We therefore sought here to define the floral specialization levels of 19 plant species visited by foraging insects, based on their floral attributes and on the behaviors of their respective insect visitors. Based on those two criteria the degree of specialization of each plant-pollinator system was determined. The species studied had eight types of flowers (open, gullet, capitulum, opened with oil-secreting glands, opened with poricidal anthers, brush, tubular, and transition between open and deep polypetalous), and showed a continuum of pollination systems, from the more specialized levels to the most generalized. The most specialized species were visited predominantly by functional group of efficient pollinators, whereas the most generalist species received visitors of four or five functional groups, but they did not act as efficient pollinators. Furthermore, in the more generalis...

To fill this gap, we carried out samplings of Euglossini bees in a continuous area of forest with micro-environments of primary (remnant) and secondary (regeneration) forest of Atlantic Forest. We evaluated the differences in the composition and uniformity of orchid bees in different micro-environments, in order to characterize the responses of the local environmental changes in the attraction of bees to chemical traps. Our results indicated that the composition and uniformity were similar between the two forest fragments studied here, although there are greater abundance of some species by micro-environments. We conclude that the characteristics of the sites in a continuous environment with primary and secondary forest do not seem to have an effect on the compositi...

This paper extends the distribution of the species by about 800 km west of the São Paulo state, its nearest record.
Changes in habitat caused by human activities (deforestation, fragmentation and loss of forests) ... more Changes in habitat caused by human activities (deforestation, fragmentation and loss of forests) impose environmental challenges for the survival of pollinator species and are the main drivers of the decline of pollinator populations (Ollerton, 2017; Wilson et al., 2018; Almeida et al., 2020). This important topic reminds us of the need to conserve natural habitats, since the pollination services performed by insects are not only essential to maintain biodiversity, but also for food production (Zermeño-Hernández et al., 2016; Stein et al., 2017), being considered of great economic value, since these environmental services represent U$ 577.00 billion annually and 35% of the food crops in the worldwide depend of the pollinating insects (Klein et al., 2007; Potts et al., 2016; Boscolo et al., 2017). Abstract Forest habitats are important sources of food and nesting resources for pollinators, primarily in urban areas and landscapes with intense agricultural activity. The forest fragment...
Plants may use different strategies to attract pollinators in long distance (e.g. floral display)... more Plants may use different strategies to attract pollinators in long distance (e.g. floral display) and in short distance (e.g. ratio between differentially colored flowers) scales. The Verbenaceae Lantana canescens Kunth is a wide spread species in open sites of the Brazilian Pantanal wetland. Individuals of this generalist species can produce a variable number of open inflorescences with yellow and white flowers that are organized in whorls. In this study we tested the hypothesis that increased floral display (long distance attraction) and the ratio between yellow and white flowers (short distance attraction) enhances the number of pollinator species and individuals. We observed flower visitors and calculated floral parameters in 38 plots of 1 m2 each, that contained a varying number of flowering L. canescens individuals. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and Bray-Curtis distances were used to account for flower visitor composition and the relative visitation rate, respectively. W...
