    Neuroimaging at the group level requires spatial normalization of individual structural data. We propose a geometric approach that consists in matching a series of cortical surfaces through diffeomorphic registration of their sulcal imprints. The resulting 3D transforms naturally extends to the entire MRI volumes. The Diffeomorphic Sulcal-based COrtical (DISCO) registration integrates two recent technical outcomes: 1) the automatic extraction, identification and simplification of numerous sulci from T1-weighted MRI data series hereby revealing the sulcal imprint and 2) the measure-based diffeomorphic registration of those crucial anatomical landmarks. We show how the DISCO registration may be used to elaborate a sulcal template which optimizes the distribution of constraints over the entire cortical ribbon.     We present an extension of the diffeomorphic Geometric Demons algorithm which combines the iconic registration with geometric constraints. Our algorithm works in the log-domain space, so that one can efficiently compute the deformation field of the geometry. We represent the shape of objects of interest in the space of currents which is sensitive to both location and geometric structure of objects. Currents provides a distance between geometric structures that can be defined without specifying explicit point-to-point correspondences. We demonstrate this framework by registering simultaneously T1 images and 65 fiber bundles consistently extracted in 12 subjects and compare it against non-linear T1, tensor, and multi-modal T1 + Fractional Anisotropy (FA) registration algorithms. Results show the superiority of the Log-domain Geometric Demons over their purely iconic counterparts.

    Human idiopathic scoliosis is characterized by severe deformations of the spine and skeleton. The occurrence of vestibular-related deficits in these patients is well established but it is unclear whether a vestibular pathology is the common cause for the scoliotic syndrome and the gaze/posture deficits or if the latter behavioral deficits are a consequence of the scoliotic deformations. A possible vestibular origin was tested in the frog Xenopus laevis by unilateral removal of the labyrinthine endorgans at larval stages. After metamorphosis into young adult frogs, X-ray images and three-dimensional reconstructed micro-computer tomographic scans of the skeleton showed deformations similar to those of scoliotic patients. The skeletal distortions consisted of a curvature of the spine in the frontal and sagittal plane, a transverse rotation along the body axis and substantial deformations of all vertebrae. In terrestrial vertebrates, the initial postural syndrome after unilateral labyrinthectomy recovers over time and requires body weight-supporting limb proprioceptive information. In an aquatic environment, however, this information is absent. Hence, the lesion-induced asymmetric activity in descending spinal pathways and the resulting asymmetric muscular tonus persists. As a consequence the mostly cartilaginous skeleton of the frog tadpoles progressively deforms. Lack of limb proprioceptive signals in an aquatic environment is thus the element, which links the Xenopus model with human scoliosis because a comparable situation occurs during gestation in utero. A permanently imbalanced activity in descending locomotor/posture control pathways might be the common origin for the observed structural and behavioral deficits in humans as in the different animal models of scoliosis.

    In this paper, we focus on the automation of facial reconstruction. Since they consider the whole head as the object of interest, usual reconstruction techniques are global and involve a large number of parameters to be estimated. We present a local technique which aims at reaching a good trade-off between bias and variance following the paradigm of non-parametric statistics. The estimation is localized on patches delimited by surface geodesics between anatomical points of the skull. The technique relies on a continuous representation of the individual surfaces embedded in the vectorial space of extended normal vector fields. This allows to compute deformations and averages of surfaces. It consists in estimating the soft-tissue surface over patches. Using a homogeneous database described in [31], we obtain results on the chin and nasal regions with an average error below 1mm, outperforming the global reconstruction techniques.
