When Curitiba invented the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) back in 1974, Sao Paulo was in the midst of planning its first exclusive bus corridors. However, after 30 years of prioritising car-oriented infrastructure, combined with little investments in public transportation, Sao Paulo once again finds itself on the edge of urban collapse. After eight years of promises and few deliveries on monorail solutions, investments to improve bus operation are, once again, back on top of the political agenda all over Brazil, including Sao Paulo. But, can bus priority programmes deliver a cost effective solution for mobility?
