This article aims to analyze land use and land cover change history and to propose a sustainable alternative for agriculture and livestock as an opportunity for rural development in these biomes. The statistics of the platform from the Annual Mapping Project for Land Use and Land Cover in Brazil (MapBiomas) were used in an annual historical series from 1985 to 2020. The analysis of land use and land cover changes indicates that the Amazon native forest was reduced by 44.53 million hectares (Mha), while pasture, agriculture and planted forest increased by 38.10, 6.06 and 0.26 Mha, respectively, over the 35 years (1985 to 2020). In the Atlantic Forest, for the same period, forest and pasture reduced by 0.99 and 11.53 Mha, respectively, while agriculture expanded by 8.06 Mha and planted forest by...

For centuries researchers have been warning about problems with our growth model. Events on both local and global scale have shown concern with mankind's destiny, thus making the sustainable development principie stronger and more consistent. This principie changes the development concept and searches for balance between this factor and the planet limits. The present chapter analyzes, in an integrated way, the economical, social, ecological and politicoinstitutional dimensions of sustainable Aquaculture. As far as Aquaculture is concerned, this new concept has been recently discussed, following the models of other human activities and having, as a reference, national and intemational conventions such as: FAO Code for responsible fisheries and Agenda 21 (National and International). However, as an emerging activity in Brazil, Aquaculture shows some particularities such as institutional lackof definition, information and a fairly rapid growth, which altogether may affect the activity's sustainability. Regarding the green revolution that is observed in the fields with the agricultural evolution, a comparison is made with the "blue revolution" that besides being incorporated to the present concept of sustainability might result in apositive balance of its benefits. As for the ecological dimension, one concludes that aquaculture is highly dependent on the environment and may be regarded as an impact activity, threatening its own sustainability. In this chapter, we describe information, examples and concepts for the useof water, land, energy, biological diversity, chemical products, trophic energy and waste reduction. As for the economical dimension, the possibilities of the activity are discussed as well as the relationship to the externai effects and its feasibility. The concept of "blue revolution" is also discussed when compared with evolution and results of the green revolution in Brazil and "The Law of Diminishing Returns", globalization and multidisciplinary effects. From the social viewpoint, the possibilities of job and income generation through Aquaculture are compared with those of otheractivities, as well associai and cultural problemsalready observed in some áreas. In this manner, small scale activity associated with large enterprises which generate market, technology and infrastructure, as well as a wide professional training, education and development of associations are essential. The political-institutional dimension transcends ali others. This chapter discusses the need of a public sector as a conflict regulator and promoter of sustainable activity. It is observed that the situation regarding public policies for the activity in Brazil is particularly serious. The roles must be defined, aiming at transparency of actions, and involvement of society as a whole in this sustainable development of aquaculture. The final considerations emphasize that we must change from a "country with potential" to a country of realities. Thus, one must search the basis of sustainable development, integrating ali mentioned dimensions and, in the Brazilian case, observing deficiencies of public policies. Finally, the activity, although highly environment dependent, presents risks and opportunities, and the public sector is responsible for minimizing the risk and negative impact, as well as maximizing advantages and benefits, believing that this could be the best moment for Aquaculture.

So, a 500 m2 marine nursery cage was laid down in neashore waters of Ponta Grossa community, Icapui county (Ceara Estate - Brazil), for the cultivation, storage and trading of live individuais. The fishermen introduced, through commercial fishery, about 15.000 juvenile lobsters of species Panulirus argus (99%), and a few specimens of P. laevicauda and P. echinatus, from ]une to August, 1995. Three samplings were made, one in each month with a 30-day interval. No statistical difference was observed in the mean tail length between the 1st and 2nd samples, perhaps because the occurrence of pre- and pos-molting lobsters was only 12.88% in the 1st sampling. In the 2nd samping, 42.47% of lobsters were in those phases, bringing about a significant growth rate. A significant difference was observed in tail weight between the sampling yiel...

The objective of this study is to analyze experiences in the “Products Associated with Tourism” project, which had as its goal strengthening the tourism production chain, particularly for food products typically connected with local tourism-related cuisine. The hypothesis is that sustainable tourism depends, among other factors, on coordination between specific activities and the context in which they are found, considering, and focusing on, social inclusion and environmental preservation. Thus, interviews were performed, as well as technical workshops and visits, participative meetings, professionalizing courses, integration events and establishment of a channel of communication between the three groups of stakeh...

Most families use traditional versions, which have a series of social, environmental and health-related impacts. “Improved cookstoves” referto cleaner and more efficient cookstoves. These include adaptations that improve energy efficiency and reduce indoor air pollution, bringing benefits such as the reduction of firewood consumptionfor cooking, reduction of the emission of polluting gases originating from firewood burning andfewer health impacts, also contributing to forest conservation. Although the improved cookstovessector is still relatively underdeveloped in the Brazilian semiarid region, in recent years interest inthese technological alternatives has increased. In this context, the present study contributes to thecompilation and organization of information referring to the use of improved cookstoves in the Braziliansemiarid region.
