To evaluate the association between success and the benefit of repeated intrauterine insemination... more To evaluate the association between success and the benefit of repeated intrauterine insemination (IUI) cycles among women of different age groups. A retrospective analysis of 466 IUI cycles from 221 patients treated in afertility center of a university hospital between 2005 and 2013. The female age was stratified as younger than 35 years, 35 to 40 years, and older than 40 years old. The outcomes were the biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, live birth rate, and miscarriage rate. Kaplan-Meier analysis of the suitability cycle in each age group was also performed. The average age ofpatients was 35.2±4.6 years (range 21 to 49 years). The overall biochemical pregnancy rate was 18.6%. The biochemical pregnancy rate significantly decreased with advancing female age groups (27.6%, 12.8%, and 7.1% infemale age group younger than 35 years, 35 to 40 years, and older than 40 years respectively, p = 0.008). The other pregnancy outcomes were not different among female age groups...

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted in a menopause clinic of a tertiary-care university hospital during 2011-2013. Participants were peri- or postmenopausal Thai women aged at least 40 years, who have moderate to severe menopausal symptoms evaluated using the Kupperman index (KI). Outcome measures included KI, frequency of hot flushes, Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) score, participants' global satisfaction and safety outcomes. There were 54 participants assigned to treatment (black cohosh extract 40 mg/day, n = 27) or placebo group (n = 27). Both the treatment and placebo groups had comparable baseline KI scores (33.9 ± 7.9 vs. 31.3 ± 6.8), frequency of hot flushes (3.1 ± 2.0 vs. 2.8 ± 2.1), and MENQOL scores, all of which improved with time. Neither the improvements ...
Objectives To investigate the influence of patterns of body fat distribution and body mass index ... more Objectives To investigate the influence of patterns of body fat distribution and body mass index (BMI) on menopause-specific quality of life in peri- and postmenopausal women living in an urban area. Methods A total of 214 peri- and postmenopausal women, mean age 55 years, with intact uterus and no history of hormonal treatment were recruited. Anthropometric measurements were conducted as standard techniques. The Menopause-specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) questionnaire was used to evaluate menopause-specific quality of life. The Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare MENQOL between body fat patterns or BMI. Results According to the body fat distribution patterns, 53.3% were women of the android type and 46.7% were of the gynoid type. The android body pattern was associated with worsening of vasomotor and psychosocial domains (p < 0.05). However, overweight and obese women had slightly better scores in the sexual domain of the MENQOL. Conclusions Peri- and postmenopausal women with the android body pattern have lower quality of life in the vasomotor and psychosocial domains while women with normal BMI have the slightly lower quality of life in the sexual domain. The maintenance of premenopausal body proportion might mitigate the menopause-specific quality of life.

Many candidate genetic aberrations are on the X-chromosome; on the contrary, many genetic perturbations are also on the autosomes. The aim of this review is to summarize the knowledge of genetic aberrations on autosomes from chromosomal rearrangement, gene abnormality, genome-wide association studies and epigenetics. METHODS: Searches of electronic databases were performed. Articles and abstracts relevant to POI and genetic studies associated with autosomes were summarized in this interpretive literature review. RESULTS: Various genetic aberrations located on the autosomes were found. These abnormalities are from chromosomal rearrangement, which might disrupt the critical region on chromosome loci or disturbance of the meiosis process. Specific gene aberrations are also identified. The genes that have functions in ovarian development, folliculogenesis, and steroidogenesis on autosomes are p...

Objectives To describe the first case of premature ovarian failure with a reciprocal translocatio... more Objectives To describe the first case of premature ovarian failure with a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 1 and 4 and to review all the related literature. Methods A 39-year-old multigravida woman with secondary amenorrhea consulted for evaluation. High-resolution chromosomal evaluation, sonographic images of the reproductive organs and assessment of endogenous hormone production were performed. Results We identified a de novo balanced translocation 46,XX, t(1;4)(p34.1;q34) in our premature ovarian failure patient without other abnormalities of reproductive organs. Conclusions Most of the cases of premature ovarian failure are associated with the X chromosome. To the best of our knowledge, only 23 cases of autosomal abnormalities associated with premature ovarian failure have been reported and our case was the first with translocation between chromosomes 1 and 4. The cause of late-onset premature ovarian failure in our case might be associated with the caspase-3 gene, w...
