ABSTRACT We assessed the learning approaches and learning styles of a sample of 148 excellent students selected from 11 degrees from nine centers of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), and we compared the results with those of a sample of 133 average students from the same centers. We found that excellent students took deeper approach than average students and that they preferred reflective and theoretical learning styles. Average students adopted a more surface approach, and they preferred active and pragmatic learning styles. Greater academic achievement was related to the deep approach and to the reflective and theoretical learning styles. Poorer academic achievement was related to the surface approach and an active style. University professors may reinforce the deep approach by placing high aims for students which go well beyond reproducing knowledge but use other complementary methods other than expository teaching: problem solving, case studies, designing projects, raising questions, discussion and negotiation in the classroom, etc. To accomplish this, teachers must encourage students to be committed, and these methods help do that. It also helps to introduce more demanding evaluation procedures which do not merely involve repeating what has been learnt, but include training guidance that offers students feedback.

Previous studies have indicated that 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) inhibits Na+ transport in the medullary thick ascending loop of Henle (mTALH), but the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. The present study compared the effects of 20-HETE with those of ouabain and furosemide on intracellular Na+ concentration ([Na+]i), Na+-K+-ATPase activity, and 86Rb+ uptake, an index of Na+ transport, in mTALH isolated from rats. Ouabain (2 mM) increased, whereas furosemide (100 μM) decreased, [Na+]i in the mTALH of rats. Ouabain and furosemide inhibited 86Rb+ uptake by 91 and 30%, respectively. 20-HETE (1 μM) had a similar effect as ouabain and increased [Na+]i from 19 ± 1 to 30 ± 1 mM. 20-HETE reduced Na+-K+-ATPase activity by 30% and 86Rb+ uptake by 37%, but it had no effect on 86Rb+ uptake or [Na+]i in the mTALH of rats pretreated with ouabain. 20-HETE inhibited 86Rb+ uptake by 12% and increased [Na+]i by 19 mM in mTALH pretreated with furosemide. The cytochrome P-450 metabolite 20-HETE induces calcium-, endothelial-, and nitric oxide (NO)-dependent relaxation of bovine pulmonary arteries (PA). VEGF is an NO-dependent dilator of systemic arteries and plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the pulmonary vasculature. We tested the effect of VEGF on PA diameter and tone and the contribution of cytochrome P-450 family 4 (CYP4) to vasoactive effects of VEGF. Bovine PA rings (1 mm in diameter) relaxed with VEGF (0.1–10 nM) in an endothelial- and eNOS-dependent manner. This response was blunted by pretreatment with the CYP4 inhibitor dibromododecynyl methyl sulfonamide (DDMS) as well as a mechanistically different CYP4 inhibitor N-hydroxy- N′-(4-butyl-2-methylphenyl)formamidine. PAs also increased in diameter by 6–12% in the presence of VEGF (10 nM), and this increase was attenuated by DDMS. Epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) are cytochrome P-450 (CYP) metabolites synthesized from the essential fatty acid arachidonic acid to generate four regioisomers, 14,15-, 11,12-, 8,9-, and 5,6-EET. Cultured human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs) contain endogenous EETs that are increased by stimulation with physiological agonists such as bradykinin. Because EETs are known to modulate a number of vascular functions, including angiogenesis, we tested each of the four regioisomers to characterize their effects on survival and apoptosis of HCAECs and cultured human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs). A single application of physiologically relevant concentration of 14,15-, 11,12-, and 8,9-EET but not 5,6-EET (0.75–300 nM) promoted concentration-dependent increase in cell survival of HLMVECs and HCAECs after removal of serum.
