Historically, there has been a deficiency of data for important chemicals, such as heavy metals, radionuclides and pesticides contents from Kura—Araks river waters. A NATO—OSCE 977991 project began to fill such information gaps as well as develop a scientifically based platform for transboundary water quality management issues. The results of 2 years monthly studies of 12 heavy metals, Ag, As,

Background: In this proposed work, the products of U radioactive decomposition: Ra, which has a comparatively great decomposition period and Ra intermediate product of Th were examined, which were more prevalent in water samples of the territories investigated. Natural radionuclides are usually observed more in artesian well waters than in river and canal waters, and less in comparison with groundwater. Materials and Methods: For studying the concentration of radionuclides in drinking and agricultural water, samples were collected from Kura River, Yukhari Garabakh and Yukhari Shirvan channels and from artesian wells in different regions. For measurement of radioactivity, gamma spectrometer with high-sensitivity Ge-detector was used, controlled by the software Genie 2000 (manufactured by CANBERRA firm). Results: The obtained results for well waters showed high activity concentrations; the total effective doses for all radionuclides were 2.54, 4.27, and 0.66 mSv for infants, children,...

Within the presented project, 29 water samples collected from different rivers of Azerbaijan were analysed to assess water quality and suitability for domestic, livestock, and irrigation usage. The pH of the river water varied from 7.79-9.34. Electrical conductivity (EC) of all collected water samples was within the range of 279-2738 μS/ cm. The cation chemistry indicated that out of 29 water samples, 16 samples showed a dominance sequence of Ca > Na > Mg > K, 5 samples showed a dominance sequence of Na > Ca > Mg > K, 6 samples showed a dominance sequence of Ca > Na > K > Mg, and 2 samples showed a dominance sequence of Na > K > Ca > Mg. The quality assessment showed relatively high values of EC, total dissolved solid (TDS), HCO3-, Cl-, and SO42-, in several water samples, which would make them unsafe for drinking, livestock, and irrigation purposes. The uranium concentration lies in the range of 0.0429 -7.0355 ug·L−1 with an average of 0.6162 ug·...
