This chapter extends a model of how children in Indigenous communities of the Americas Learn by Observing and Pitching In (LOPI; Rogoff, 2014) to another region of the world, by examining which aspects of the model can be applied to the ways in which Balinese children learn with their peers and adults. We describe clear parallels in the role of observation and communication, the social organization of endeavors, and children's motivation to participate as they learn the music of gamelan (the traditional orchestra) that is used in religious ceremonies.
