La relación entre populismo y democracia es profundamente contradictoria. Por un lado, el populis... more La relación entre populismo y democracia es profundamente contradictoria. Por un lado, el populismo apela a la democracia en un sentido radical, asumiendo una posición tendencialmente autoritaria y de anulación de esa democracia que dicen defender. Por otro, la retórica populista se puede entender como un proceso de radical y permanente tensión de politización de todos los aspectos de la vida, defendiendo retóricamente esa politización como una expresión de democracia real. Esta contradicción no puede esconder que en sus términos esenciales, el populismo es y constituye una negación de la política democrática, entendida ésta como el debate y conciliación de opciones políticas e ideológicas diversas que asumen el consenso como necesario elemento básico a partir del cual asumir el pluralismo y heterogeneidad de las sociedades actuales estableciendo unos postulados comúnmente aceptados.

La idea de una union aduanera siempre ha formado parte del universo simbolico e imaginario del ib... more La idea de una union aduanera siempre ha formado parte del universo simbolico e imaginario del iberismo como proyecto articulador de una Peninsula Iberica politicamente unitaria. En el siglo xix este iberismo asumio una dinamica de convergencia que, sin embargo, no llevo a ningun resultado concreto pues, sobre todo en Portugal, nunca paso de ser un proyecto elitista e impopular asociado a los deseos incumplidos de modernizacion y a las frecuentes crisis de conciencia nacional que sufrio el pais. Las dictaduras de Franco y Salazar introdujeron un corte estructural en las relaciones entre los dos paises que permitio la reaparicion de las ideas sobre el mercado comun iberico. La sustitucion del iberismo por el concepto de alianza peninsular propicio una novedosa apertura a esta idea, especialmente significativa dada la hipertrofia nacionalista del salazarismo. Pero la falta de madurez de dos economias muy atrasadas y demasiado concurrentes entre si impidio avanzar por ese camino.

La literatura liberal ha presentado al carlismo como la vertiente mas dura y retrograda de ese tr... more La literatura liberal ha presentado al carlismo como la vertiente mas dura y retrograda de ese tradicionalismo que representaba la antitesis de su proyecto politico, ideologico e, incluso cultural. Si bien es verdad que sus idearios politicos divergen considerablemente, no lo hacen, sin embargo, en sus respectivos modelos de politica exterior, uno de los aspectos menos estudiados del carlismo. En este trabajo se pretende demostrar que el modelo de politica exterior mantenido por el carlismo tras las guerras civiles denota, hasta finales del siglo XIX, una sustancial proximidad con el modelo defendido por los gobiernos liberales que fijaron lo que se pueden denominar los grandes objetivos nacionales de Espana. Al abordar las relaciones entre España y Portugal cualquiera que sea el momento histórico escogid... more Al abordar las relaciones entre España y Portugal cualquiera que sea el momento histórico escogido, resulta siempre sorprendente comprobar cómo una frontera política, ausente de impedimentos naturales, ha podido levantar un muro difícilmente franqueable entre ambas comunidades. De hecho, la noción de vecindad tiene en el caso hispano-portugués una dimensión estática, basada en el hecho de una contigüedad geográfica, que contrasta con la dimensión dinámica propia de una relación de vecindad, donde los actores no sólo están unidos geográficamente sino que se da una comunicación y relación efectiva entre ellos.

Las narrativas imperiales del franquismo y del salazarismo fueron muy coincidentes hasta los años... more Las narrativas imperiales del franquismo y del salazarismo fueron muy coincidentes hasta los años sesenta. Tras esa fecha, la España de Franco asumió un nuevo discurso más abierto a la lógica del proceso de descolonización, a fin de evitar que su situación internacional se viera comprometida. Esta flexibilidad fue vista de forma negativa en Lisboa, aunque sin que ello supusiera cuestionar la fuerte relación que ambas dictaduras ibéricas mantenían, ya que tanto Franco como Salazar siempre consideraron que sus relaciones debían de ser prioritarias. En este artículo se analizan esas narrativas imperiales y como operaron en el caso concreto de la invasión india de Goa. La dura reacción de España a la política de Nehru reafirma la idea de que Franco siempre consideró que Portugal sufría un ataque internacional inmerecido, y que España debía alinearse con toda claridad al lado del otro país ibérico.
