The aim of this text is to discuss how it is possible to manage the art creating process in a film project, where the circumstances are often turbulent. In normative project management literature one proceeds from the idea that a project is realised in a stable world from a clear goal. In a film project there is often a need to change your plans, to improvise both in front of the camera as well as behind the camera. In the theoretical cinematic literature the responsibility for the final film text is more and more being viewed as a product of not only the director, but of the whole team’s work. Consequently, the narrative of leadership/management in a film team can be viewed from a relational perspective where the director and those s/he interacts with, are responsible for the action, relations and social situations they construe jointly in the process of filmmaking. The organization of a film project is a temporary one. The members of a team are seldom the same from one production ...

Certainly, the myth of the sole heroic leader who is governing, giving orders, planning and controlling still is a strong idea in several minds and media in our world. It is enough to open a newspaper and read about all the problems that the leaders should solve. However, a critic against hero leadership has gained growing interest. Mintzberg states that “we have become enamoured of a heroic view of management ” and what we get “is not management, but hubris ” (in Kavanagh & Leary, 2004). Yukl writes about a heroic bias in leadership research (2002). Consequently, other models have been discussed and developed in our post industrial world. A perspective called relational leadership argues that instead of focusing on the decisions of one single leader, the actions in a work team should be viewed as something which the whole work team is responsible for (Dachler, Hosking & Gergen, 1995; Uhl – Bien, 2006). There is also a growing body of texts concerning postheroic leadership which sug...

The journal is quite a new, international publication, with interests in arts, aesthetics and cultural matters. In this field there have been a lot of creative discussions going on concerning the research methodology. When we authors previously were working with the structure of the article, our belief, at the end of the 2000, was that the scientific status of qualitative research is widely accepted? That the basic arguments concerning the credibility of research would not be required in a specific article in journals which are familiar with qualitative research, and have published research reports where the studies have been conducted by

Creative interventions as a strategic tool in organizations have gained an increased interest with the hope to handle the complex, chaotic and interactional environments in the global competition. In this study we explore an organization which has involved an artist to facilitate a creative change in its working routines. The study is based on qualitative methods inspired by ethnography. Aesthetic perspective on organizations, design thinking and artistic intervention literature form the main theoretical frame. In the first phase of the two-year-long intervention project we have noticed a lot of problems depending on the differing business logics and the artistic logics, the artistic and designerly methods in practice have shown a lot of similarities.

To make a film is indeed a risky business. It concerns artistic expression, organizing processes and not least economics. It is part of the film director’s role to manage the uncertainty with all what it implies in a film project. However, is it possible to regulate an art creating process? In the normative project management literature one proceeds from the dream that a project is realised from an explicitly planned goal, achieved with means allocated in advance and within the afforded time. Concerning the leader role, it is "the superman" that is desired. My starting point in the study concerned the doubts about the narratives of leaders as charismatic heroes, in which the leader is assumed to be in full control of the course of events. Drawing on the social constructionist tradition, this thesis focuses on the relational aesthetic perspective in organizational theorizing. Organizing and leadership can be viewed as mutually constructing each other in human interactions i...

Organizations in both the private and public sectors need to find new, creative ways of handling challenges in the complex environments of global competition. Engaging creative professionals like designers and artists - with the aim of developing organizational creativity as a strategic tool - has attracted a lot of interest in different kinds of organizations. In our study, we followed a weekly intervention process led by an artist, within a trade union. The union wanted to bring change to its working processes, with the ultimate goal of increasing membership numbers. The study is based on qualitative methods inspired by ethnography. Creativity, design thinking and artistic intervention literature form the main theoretical framework. Between the members of the workgroup and the artist, we have noticed a lot of discontent and differences in ways of understanding business versus creative goals. We propose that knowledge of design processes, conceptualised in design thinking writings, ca...
