This article presents the results of interviews conducted in Portugal within the European researc... more This article presents the results of interviews conducted in Portugal within the European research project "Demographic change and housing wealth" ("DEMHOW"). In a changing society facing demographic and welfare challenges, households\u27 strategies regarding retirement and care depend on variables such as age and family structure. Generally speaking, the importance of the family combined with homecare support is still largely evident. However, people without children seem more reliant on institutional care and keener on using all their available resources to pay for it. Within this framework, homeownership and housing equity could, of course, be central. While it is said that the mobility of PhD graduates would be encouraged outside the academic envi... more While it is said that the mobility of PhD graduates would be encouraged outside the academic environment, they continue to work mostly within higher education and research. This paper explores the professional life courses of 25 PhD Portuguese graduates in the Social Sciencesand Humanities in order to understand the process according to which they move or not from one sector to another. A first dataset results from an online survey of SSH doctoral graduates. A second dataset is made of the transcripts of 25 in-depth interviews with doctorate holders. The paper sheds light on their motivation and expectation, among other expectation emerging over the course of their doctoral research.

Apesar de ser comum afirmar-se que a integração de pessoas doutoradas fora do meio académico está... more Apesar de ser comum afirmar-se que a integração de pessoas doutoradas fora do meio académico está a ser incentivada, a realidade demonstra que estas continuam a trabalhar maioritariamente no sector do ensino superior e da investigação. Indicam neste sentido os dados analisados neste artigo, que explora as trajetórias profissionais de mulheres e de homens com doutoramento no domínio das Ciências Sociais e Humanas (CSH), em Portugal, procurando, nomeadamente, compreender os processos que envolvem as suas experiências de mobilidade sectorial. Uma primeira fonte de informação resulta da aplicação de um questionário on-line a pessoas doutoradas em CSH. Uma segunda tem como base a realização de 25 entrevistas em profundidade a pessoas que responderam a esse questionário. Particular enfoque é dado às suas principais motivações e expetativas em termos profissionais.
