Vietnam ist bei etwas kleinerer Fläche als Deutschland fast doppelt so lang – an der schmalsten Stelle aber gerade mal 50 Kilometer breit. Wie entwickelt sich Geschichte in einem Gebiet, das im Wettbewerb um das am längsten gezogene Land der Welt gute Aussichten hätte? Diente es als Korridor für Völkerwanderungen von China gen Süden? War seine Küste eine riesige Landungszone für Piraten und Eroberer? Oder boten Meer, Gebirgszüge und Urwälder ausreichend Schutz?
In Dschungeln und Höhlen entdecken Forscher die Spuren der jahrtausendealten Geschichte Südostasiens. "40000 Jahre Vietnam" gibt einen Überblick über die aktuellen Erkenntnisse der Südostasienforschung.
