ABSTRACT summaryIn this paper strategies based on a two-stage successive sampling scheme are proposed for estimating the ratio of the population totals of two characters on the most recent occasion. It is found that the proposed strategies perform better than the standard ratio when used in estimating the ratio of farmers' income to non-farmers' income. But when applied to the estimation of ratio of girth to height of teak trees, a loss in efficiency is observed.

The problems of estimating the population total in multi-character surveys in varying probability sampling schemes when the measure of size is not well-related to the study variables have been considered by Rao (1966), Scott and Smith (1969) and Arnab (2001). In the present note, their results are extended for intra class correlation models and general sampling designs.

The generalized regression predictor (greg) is used for the estimation of a finite population total when the study variable is well related to the auxiliary variable. Särndal (1982), proposed a few estimators for variance of the greg. In this paper, we have derived the lower bounds of variances of the estimators of the variances of greg belonging to certain classes of estimators under a superpopulation model. The proposed optimal variance estimators attaining the lower bound cannot be used in practice since they involve unknown parameters. Hence, some alternative variance estimators are proposed. Simulation studies reveal that the proposed alternative estimators are more efficient than existing alternatives proposed by Särndal (1982).

Singh et al. ([13]) pointed out that the Randomized response (RR) technique proposed by Moors ([9]) is not desirable because it fails to protect the confidentiality of the respondents and they provided two alternative strategies free from the above drawback but limited to SRSWOR sampling only. In this paper, generalization of one of the strategies is provided for complex survey
