This research study is integrated in the school project "Communicating Science" and within the subject of biology and geology of the 11th grade. The project was developed had as didactic framing an active learning. The core idea of project-based learning is that real-world problems capture students' interest and provoke serious thinking as the students acquire and apply new knowledge in a problem-solving context. The teacher plays the role of facilitator, working with students to frame worthwhile questions, structuring meaningful tasks, coaching both knowledge development and social skills, and carefully assessing what students have learned from the experience. Nowadays there is a serious concern for owning the perfect body with the least possible effort using “miracle” diets, doing intensive physical exercise and taking “fat burning” pills. Recibido en enero de 2011, aceptado en abril de 2012] Los programas de Biología y Geología establecen la utilización de modelos físicos analógicos para promover el aprendizaje de fenómenos geológicos. Dadas las características del estudio de la Geología surgen habitualmente problemas de escala, de representatividad de los materiales y de velocidad de los procesos, el estudio de los cuales se puede facilitar mediante los modelos analógicos. Mediante materiales de fácil adquisición se puede construir un modelo para el movimiento de las placas tectónicas, incluyendo rifts y zonas de subducción, el cual permite su manipulación por los alumnos, lo que potencia la comprensión de conceptos físicos y geológicos estrechamente relacionados. Su utilización debe acompañarse de la discusión de las hipótesis subyacentes al modelo, de modo que permita la comprensión de sus limitaciones. Our aim in this work is proving how the study of the behaviour of seismic waves led to the construction of the
physical model of the internal structure of the Earth in different concentric layers. The analogue models in
science education are essential tools that make scientific knowledge more intelligible and plausible, facilitating the
understanding and visualization of abstract concepts and may promote thereby the interest of students.
