Methods: a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients aged over 60 years treated for facial trauma in the period from January 2001 to December 2010 was performed. Result: of a total of 1,385 analyzed medical records of patients with facial trauma, 86 (6.2%) belonged to the group aged 60-89 years. The male gender was the most affected and the age group 60-69 years was the most frequently involved. The middle third was the most affected, and the zygomatic bone was the most commonly fractured. Conclusion: special attention should be given to the 60-69 age group, as while such patients present physiological changes inherent to aging, they remain active in society and exposed to risk factors for facial trauma.

Such postsurgical complications as bleeding, swelling, infection, dehiscence, pseudoarthrosis and paresthesia might affect individuals in both sexes and at all age groups. The presence of a mandibular third molar, a cross-sectional area thinner than the tooth-bearing region, and biomechanical forces might hamper the surgery, making it longer and more complex. Internal fixation is aimed at undisturbed healing under condition of functional and without any period of intermaxillary fixation. Adequate fixation depends on different fracture types, patients' general health and compliance, and the timing of the operation. This case report involves a mandibular angle fracture successfully treated with the lag screw technique, a simple approach to treat one of the most common fractures involving th...

The most common permanent missing teeth are the third molars, second premolars, and maxillary lateral incisors. Although hypodontia does not represent a serious public health problem, it may cause masticatory and speech dysfunctions and esthetic problems. Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) is believed to play an important role in tooth development. Its gene is expressed at bud, cap, and bell stages of odontogenesis. Genetic polymorphisms in the TGF-beta1 gene promoter were shown to interfere with the transcriptional activity of this gene. To further investigate the role of the TGF-beta1 gene in human hypodontia, we analyzed the frequencies of the -509 polymorphism (C-T) alleles and -800 polymorphism (G-A) alleles and genotypes in the TGF-beta1 gene promoter in 51 Caucasian subjects with hypodontia and 48 control individuals. Our data suggest that these TG...

The study analyzed medical records of 1385 patients who were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at HSVP during the period from 1991 to 2010. According to the results of this study we observed that 35% of cases of facial fractures were associated with a body injury. It was recorded a higher incidence of facial fractures in the male population (82.6%), aged between 20 and 39 years. The main etiologic factors for this association were car accidents, falls and assaults. Most fractures were recorded in the mandible and the main body injury found was the abrasion associated in some region of the body, however, when considering fractures of the face middle third the main body injury was more associated with cranioencephalic trauma. Concomitant injuries in areas other than the face should be expected first and foremost after high-speed trauma mechanisms and in association with severe facial fractures. The results underscore the importance of multiprofessional collaboration in diagnosis and sequencing of treatment who have sustained facial fractures.
