The purpose of the study is to record the oldest printing technique hand-block printing and preserve its evergreen product Ajrak which is the traditional textile of Sindh. To find out the reasons of abandoning this traditional craft and to witness the difference in block printing done before and now. Different towns of Sindh were visited and eleven artisans (Ajrak-maker/block-printer and block-maker) were interviewed and a questionnaire was filled. The results illustrate that they are suffering from many problems but one of the major problem is lack of clean water which is badly affecting their business. It was also observed that traditional Ajrak formats and patterns are disappearing as only one or two patterns are mostly used nowadays. Whereas the machine block printing has somehow also affected the traditional craft. Despite all the problems they are still so passionate about this craft that they are training their children as well but there are certain evidences that Ajrak-makin...

This research identifies the design quality determinants and parameters for affordable housing in a developing metropolis, Karachi, Pakistan. The absence of quality housing in Karachi has resulted in a variety of factors including policy failure, violation of bylaws, housing scarcity and more low quality housing. The combination of these factors has resulted in poor housing design and construction and has lowered the overall quality of housing. Homeowners (end-users) experience unplanned maintenance and repairs. This study provides a design quality model for use as a survey tool among professionals and endusers. This study resulted in a table of 24 quality determinants marked as Housing Quality Determinants (HQD) grouped into eight sections. This research concludes that the existing design quality of affordable housing in Karachi could be enhanced by resolving problems related to design, construction, services, site development, neighbourhood and sustainability. The HQD model provid...

The paper presents a review of the published literature on the interrelated themes surrounding the application of IT (Information Technology) and its contribution towards integrating and improving the design and construction activities in CI (Construction Industry) of the UK (United Kingdom). The review also explores themes about the reasons of fragmentation of the construction industry and the opportunities for defragmentation. This study also identifies the potential of IT’s contribution in improving the design and construction processes, with particular reference to assess its potential for similar usage in Pakistan. The literature studied covers a number of disciplines related to this study i.e. from theorists in history, business studies, information technology, construction industry, economics, town and country planning and architecture, which are discussed in a systematic analysis of cross-disciplinary themes.

Abstract The art of mirror embroidery is one of the most unique aspects associated with Sindh (one of the four provinces of Pakistan, located in the southeast of the country), but only a little research work has been conducted on this major embroidery form. This research is designed to present a detailed study of the art of mirror embroidery in two villages of Sanghar (one of the largest districts of Sindh province, Pakistan), with an emphasis on its application on women’s wear and home furnishing products. The Sanghar district was chosen as the area of study, being one of the most important centers of mirror embroidery in Sindh. Qualitative data were primarily collected from two villages of Sanghar—Moulvi Khair Muhammad and Haji Abdul Karim Laghari—following a phenomenological approach and considering the technical, visual and cultural aspects of mirror embroidery in these two villages.

This study is aimed at investigating the level of basic information about common ailments and health risk among university students (at tertiary level) from three different universities at Jamshoro in Sindh Pakistan. The study is survey based on a questionnaire collectively illustrating knowledge about a disease and health literacy such as 1. Causes, 2. Signs and Symptoms, and 3. Prevention. In total, there were 8 diseases (HIV, HPV, stress, food poisoning, hepatitis, malaria, pharyngitis, and depression) included in the survey. The reliability of the questionnaire was checked using Cronbach's alpha (0.973). The tool was administrated electronically through google forms for the collection of the data. In total, there were 187 participants who responded to the survey. The data was analyzed through descriptive analysis to get the frequencies of the responses by the participants. The data shows that students' knowledge about stress (77%), food poisoning (71%), and depression (7...
