In presence of aortic stenosis, a jet is produced downstream of the aortic valve annulus during systole. The vena contracta corresponds to the location where the cross-sectional area of the flow jet is minimal. The maximal transvalvular pressure gradient (TPG(max)) is the difference between the static pressure in the left ventricle and that in the vena contracta. TPG(max) is highly time-dependent over systole and is known to depend upon the transvalvular flow rate, the effective orifice area (EOA) of the aortic valve and the cross-sectional area of the left ventricular outflow tract. However, it is still unclear how these parameters modify the TPG(max) waveform. We thus derived an explicit analytical model to describe the instantaneous TPG(max) across the aortic valve during systole. This theoretical model was validated with in vivo experiments obtained in 19 pigs with supravalvular aortic stenosis. Instantaneous TPG(max) was measured by catheter and its waveform was compared with the one determined from the derived equation. Our results showed a very good concordance between the measured and predicted instantaneous TPG(max). Total relative error and mean absolute error were on average 9.4+/-4.9% and 2.1+/-1.1 mmHg, respectively. The analytical model proposed and validated in this study provides new insight into the behaviour of the TPG(max) and thus of the aortic pressure at the level of vena contracta. Because the static pressure at the coronary inlet is similar to that at the vena contracta, the proposed equation will permit to further examine the impact of aortic stenosis on coronary blood flow.

We consider the exactly soluble Edwards-Wilkinson Model in one dimension and demonstrate explicitly, that it is possible to construct a field, that does not depend explicitly on time, such that the corresponding time dependent correlation function,, is dominated at long times by a stretched exponential decay. The difference between this and the stretched exponential decay present in truly non linear systems is discussed.

Fly Ash (FA) from South African power stations was successfully used to treat Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) and the insoluble residual solids that were obtained as a result of the reaction between FA and AMD proved suitable as a backfill material for mine stabilization. Particle Size Distribution (PSD) of FA varies from time to time depending on the coal burning conditions in the power station. Such variability in PSD of FA could influence its capability to neutralize AMD as well as the flow behaviour of residual solids that have to be transported hydraulically to the backfill site. The objective of this paper is to study the influence of variability of PSD on the above mentioned properties. The FA from Arnot power station in South Africa was used for this study. This report presents alternative emission limit values for inorganic components to be used in the revision of the Building Materials Decree (1999) in the Netherlands. Three key factors determine the emission limit value: (1) the environmental compartment under consideration, with its dimensions and the accounted for, (2) the desired level of environmental protection and (3) the scenario applying to the intended use of the construction material. Emission limit values have been derived here from modelled concentrations in soil, groundwater and surface water. The desired level of protection has been elaborated as a stand-still approach (based on quality target values and a risk-based approach (based on PNECs). Two exposure models were used for taking the effects of a time-dependent exposure of the soil to leached components into account, for vertical transport through the soil profile and for retardation of components in the soil profile. The PEARL model was used for binding described by equilibrium adsorption. The ORCHESTRA model was used for binding that also takes speciation into account. For surface water, a dilution factor was computed assuming a certain mixing zone, dependent on the size of the surface water. The consequences of the proposed alternative emission limit values have been estimated on the basis of information in a database containing results of leaching tests for construction materials. The alternatives proposed form the basis for a political decision-making process, where environmental protection will be balanced with other socio-economic concerns.

Peptide mass-fingerprint is widely used for protein identification while studying proteome with the use of 1D or 2D electrophoresis. Peptide mass tolerance indicates the fit of theoretical peptide mass with the experimental measurements, and choice of this parameter sufficiently influences the protein identification. The role of peptide mass tolerance was estimated by counting the number of identified proteins for the reference set of mass-spectra. The reference set of 400 Ultraflex (Bruker Daltonics, Germany) mass-spectra was obtained for the slices of 1D gel of liver microsomes. Using Mascot server for protein identification, the peptide mass tolerance value was varied in the range from 0.02 to 0.40 Da with a step 0.01 Da. Depending on the tolerance the number of identified protein changes up to 10 times. Effect of the aqueous chemistry on the mechanical strength of chalk has extensively been studied during the last decade. At high temperatures (~130°C), chalk exposed to seawater is significantly weaker compared to chalk exposed to distilled water when considering the hydrostatic yield strength and the following creep phase. The explanation of these experimental results must be of a chemical nature, as the density and viscosity of the aqueous phase vary little among these different brines. We present the results from simplified aqueous chemistry using MgCl2 brines, and compare these results with seawater. Previous studies show that different ions, e.g. Ca2+, Mg2+, \({{\rm SO}{_{4}}^{2-}}\) in the injected brine, as well as the chalk mineralogy have an impact on the stability of the rock. We performed mechanical tests on chalk cores from Liège and Stevns Klint; it was found that these two outcrop chalks exhibit an unexpected difference in their mechanical responses when comparing cores flooded with NaCl and MgCl2 at 130°C. The results of this study show that the effects of magnesium seem to be governed not only by the differences in mineralogy, but also a time dependency on chalk deformation is additionally observed. Independent of the chalk type tested, the chemical analyses performed show that when MgCl2 is flooded through the core, a significant loss of magnesium and a considerable additional amount of calcium are detected in the effluent. The experimental observations fit very well with the time-dependent chemical changes gained from the mathematical model of this study that accounts for transport effects (convection and molecular diffusion) as well as chemical processes such as precipitation/dissolution. Based on the calculations and chemical analyses, we argue that the loss of magnesium and the production of calcium cannot solely be a consequence of a substitution process. The calculations rather indicate that magnesium is precipitated forming new mineral phases and in this process not only calcite, but also silicates are dissolved. The amount of dissolved calcium and silicon from the rock matrix is significant and could thus cause an additional deformation to take place. Both the retention of magnesium in the chalk core and the formation of newly precipitated magnesium-bearing carbonates and/or magnesium-bearing clay-like minerals after flooding with MgCl2 brine were demonstrated using scanning electron microscopic methods. In addition, precipitation of anhydrite as a result of flooding with seawater-like brine was proven. The water-induced strain not only depends on the ion composition of the injected brine; moreover, the presence of non-carbonate minerals will most likely also have a significant influence on the mechanical behaviour of chalk.
