"The technological and morphological innovations developed by the Celtic peoples of Western Europe had a great impact in the Mediterranean during more than four centuries, managing to cause a strong influence in the panoplies of some of the most open-minded southern cultures.
Within this framework, the Iberian Peninsula was one of the regions where the La Tène weaponry was more popular, but in turn, a place where this weaponry underwent major transformations in order to adapt to local tastes. In this paper, all these adaptations are presented starting from the direct examination of the weapons, their typological classification and the study of its geographical, tactical and symbolic impact. Thus, a strong presence of these weapons can be observed in certain regions such as the northeast of the peninsula, where we could speak of the predominance of complete panoplies inspired by those of La Tène, or the Celtiberia, where the strong influence of the La Tène-type swords generated a series of local versions that led to the successful roman gladius hispaniensis.
This book includes more than 300 illustrations, detailed maps and graphs, as well as a complete catalogue with nearly 200 swords, 50 elements of shields and a handful of spearheads and helmets."

Today we know of more than 360 weapons in peninsular contexts that display influences of this kind. The forms, types and technology of these weapons varied considerably over time, reflecting the various cultures that shaped the cultural landscape of the peninsula in the Second Iron Age and the continuity or interruption of external influences. Celtiberia and more particularly the peninsular Northeast were the areas where these influences had greatest impact, above all on the regions that produced their own versions of these weapons. In both cases, it was the sword that played the most important role, but while the Iberians of the northeast completely transformed their panoply into a La Tène panoply adapted to local taste, in Celtiberia the sword was adopted but was just one more element of their already complex panoplies. But, while these external influences continued to have an impact in the northeast until almost the end of the Roman Republic, they had ceased in Celtiberia by the late fourth or early third century BCE. Reviewing these influences on weapons has led us to conclude that, contrary to what was believed until very recently, they arrived in the Peninsula very quickly or even almost instantaneously. Some formats that reflect the initial phases of the La Tène material culture, from the mid-fifth century BCE (LT A), are even documented – in considerable numbers – archaeologically. We also consider the question of where these weapons came from, analysing the various possibilities and looking at similarities with the production of La Tène weapons in neighbouring territories such as Aquitaine, Languedoc and Provence or the Italian Peninsula, and evaluating how the Punic or Roman armies directly or indirectly involved in the Iberian Peninsula acted as a conduit for these influences. We also look at the mechanisms that spread these weapons, concluding that wars, in particular major conflicts, were the primary stimulus for reinventing and adapting formats, although other equally complex aspects may have been involved, such as contacts between different cultures, which would certainly have existed amongst the peoples of southern France and the peninsular northeast.

Research on ancient mercenaries is fraught with problems, being the match between the scarce and partial data
provided by the literary sources and the archaeological record a tricky and difficult matter. The recent publication
of two books dealing with Iberian and Celtic mercenaries, by Raimon Graells and Luc Baray respectively, offers us
an opportunity to dwell on a pervading discussion when studying cultural and military dynamics, and long distance
relationships in Ancient Western Europe.

Contrary to what is traditionally accepted, we will show the lasting nature of this type of production and its presence in late 2nd c BC contexts despite their clear origin in 5th century BC.
