Learnings from two experiments were used to develop guidelines to support human-robot user studies with elderly users, in particular for experiments in an eldercare institution. Our experiences show that this demands a very strict organization, full cooperation by nursing personnel and

With our Situation Awareness Question Generator (SAQG) we automatically generate questions from an ontology. The experiment shows that people with no previous experience can characterize hectic situations rather fast and trustworthy. When humans are participating as a sensor to gather information it is important to use basic concepts of perception and thought.

In this article we explain how a triple-centered design compares to the use of a separate proprietary internal data model. We show how to deal with the problems of such a low-level data model and show that it offers advantages when

It is unrealistic to assume that such ontologies will be developed from scratch. Rather, we assume that existing resources such as thesauri and lexical data bases will be reused in the development of ontologies for the Semantic Web. In this paper we describe a method for converting

Ideally, users’ perception of competence matches the actual competence of a system. This paper investigates the relation between actual and perceived competence of transparent Semantic Web recommender systems that explain recommendations in terms of shared item concepts. We report an experiment comparing non-transparent and transparent versions of a content-based

In this paper we outline an infrastructure for loading and saving RDF/XML, storing triples, elementary reason- ing with triples and visualization. A predecessor of the infrastructure described here has been used in various applications for ontology-based annotation of multimedia ob- jects using

This paper tries to link both areas and show how the latter can benefit from the achievements of the former. First an overview is given of the major ‘assets’ realized by knowledge engineering. Next it is investigated how

The method identifies four steps in the conversion process. In each step, decisions have to be taken with respect to the syntax or se- mantics of the resulting representation. Each step is supported through a number of guidelines. The

Multiple existing on- tologies are used to support this process, including the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, WordNet, ULAN and Icon- class. We discuss knowledge-engineering aspect such as the annotation structure and links between the ontologies. The annotation and search process is illustrated
