L'ethnologue suisse Fritz Sarasin leur donnera le nom de « poterie Lapita ». Aujourd'hui les restes de ces extraordinaires objets de l'Océanie sont exposés dans les musées. Autrefois, elles étaient utilisées soit pour la cuisson des aliments, soit créées pour offrir en cadeau, soit pour servir dans des cérémonies, des rites qui avaient pour but de communiquer avec les dieux, les Esprits et rentrer en communion avec le Cosmos. Dans la psychologie de l'être mélanésien qui évolue de manière « magnétique » avec son espace direct, le monde des vivants et le monde des esprits sont transmuables, en de multiples dimensions ils s'interconnectent les uns aux autres, participant d'une conscience plurielle en expansion extra relative. Ainsi, la fusion avec la nature se faisait selon un ordre et des codes d'Équilibre qui régissaient cet ancien monde. Une poterie de cérémonie est un condensé de mélange réalisé à partir de quatre éléments précieux : l'argile, le sable, l'eau et le feu, qui ont pour certains des rôles totémiques. Destinée à un usage précis, l'esprit de la lune ou du soleil pouvaient y être capturé, pour sauver l'âme de l'humanité, quand celle-ci était en grand danger. Ici nous pénétrons le champ spécifique des cultes mélanésiens. Selon la parole des Vieux : « …la terre c'est la cendre des Ancêtres. Le sable c'est la poussière des ossements des morts... La terre est liée à la parole des hommes. L 'Océan est lié au monde des esprits… ». Le sable qui borne les côtes des îles mélanésiennes était considéré jadis comme la frontière naturelle des Esprits des Origines. Pour le mélanésien la Vie spirituelle nait sous les eaux et dans la forêt de l'Océanie. Le sable marque donc à la surface des eaux la séparation entre l'esprit et la matière. À l'intérieur des terres c'est le territoire des vivants et des Ancêtres. Au bord des côtes, le sable marque la frontière entre le pays des hommes et celui des dieux. Mais, depuis les colonisations des îles Océaniennes par l'évangélisation, la parole ancestrale a perdue de son éclat et de sa verve. L'imaginaire religieux chrétien a profondément modifié la conscience de l'Océanien, mais elle n'a pas su lui enlever sa géographie originelle, intérieure, son nènè ou mana, espace sacré ancestral coutumier. De cette façon quand des entreprises françaises ont commencé à exploiter le sable pour le compte du BTP, afin de développer l'urbanisme pour le bien de l'économie capitaliste, des clans s'y sont opposés. N'ayant aucune valeur culturelle ou naturelle dans la conception européenne et française, le sable y est une simple ressource économique qui participe de la bonne santé d'un système matérialiste d'autosatisfaction. Ce système est responsable de nombreux conflits opposant des tribus du bord de mer ou de l'intérieur des terres, sur fond de droit d'exploitation ou de revendication de propriété clanique. Il est grand temps de conduire devant un tribunal les sociétés coupables des déséquilibres qui engendre la pollution de notre Mère nature. Le sable doit être protégé au même titre que l'eau.
