Materials and methods: The stress levels and the physiological effects of music on 88 healthy students of both genders in our medical college were assessed. Information related to demographics and their usage of music were collected along with their responses on the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) Questionnaire. The physiological parameters were measured before, during and immediately after listening to music of their choice for 15 minutes. All collected data was analysed by SPSS 25 software. Results and discussion: All the parameters pertaining to the respiratory system and cardiovascular system improved after listening to music. The decrease in respiratory rate and diastolic blood pressure was significant (p<0.05). VRT improved significantly (p<0.05) when done while listening to music espec...

Knowledge of this disease and its complications is an integral part of the curriculum for healthcare students. This study was implemented to determine the level of knowledge of varicella and the benets of vaccination among undergraduate students of different healthcare courses. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in RAK Medical and Health Sciences University (RAKMHSU) with due approval from the research and ethics committee. A Pre designed pre validated 20-point questionnaire was prepared using various related articles obtained from indexed, peer reviewed journals. Convenience sampling was done across the student population at RAKMHSU to assess levels of awareness regarding their knowledge of etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, prevention and treatment of Chicken Pox...

However, recent studies indicate that this development starts prenatally and that the activities that a mother indulges in, during pregnancy influences fetus personality and skills largely. This study was undertaken to analyze researches and experiments conducted and published in indexed journals to understand the bond between the mother and her fetus and its implications on various aspects of an individual. Theories could then be postulated on probable ways to modulate the fetal preferences in utero for future effective functioning of the individual. Discussion and Conclusion: Multiple studies have shown that the fetus develops an inclination for certain prosodic features while still in the womb, which influences their preferences for certain auditory and linguistic features later in life. There is compelling evidence that the flavor of food consumed by mothers during pregnancy and lactation, pave the way for the creation of a desire for a familiar taste in the offspring. Prenatal stress and depression in the mother can lead to major psychobiological changes in the baby and they were more likely to develop a similar temperament later in life. Many studies also showed a strong correlation between maternal brain activity and fetal cerebral blood flow, resulting in long and short-term neural changes in the fetus and eventually, the infant. In conclusion the activities undertaken by the mother and her emotional state during pregnancy significantly influences certain aspects of a person's personality, preferences and skills, which starts in utero and persists in later life.

It is essential to understand and update their knowledge through education and awareness programs. Materials and methods: The cross-sectional questionnaire survey has been conducted in RAK Medical and Health Sciences University (RAKMHSU) with due approval from research ethics committee. After going through various indexed articles related to our topic, a pre designed pre validated questionnaire was prepared. The questionnaire assessed the knowledge about symptoms, investigations, treatment and complications. This was applied after validation to second, third, fourth and fifth year medical students. Results: The study showed as that majority in both groups 93.5% and 89.2% agreed that they will be involved in taking care of diabetic patients in their future practice. The study also found that 65.2% group A didn’t agree...

To overcome this, we adopted an integrated curriculum and introduced a few active teaching/learning (T/L) methodologies, which promote deep learning and problem-solving skills. One such T/L methodology we introduced was team-based learning (TBL). Before implementing this active T/L methodology in the integrated curriculum, we evaluated the effectiveness of TBL in medical students from the traditional curriculum and aimed to determine students’ perceptions. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the perception of TBL in students who underwent integrated curriculum to evaluate the difference in their perception compared to the traditional curriculum. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in RAK Medical and Health Sciences University on the 1st year medical students from the t...

The recent changes in the educational environment that were caused by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) could be stressful and might affect the structure of faculty work. Aim: To evaluate the stress level among university personnel during the COVID-19 outbreak and its relation to their time management skills. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted on a sample of 56 university professionals. Each participant filled a google form questionnaire consisting of Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Time Management Scale (TMS). The results were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Results: A total of 56 responses were received from full-time faculty and staff with 60% response rate. The overall PSS (mean±SD) was 15.29±7.13, indicating a low level of stress among the professionals. The mea...

Methodology: Total number of students who participated were 145. Data was entered into SPSS 22 software and analyzed. Student ‘t’ test was used to compare among the groups. Results: The study results showed that all students exhibited highest scores of Mastery Approach goal motivation >10.62±4.24; but there was a decay in the later years of study and the Mastery Avoidance scores increased. This was more pronounced in the medical students (P =0.02). Conclusion: This work underscores the notion that health sciences students are highly motivated and strive hard to achieve their goals. This study can be used to develop teaching methodologies and assessments that promote deep approaches to learning.

There are several stressful factors students face during university life that may trigger sleep disorders. Abnormal sleep can affect learning activities and can be associated with both medical and psychiatric illnesses. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 276 participants randomly, 206 females and 70 males, between the ages of (16-60) using Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). ESS is a questionnaire that requires subjects to grade their level of sleepiness in eight situations commonly encountered in daily life. Collected data was analyzed by the SPSS version 16.0 (SPSS, Inc. Chicago, IL). Out of the total sample, 20% had a sleep score between 0-6, 16% had a sleep score of 7-8, and 64% had a sleep score of >9. Higher scores (>9), indicated the possibility that the individual will fall asleep during the daytime. The scores showed positive skewness for "Q4" (As a passenger in a car for an hour or more) and "Q5" (Lying down in the afternoon); and negative skewness for "Q8" (Stopped for a few minutes in traffic). The study showed significant difference in gender and total sleep time between EDS groups (Excessive Day time Sleepiness) and Non-EDS (No Excessive Day time Sleepiness). Medical students tend to sacrifice their sleep to fulfill the requirements of their challenging profession that requires extensive practice and knowledge. An increase in ESS scores indicates that they are vulnerable to fatigue and impairment of function due to sleep disturbances.

Background: The LFTs are one of the key investigations done during patient care. Several times during the patient workup, the complete panel of tests is done which is not necessary and adds extra financial burden on the patients. Medical students and young doctors should be aware of the clear indication of tests, to diagnose the condition and treat it accordingly. Healthcare professionals must use these test results in the proper perspective of patient history and physical examination to arrive at the correct diagnosis. Conclusion and clinical significance: This article highlights the main parameters tested in LFTs and their interpretation in a convenient and easily accessible format.
