XIII.
The myth of Charlemagne’s long stay in Ascoli Piceno, before his imperial coronation (800), was not elaborated ex novo by the local historiography of the 17th and 18th centuries. It’s in fact consistent with the forms and contents of two apocryphal documents elaborated between the 10th and 12th centuries at the episcopal curia of the city. It’s a asset swap agreement stipulated by Count Ludugari with Bishop Iustolfo (794?) and a diploma granted by Charlemagne himself and signed at the tomb of the patron saint of Ascoli St. Emidio, on his feast day (August 5th, 800). The Carolinian diploma, in particular, offers clear evidence of the need for representation and legitimacy of the Ascoli episcopate, within the framework of a historical identity that is of fundamental importance for the new urban image of the city. Epigraphic and literary culture is an integral part of this reality, and the proposed re-reading of the epigraph of the Porta Musae now reused in a wall of the cathedral is part of the theme. Recently attributed to the Renaissance age, this important testimony is here dated back to the 12th century. Finally, two brief treatises address new issues concerning the cathedral itself. A relief with the figure of a bishop, already belonging to a 12th century portal, is recognized as a “portrait” of a local prelate. The restorations completed in 2023 then make it possible to re-present the reading of the medieval crypt in all its aspects. A vast pictorial decoration from the 14th century followed a probable reconstruction carried out in the 13th century.
The area of Arquata del Tronto was first affected by the seismic events that occurred in central Italy in 2016 and 2017. The Amatrice earthquake (August 24, 2016) caused many victims and caused serious damage, and the situation worsened with the Norcia earthquake (October 30, 2016). In a truly bleak picture, two precious historical-artistic testimonies in particular have resisted. These are two Renaissance Marian churches, located along piedmont itineraries that were once heavily furrowed.
The sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve in Faete (last decade of the 15th century) has on the back wall a pictorial apparatus shaped like an enormous tabernacle that surrounds the central icon. There is a workshop that clearly refers to the style of Carlo Crivelli and his followers, without however ignoring the orientations of the Camerino area. The small temple of the Madonna del Sole of Capodacqua (about 1550), once attributed to Cola dell'Amatrice, is a building with a central plan that connects well with the series of Marian sanctuaries on the roads leading to Loreto. A monumental Assumption of the Virgin painted inside, clearly inspired by Raphael, is perhaps attributable to the hand of Michelangelo Carducci da Norcia.
Both buildings were damaged, and the little temple of Capodacqua was in danger of collapsing. Only a providential safety measure, completed a few moments before the Norcia earthquake, averted this end.

At the ancient gate of the castle of Piagge (Terre Roveresche, province of Pesaro-Urbino) there is a hypogeum dug into the sandstone. Used until the last century as a cellar, it is characterized by a floor plan and a decorative apparatus that are very particular. The analysis allows us to identify a meeting place from the Middle Ages, with a semiliturgical character and at the service of a small group of followers. The link with the reuse of the Bartoccini Tomb of Tarquinia suggests in particular that the hypogeum was designed by the Templars around the years 1225-1250.

Poverty constitutes a very meaningful theme in the evocation of the Middle Ages, both – on an ideal level – for its Christological implications, and for its concrete evidence in the society, of which it constitutes an essential feature. The contribution outlines a synthesis of the phenomenon with particular attention to forms of assistance, with an absolute protagonism of the Church which is gradually being replaced by the State. As regards the central Middle Ages, the hospitals located in the mountain passes, the particular case of the Brolo in Milan and the complex of San Giovanni di Prè in Genoa are mentioned. The late Middle Ages are recalled through the rich casuistry offered by Tuscany (Siena, Arezzo, Florence), without forgetting the role played by Milan with the birth of Ca’ Granda, where state intervention leads to a concentration of hospital activity in a complex of refined structure.
The analysis of the exemplary case of the Casa dei Crescenzi in Rome opens the recall of the medieval domus, seen as a faithful image of the family dynasty according to the concept of patrilinearity. The noble tower is then analyzed as a strong sign of the noble factions, with a symbolic and defensive meaning that goes beyond any strictly military logic. Overcoming the tower as a necessary complement to the noble residence leads to two consequences: the surviving towers retain an aesthetic significance as an essential complement to the urban landscape, while the palace (as seen early in Venice) indicates the new dominant line of the noble building. When it comes to seeing the reality of family relationships, the role of the woman lends itself to multiple interpretations. Hereditary logic and dynastic memory itself do not recognize any importance, but the exemplary case of the widow Alessandra Macinghi shows what weight the sense of affection could have in the fate of a house.

VIII agli inizi del sec. XIII.
This article proposes a series of topics related to the history of the art of Ascoli Piceno in the period from the end of the eighth century to the beginning of the thirteenth century. In this way the author intends to offer an update on some of the themes he has already dealt previously. First a purely historiographical theme is illustrated, on a statement by Saint Pier Damiani relating to a bishop Esculano. Then considerations are made on some reuse elements from the early Middle Ages present in the episcopal complex. A new chronological hypothesis is proposed on the figured marble slabs that are present in the main altar of the cathedral, in connection with the analogous specimens of Ancona. The Romanesque cycles of Sant’Ilario and Sant’Angelo Magno are affected by some clarifications, while in San Gregorio Magno a Pre-Romanesque fresco is proposed for the first time. As for the thirteenth century, the author advances the hypothesis of a mosaic on the Romanesque façade of the cathedral.

In the Palazzo dell’Arengo in Ascoli Piceno, situated in the south of the Marche, there is a fragmentary epigraph from 1165 which was originally attached on the front of a tower house. This was known to local historians already in the 17th century, although it was investigated superficially, both as an expression of a specific urban reality, and as a reflection of wider political and cultural situations. There is a clear connection to Rome on an ideal level, but also on a level of immediate concreteness, due to the schism which was then underway. The epigraph also testifies to the emergence of aristocratic architecture which follows the building models promoted by the episcopate of Ascoli. In the absence of secular authorities, the bishops strengthened the defences of the city and created fortified residences.

The thirteenth-century church of San Marco on the cliff of the homonymous hill, south of Ascoli Piceno, is the surviving building of a Cistercian foundation, originally under the auspices of the local bishop. It is the most conspicuous sign of a long tradition of monastic life, dating from the seventh century and brought to its culmination in the thirteenth century from the experience of Friar Saladin and the coming of St. Francis. The analysis of the building reveals a remarkable engagement structure, which is explained by the conspicuous endowment of the hermitage, soon become an eye-catcher in the religious life of the city. In the same foundation the Guelphic nobility could play a role: it had found in the hill a symbolic stronghold. Despite the fragmentary state, the unpublished surviving frescoes in the chapel of the ground floor (among which is highlighted a singular Virgin Queen) show an accurate layout that is related to Abruzzo decorations of Benedictine sphere.

Between the valley bottom and hill localities that are located along the upper Tronto valley, in the territories of the Municipalities of Roccafluvione and Acquasanta Terme, there are some examples of historical buildings and of pictorial and sculptural decoration ranging from the 14th to the 16th century. These are unknown or little known elements that reveal vivacity and originality of approach.
Thanks to the analysis provided, these specimens reveal a foothill environment that is anything but closed and backward, but worthy of being valued with greater attention, especially following the recent earthquakes.
