There are many approaches to teaching and learning available to teachers. However, educators and educational researchers have focused attention on approaches that ensure active learning of students and social interaction in the teaching-learning process. One of the approaches that promote students learning through active engagement and social interaction is collaborative learning. The chapter attempts to help teachers and pre-service teachers to understand collaborative learning as an inductive approach to teaching and learning. It examines important issues like meaning and elements of collaborative learning; collaboration and cooperation; advantages and challenges with implementation of collaborative learning. Teachers' role in the implementation of collaboration learning as well as collaborative learning techniques is also covered.

Before one gets into a classroom to teach, he or she needs to have acquired some basic teaching skills. Teaching in a conventional classroom seem simple, although may sometimes be difficult. However, teaching children from diverse backgrounds can be challenging. No matter the number of years of experience a teacher may have, teaching immigrant children with limited language skills and in some cases weak foundation in formal education is a challenging task. This chapter critically examines immigrant children and their education, some of the challenges that hamper their learning, and some practical skills that teachers will need to effectively teach them. Teachers need to understand the complexity and diversity of children under their care, appreciate the circumstances in which immigrant children live, make the necessary efforts to retrain or acquire some additional skills to enable them to become competent to effectively support learning of the increasing immigrant children populatio...

Research is important to teacher education since teachers are supposed to be active practitioners who are reflective in their practice and able to use research ideas to find a solution to educational problems. Understanding the major research traditions is crucial in teacher education. It is important for teacher education students, especially those at the graduate level to understand issues of research. The purpose of this paper is an attempt to support students in teacher education programs to understand issues about research traditions and how they can be applied. The study examines the two major research traditions, which apply to teacher education and teaching and learning in general. Quantitative and qualitative approaches to research constitute major important paradigms in educational research, in terms of design and implementation. Research is either quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of the two approaches. Either approach has its philosophical basis and corresponding d...

The acquisition of 21st century skills through teaching and learning has become one of the greatest challenges facing education delivery in recent times. In the light of that, this chapter examines 21st century skills and how students could acquire these skills to become well integrated in the current knowledge and global economy. Further, this chapter examines the need to prepare students to acquire 21st century skills and competencies, so that they become relevant and well equipped for the current job market. Digital literacy and its importance to students are also explored as part of the relevant 21st century skills. This could be done through comprehensive restructuring of many schools' curriculum and modification of the way teachers teach and how students are assessed in educational institutions.

It examines how inclusive education can become an integral part of the processes and procedure involved in secondary teacher education programs.

School-based professional development of teachers is gradually gaining roots as an effective, relevant, and context-specific alternative to teacher learning and development. Apart from helping to update teachers' knowledge, understanding, and skills, it promotes the establishment of learning communities and for that matter, a community of practice in schools. It is cost-effective and collaborative in approach. This chapter attempts to link school leadership with school effectiveness through the application of school-based professional development of teachers. It is aimed at introducing school heads/principals, especially those in developing countries, to school-based professional development of teachers, as a viable option to teacher learning and development, in terms of its nature, principles and processes, theoretical basis, and models that can be applied in different school contexts. It also examines the strategic role of school heads/principals in promoting the learning comm...

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of beginning secondary school teachers in Ghana: their challenges, induction process, and the support available for them, and identify the need for a formal induction and mentoring policy for beginning teachers. Beginning secondary school teachers reported many challenges including delayed payment of salaries, problems with classroom management and assessment, and inadequate learning materials. The findings suggest that beginning teachers were not properly inducted into the teaching profession. Therefore, there is need for the government to create formal induction and mentoring policy for beginning teachers.
