthesia were matched in both groups. A preoperative examination under anesthesia and sonographic estimation of uterine volume were done to decide the feasibility of vaginal hysterectomy. Various debulking techniques such as hemisection, enucleation, and wedge resection were used for the vaginal route. Leiomyomas were the most common indication in both groups. The mean time taken was less in the vaginal group (39.07 versus 45.56 minutes). The average blood loss (35.36 versus 108.5 g) and the mean hospital stay (3.71 versus 7.84 days) were also significantly less in the vaginal group than in the abdominal group. The overall postoperative morbidity and period of convalescence were also reduced in the vaginal group.

The asialoglycoprotein receptor, which is abundantly and near exclusively expressed on hepatocytes, has received much attention in the design of non-viral hepatotropic DNA delivery systems. Thus, asialoglycoproteins and hexopyranosyl ligands have been coupled to DNA-binding cationic polymers and liposomes in the assembly of complexes intended for uptake by liver parenchymal cells. The aim of the study was to construct a hepatocyte-targeted multimodular liposome-based transfecting complex, in which the biotin-streptavidin interaction provides the cohesive force between the ligand asialorosomucoid and the liposome bilayer, and to evaluate its transfection capabilities in the hepatocyte-derived human transformed cell line HepG2. Dibiotinylated asialoorosomucoid was attached to cationic liposomes constructed from 3beta[N-(N',N'-dimethylaminopropane)-carbamoyl] cholesterol (Chol-T):dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine:biotinylcholesterylformylhydrazide (MSB1) (48:50:2 mole ratio) through streptavidin interposition. Liposome-pGL3 DNA interactions were studied by gel band shift and ethidium displacement assays. The cytotoxicity of assemblies was evaluated in the HepG2 cell line and transfection capabilities determined by measuring the activity of the transgene luciferase. Binding assays showed that all DNA was liposome associated at a DNA (negative):liposome (positive) charge ratio of 1:1. Accommodation of a streptavidin dibiotinylated asialoorosomucoid assembly was achieved at a DNA:liposome:streptavidin dibiotinylated asialoorosomucoid ratio of 1:4:9 (weight basis). Complexes showed optimal transfection activity at this ratio, which was reduced 10-fold by the presence of the competing ligand asialofetuin. The streptavidin-biotin interaction has been applied for the first time to the assembly of hepatocyte-targeted lipoplexes that display asialoorosomucoid and that are well tolerated by a human hepatoma cell line in which transfection is demonstrably achieved by receptor mediation. Favorable size and charge ratio characteristics suggest that this system may be suitable for in vivo application.

Two-level bony spurs are rare and also a very long segment of bony spur is very rare. Bony spur with a single dural covering is not reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of prophylactic surgery performed on a patient with a bony spur with a single dural covering who showed a good postoperative outcome. This case highlights the importance of prophylactic surgery in such patients to avoid cord injuries. Since birth a 1-year-old child had had a tuft of hair at the dorsal (D6 and D7) region. The patient was examined and found to have scoliosis with convexity towards the right. There was no neurological deficit. MRI and CT spine scans showed 2-level type 1 split cord malformation (SCM) and there was a low-lying conus at the L(3-4) level. The patient was operated on at the age of 1 year and 2 separate bony septae were observed. The upper one extended from D5 to D9 and the lower one was at the D11 level. The bony spurs were excised. The filum was sectioned at the L(4-5) level by a separate incision. The patient had a good postoperative recovery. With meticulous planning and careful surgery, prophylactic surgery can have a very good outcome in long-segment and two-level type 1 SCM.

ABSTRACT The present paper entails the role of different pyrite forms during desulfurization of Nagaland coals of north-east India. This coal contains a considerable quantity of pyrite which occurs in various forms like framboidal, disseminated, cavity and fissure fillings, massive replacement and discrete grains. The discrete pyrite grains show strong affinity with liptinite and inertinite macerals while rest of the forms show low to moderate correlation with different macerals. The correlation between different pyrite forms and desulfurization reveals that the coal samples rich in disseminated pyrite have undergone minimum desulfurization followed by framboidal pyrite rich coal samples. These pyrite forms probably caused difficulty in desulfurization due to their small size, complicated structure and their highly scattered occurrences. The maximum removal was observed in samples rich in cavity and fissure filling pyrite.

The ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter B/A is determined using the finite amplitude distortion method. The generation of second harmonic as a result of propagation of ultrasonic wave through the media, were measured by the receiving transducer (4.0 MHz) placed coaxial with the same sized cylindrical transmitting transducer (2.0 MHz). The second harmonic component of the wave, were analysed and recorded. The values of B/A of liver, kidney, spleen and heart tissues turns out to be 7.48, 6.75, 9.89 and 6.45 respectively.

Start-up periods of anaerobic reactors need 2 to 3 month to an year (or even more), presumably because of use of non-acclimated anaerobic seed and its slow growth rate. Aerobes commonly excrete glue-like substance such as slime, which aid in attachment of aerobic biofilm to the filter media. The anaerobes do not produce slime and are continuously washed out of reactor. However they attach themselves to slime matrix produced by others (aerobes). The present studies emphasized on initial creation of slime layer on the surfaces of fixed bed media followed by introduction of acclimated anaerobic biomass in bulk, which was expected to get attached to the slime layer, produce biofilm and in turn reduce start-up time. The results are very encouraging and 'Start-up Technique' finalized during these studies is found to be very effective in reducing the start-up period of laboratory scale UAFFB reactor to as low as 15 days even at high organic loading of 5.95 kg COD/day/cum of reactor. The 'Steady-state Technique' is found to be useful in creating the steady-state condition in minimum period of 15 days on increasing the organic loading rate to 7.66 kg COD/day/cum of reactor.

ABSTRACT Three new chiral phthalimides have been synthesized and characterized. Phthalimides (1-3) possess an acentric structure as revealed by structural investigation. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in an orthorhombic system with the space group P212121, however the monoclinic system with the chiral space group P21 is observed for 3. The presence of C-HO hydrogen bonds in 1-3 facilitates the construction of several supramolecular structures. Helical structural motifs are also observed. The maximum value of hyperpolarizability (β), 159.9446 × 10−30 esu calculated for compound 3 is several times greater than that of urea. On the other hand 1 and 2 have hyperpolarizabilities of 10.8063 × 10−30 and 121.9519 × 10−30 esu, respectively. The polycrystalline samples of 1-3 were assessed for a second-harmonic generation response, which was found to be 8.8, 10.2 and 9.7 mV respectively. Further, compounds 1-3 showed d33 values of 0.93, 1.97 and 1.88 pC N−1 respectively. The present investigation demonstrates chiral phthalimides as effective contenders for nonlinear optical and piezoelectric properties.
