The subdiscipline of the sociology of sport heralded its arrival on the international scene with an agreement in Geneva in 1964 to establish an International Committee for Sport Sociology (ICSS), and the setting up of this committee took place in Warsaw the following year. Over the past 50 years the subdiscipline has grown significantly and New Zealand has certainly featured prominently. In this article, we (a) provide a general overview of some of the early scholarly writing on sport that pre-dated the subdiscipline, (b) discuss how the field emerged within and between physical education and sociology, (c) highlight the social significance of sport in Aotearoa New Zealand, before (d) tracing the past and present state of the sociology of sport in this country, and finally (e) consider the future challenges facing the field both globally and locally.

ABSTRACT This article investigates the significance of sport as a social phenomenon in con temporary society, and examines the relationship between the value structure of sport and dominant ideological values. The role which sport plays in enculturating dominant values is examined, and cross-cultural analyses concerning the societal functions of sport are presented. Empirical research into the cultural values of sport and an analysis of sports literature suggests that there is an interdependent relation ship between the social institution of sport and the dominant ideology in contempo rary society.

Children participating in organized team sports are both the objects and subjects of competing discourses, which can create contradictory and sometimes confusing experiences for those involved. Influenced by Foucault's concept of discourse and drawing upon the experiences related by a focus group of sports administrators, this article argues that the construction of children's sport is heavily influenced by the collision between three dominant discourses each of which constructs sport in a particular way: one of sport as a long term development of sport specific skills (progressive-developmental discourse); another of sport with a pre-occupation with winning (competitive discourse); and another of sport that is more child-centred (fun discourse). This analysis increases our understanding of the complexities and tensions that shape a child's sporting experience.

The Cattell 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire was administered to 20 Ss from Montana and the personality scores compared to those of a similar sample of New Zealand students. Results indicated that cross-cultural differences do exist, the present group being more dominant, less expedient, and considerably more conservative than their New Zealand counterparts.
