Consequently, racialised minority leaders (RMLs) with social, cultural, and political capital have been in demand to join newly created consultative roles. Problematising the practices of RML as gatekeepers, this paper adopts an autoethnographic research design drawing on Critical Race Theory, and the concepts of social, cultural and political capital. The study findings articulate RMLs’ journey to gatekeeping positions, the influence they acquire and how they facilitate and/or impede access to their communities. This research contributes to emerging research on hard-to-reach racialised minorities and gatekeeping by problematising practices and behaviours of RM gatekeepers and arguing for collaboration, men...

We outline key elements of learning design and explore the potential and challenges of widening access to leadership development through this form of learning. We note the importance of aligning the conceptualisation of the leadership approach to learning and the principles of open access. The paper ends by offering insights for leadership development practitioners.

This type of mindset can provide a fertile backdrop upon which international actors can enlarge their repertoire of management tools and thus their ability to act appropriately in an increasingly globally interconnected business environment. In this paper, we argue that Ubuntu, a philosophy generally perceived as Sub-Saharan African, has much to offer in this context. Therefore, if intercultural management thinking is to consider ‘Western’ as well as ‘non-Western’ approaches to management, then we propose that Ubuntu should be integrated into current theories. Ubuntu is particularly relevant since it provides a counterbalance to individualistic and utilitarian philosophies that tend to dominate in the ‘West’. The purpose of this paper is thus to expand the understanding of Ubuntu and discuss how the va...

The connections between Ireland and Africa have long been maintained in a singular direction and ... more The connections between Ireland and Africa have long been maintained in a singular direction and form as missionary aid sent from Ireland to African countries. From long before the days of the notorious little red box with the carved image of a Black child, that so many recall as the ‘pennies for the black babies’ collection, Ireland has sent economic and human resources south to Africa. Irish religious and lay missionaries continue to play key development aid and crisis response roles in many African nations. Apart from the missionary organisations, other Irish agencies are involved in development work in Africa. The Irish government, through Irish Aid, under the auspices of the Department of Foreign Affairs, contributes to the development process in Africa and other parts of the ‘developing world’. All the priority countires, i.e. those countries that receive special attention when Irish aid is being disbursed and with whom there are special bilateral arrangements on a government-...

Since the mid-1990s, Ireland has undergone rapid economic expansion with the recent economic growth resulting in approximately 252,000 migrants entering Ireland over the last 6 years, according to the Irish Times (2003). While a large number of these are returning Irish nationals, there has been a significant increase of non-Irish nationals from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland entering the country, primarily as temporary migrant workers. Additionally, the number of people applying for refugee status has increased from 39 in 1992 to just over 10,000 in the year 2001. Know Racism, the national anti-racism programme, suggested that in 2002, 116,588 non-EEA nationals registered with immigration officials nationally. It was estimated at the time that there were 160 different nationalities living in Ireland. Economists have been suggesting that...
