The topic of formation of seafarers’ foreign-language communicative competence has always been relevant. Modern changes in the organization of the educational process due to crisis events such as the pandemic and hostilities have prompted search for new ways to increase the efficiency of teaching English to future seafarers at higher education institutions. The purpose of the study was to determine the components of readiness to communicate in the professional environment. Methodological tools for diagnosing the formation of various components of students' readiness for communication in the foreign language were developed. Surveys were carried out to collect primary information as well as tests to assess the state of development of foreign language competence and to find out weaknesses and strengths in the communicative activity of students. The broadening of the European and world space in the last years of the 21st century encourages direct contacts between state structures and social groups, provides a stimulus for cultural exchanges, scientific cooperation, and participation in international researching projects. У дисертаційному дослідженні здійснено теоретичний аналіз вищезазначеної проблеми з позиції педагогічної психології; розкрито сутність понять «компетентність», «іншомовна компетентність», «спілкування» та «комунікація»; охарактеризовано зміст і структуру, ознаки та показники сформованості іншомовної компетентності майбутніх моряків; розглянуто зарубіжний досвід дослідження проблеми підготовки моряків для міжнародного флоту; визначено стан розробленості проблеми формування іншомовної компетентності майбутнього спеціаліста та психолого-педагогічні особливості іншомовної комунікації моряків у міжнародному екіпажі. В статті описано дослідження, пов’язане з пошуком можливостей розвитку м’яких навичок серед студентів технічних спеціальностей. Аналіз психолого-педагогічної літератури показав доцільність сфокусувати майбутніх інженерів на читанні та написанні художніх історій про науку та технології. За допомогою спеціально розробленого опитувальника ми наштовхнули майбутніх інженерів на думку про можливість не тільки читати, але й писати історії про науку. Ми провели опитування, метою якого було не тільки отримати статистичні дані про емоційний вплив текстів, а також формувати мотивацію до читання та написання художніх історій про науку, до розробок винаходів та наукових теорій. Опитувальник складався з питань до трьох текстів, складених без експресивних елементів, у формі біографічної інформації про письменників-винахідників, письменників, які передбачили відомі винаходи та письменників, які розробили наукові теорії. It was mentioned that the ability to establish a positive relationship between the members of international crews is an urgent issue. This ability influences not only the safety of navigation, but the mental health of seafarers as well. Foreign language competence is essential for the resolution of this problem. Successful everyday communication of seafarers depends on a number of factors: the awareness of cross-cultural, religious and cross-generational differences will help establish a friendly communication onboard a ship with an international crew. This paper presents a study on cross-generational communication of future seafarers. Our study empirically proved that the ability of mutual communication between different age groups facilitates the establishment of friendly relationships onboard a ship. У статті викладено зміст психологічних теорій, які дозволяють прогнозувати та пояснити деякі помилки, що виникають у тих, хто вивчає іноземну мову. Проведено котрастне порівняння та аналіз помилок у вимові та вживанні граматичних конструкцій в процесі іншомовного мовлення як результат інтерференції рідної мови. Також описано особливості мислення англійською мовою українськими студентами. Простежено зв’язок теорії інтерференції з теорією уникнення. Дослідження проведено з метою удосконалення навчання іноземній мові в немовних вузах.

In modern psychological and pedagogical sources various approaches to teaching a foreign language are presented, which is considered as a means of developing professional competence. At the same time, there is a lack of systematic psychological and pedagogical research papers of the conceptual foundations of the L2 acquisition using e-learning technologies. Implementation of e-learning as the instrument and the tool for L2 acquisition (in our research Maritime English acquisition) can be successful under different psycho-pedagogical conditions. We offer own model of psycho-pedagogical conditions of effective e-learning. This model includes the basic psychological and pedagogical theories, which are the basis for implementation of e-learning. We studied this phenomenon to gain new opportunities for the development of soft skills in students of technical specialties and to widen the possibility of popularizing scientific achievements. The chronological boundaries of the study cover the period of XVIII – the first half of XX century; geographical boundaries cover Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. Abstract—Ship engineers are civil engineers with special knowledge of marine and water transport engineering therefore the article appeals to the lecturers
of English for engineering students. The authors of this article share the experience of experimental English language training which was preceded by a thorough study of the theoretical works of contemporary scholars and practitioners in
the field of foreign language training of civil and marine engineers. Summarizing
new trends led to defining a complex of approaches which makes the design of
the course efficient. The results of the experimental training allowed to formulate
practical recommendations how to realize new trends and approaches in the textbooks’ design, taking into account qualitative changes both in the field of educational technologies and in the cognitive abilities of students. We proved that the
complex of offered approaches provide better education and reflect the changes
in psychology, philosophy, and pedagogy along with new technological platforms. We offer additional discussions concerning creating a modular course of
English for ship engineers which could be internationally accepted by institutions
that train specialists for the marine industry. The marine industry is globalized
therefore, uniform standards for the training of seafarers are important and the
idea to have the module course of English for ship engineers would be enthusiastically welcomed by all countries.

The target audience of this article is Maritime English teachers. We have been researching students' pronunciation before and after a shipboard training in multinational crews. We described the phenomena: The students after a long (approximately 6 months' shipboard training at sea) returned in the English lecture room with a new acquired accent. From the planed interviews with the surveyed we got information about the national composition of the multinational crews. Then we analyzed information about the peculiar properties of these nations' pronunciation. We also studied the features that form an accent in English of the Ukrainians. We claim that the theory of converge (make their speech similar to the style of their addressee) and diverge (make their speech different to the style of their addressee) can explain the accent of the students after the shipboard training in a multinational crew. But we assert that inaccuracies in the pronunciation of certain words can distort the accuracy of the utterance and will lead to violations of professional activity. In this connection we consider that any accent in seafarers' speech has a negative effect on the safety of navigation and seafarers should tend to Standard English pronunciation. Nevertheless, an acquired accent as a result of convergent behavior , have a positive effect in the social-psychological aspect. The research proves that the teachers of Maritime English should: consider the accent as manifestation of ability to use convergence; teach and accept only Standard English especially in the context of safety of navigation; understand the psychological origins of the desire to demonstrate the acquired accent as a manifestation of divergence and skillfully shape the motivation of students to have a standard pronunciation.

This article describes the study of psycholinguistic process of speech perception by future seafarers. The described study proves the role of psycholinguis-tic aspects in the process of forming foreign language competence of seafarers. Diagnostics of the level of perceptual skill development has been carried out and the way of its further correction in the process of English language teaching at higher educational institutions for maritime training areas have been worked out. Requirements for psycho-acoustic properties of the voices of the future seafarers are caused by the conditions of their life activity at sea and their future professional duties. Noise, vibration, bad weather require skills to wield the power of voice (psycho-acoustic dimensions). The need to speak in such conditions requires the ability to control the volume of voice when speaking. Based on the fact that the students of higher educational institutions of marine areas—the future officers, their speech should be clear and assertive. Psycho-acoustical aspect, in our opinion, precedes the development of speech perception skills and the ability to control the sound of speech. The results of diagnostics of the formed level of seafarers' skills to assess the quality of their speech and their formed level of skills and abilities as a listener have prompted us to develop psycholinguistic exercises to improve speech perceptual skills of future seafarers that will enable them to improve professional communication and interpersonal communication at sea.
