Abstract. In this paper we introduce the concept of statistical deformation mod-els (SDM) which allow the construction of average models of the anatomy and their variability. SDMs are built by performing a statistical analysis of the defor-mations required to map anatomical features in one subject into the corresponding features in another subject. The concept of SDMs is similar to active shape mod-els (ASM) which capture statistical information about shapes across a population but offers several new advantages over ASMs: Firstly, SDMs can be constructed directly from images such as MR or CT without the need for segmentation which is usually a prerequisite for the construction of active shape models. Instead a non-rigid registration algorithm is used to compute the deformations required to establish correspondences between the reference subject and the subjects in the population class under investigation. Registration is a technique nowadays commonly used in med- ical imaging. A drawback of most of the current registration schemes is that all tissue is being considered as non-rigid. Therefore, rigid objects in an image, such as bony structures or surgical instruments, may be transformed non-rigidly. In this paper, we integrate the concept of lo- cal rigidity to the FLexible Image Registration Toolbox (FLIRT). The idea is to add a penalty for local non-rigidity to the cost function and thus to penalize non-rigid transformations of rigid objects. As our exam- ples show, the new approach allows the maintenance of local rigidity in the desired fashion. For example, the new scheme is able to keep bony structures rigid during registration.

Video event detection (VED) is a challenging task especially with a large variety of objects in the environment. Even though there exist numerous algorithms for event detection, most of them are unsuitable for a typical consumer purpose. A hybrid method for detecting and identifying the moving objects by their color and spatial information is presented in this paper. In tracking multiple moving objects, the system makes use of motion of changed regions. In this approach, first, the object detector will look for the existence of objects that have already been registered. Then the control is passed on to an event detector which will wait for an event to happen which can be object placement or object removal. The object detector becomes active only if any event is detected. Simple training procedure using a single color camera in HSV color space makes it a consumer application. The proposed model has proved to be robust in various indoor environments and different types of background scenes. The experimental results prove the feasibility of the proposed method.

—Hough transform (HT) is a typical method to detect or segment geometry objects from images. In this paper, we study the principle of Hough Transform and its mathematical expressions, and try to use a new approach based on Hough transform for quick line and circle detection in image processing. Our method accurately detected some simple graphics, such as straight line of different direction, circles of different detection, thickness and different number. The results show that our method is less memory consumption and calculated fast, which could be applied for line detection and segmentation in 3D ultrasonic image.

We describe a new method to cut a precise, high-quality femoral cavity in Revision Total Hip Replacement surgery (RTHR) using a surgical robot and an intra-operative C-arm fluoroscope. With respect to previous approaches, our method contains several new features. (1) We describe a novel checkerboard plate designed to correct the geometric distortion within fluoroscopic images. Unlike previous distortion correction devices, the plate does not completely obscure any part of the image, and the distortion correction algorithm works well even when there are some overlaid objects in the field of view. (2) Also included are a novel corkscrew fiducial object designed to be integrated with the robot end-effector, and a 6D pose estimation algorithm based on the two-dimensional (2D) projection of the corkscrew, used in robot-imager registration and imager co-registration. (3) In addition, we develop a cavity location algorithm, which utilizes image subtraction and 2D anatomy contour registration techniques. (4) Finally, we propose a progressive cut refinement strategy, which progressively improves the robot registration during the procedure. We have conducted several experiments, in both simulated and in vitro environments. This work represents a comparative study for the methods of registration for dental panoramic X-ray images. The study tried to find the best registration technique used to register images of the jaw. Three image registration techniques are implemented and applied to dental panoramic X-ray images in both spatial domain and wavelet domain. The first technique is based on cross-correlation. The second one depends on selecting control points from both the reference and the input images. The last technique is based on maximization of mutual information between the two images. In the wavelet domain, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has been performed to the reference image and the test image before the three techniques have been applied. Then the registration methods have been applied using approximation coefficients in the registration procedure. Diversas formas de representaciones visuales pueden ser encontradas en las distintas etapas
de la investigación arqueológica y museográfica como un recurso indispensable de
información. Desde mapeos de alta resolución con estación total, hasta el más simple croquis
realizado en el campo, fotografía, videos o dibujos a mano alzada. Sin embargo, últimamente,
los relevamientos tridimensionales se emplean en arqueología como fuente de información
que complementan la libreta de campo y que permiten responder preguntas sin acceder
físicamente a los espacios u objetos abordados, incluso como recurso de divulgación; y en
museología se emplean como una herramienta de registro, reconstrucción y recurso para la
exhibición virtual de piezas. En este trabajo se muestran los resultados de la aplicación de las
técnicas fotogramétricas utilizadas en conjunto con software de Structure for Motion, para la
creación de réplicas tridimensionales realistas, que sirvan como un recurso para el trabajo
arqueológico y museográfico. Este trabajo de registro fue realizado en el área de
conservación del Instituto de Arqueología y Museo de la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales e
I.M.L. de la U.N.T, empleando piezas arqueológicas y etnográficas de la colección de dicha
institución. Dicho relevamiento tiene por objetivo poner a prueba los alcances, límites y
posibilidades que nos brinda esta herramienta metodológica frente a la selección de diferentes
materiales cotidianos de la Arqueología y Museología.
