Within the English, German and French prose of the first half of the nineteenth century, mystery ... more Within the English, German and French prose of the first half of the nineteenth century, mystery turns out to be a fundamental element in the imagery of the city. It does not only reflect the anxiety of the individual who has to confront himself with the new context, but it represents a new method for attracting the reader's attention. The images of urban mystery are here analysed within a series of works (Balzac, Sue, Dickens, Tieck and Grillparzer) and distinguished in three categories: the city as a labyrinth, as a woman and as a monster. Within these categories, some traditional images are adapted to the new context of the metropolis. The authors' intention is, on the one hand, to take advantage of the sense of mystery in order to awake the reader's curiosity. Imagology and imagination: between issues of poetics and cultural and historical interests. Imago... more Imagology and imagination: between issues of poetics and cultural and historical interests. Imagology today seems to waver between two complementary poles that critics, either in the past or the present, tend to set against. Indeed, on the one hand there is a vast production of studies focused upon literary images considered for their relationship to the historical and cultural time frame in which they were originated, with the expected relationship to the ideology, the representations of the exotic and the social and cultural issues comprising the context. On the other hand, there are studies more expressly focused upon those images which intervene at the level of the artist’s creative process : they give rise to questions of poetics and show a specific orientation to the interpretation of his imagery. Owing to its analytic and hermeneutic possibilities, imagology today appears to offer the most promising perspectives within the field of literary and comparative studies.
The aim of this essay is to outline an operational protocol with which to carry out an analysis o... more The aim of this essay is to outline an operational protocol with which to carry out an analysis of the translated text. The starting point will be the selected texts (linked to the three fundamental procedures: linguistic transposition, cultural transposition and recuperation of the otherness). Then the differing levels of the discourse that the translated text foments (the critical point of view of the translator who is fluent in the original language; the point of view of the reader of the translated foreign language texts, who is not necessarily acquainted with the language of the original text. Finally the relationship that the translated text has with the original, taking into consideration textual and intertextual signifiers that the translation itself creates.
