Here we present an empirically based study on the proficiency of Bulgarian Mother Tongue (BMT) le... more Here we present an empirically based study on the proficiency of Bulgarian Mother Tongue (BMT) learners in placing unstressed personal pronouns (clitics) in Portuguese Foreign Language (PFL). Several studies, involving other MTs, have shown that this is a critical area, mainly due to the differences in clitics placement patterns between MT and L2. However, in the language pair covered in this study, a number of important points of contact can predict different results, suggesting a facilitating role for MT in the use of these constructions as follows (i) the fact that enclisis and proclisis are available and equally frequent positions in both systems and (ii) mandatory enclisis in the context of a verb in absolute beginning. The difference is related to the (preverbal) elements that trigger the proclisis, restricted in Portuguese to certain groups of words, and extended in Bulgarian to any constituent element of the sentence. The first data obtained show the following trends: (i) convergent use of enclisis in the context of a verb in absolute beginning; (ii) difficulties in the distribution of enclisis and proclisis in the presence of a preverbal constituent.
