The article talks about the life and the Works of the Venerable Servant of God, Sister Febronia Ferdinanda of Jesus, originally named Rosalia Flaminia Ansalone, a Franciscan tertiary in Caccamo, a Little town near Palermo where she was born on 6 June 1657, and subsequently a nun in the S. Chiara Monastery of Palermo, where she died on 23 September 1718. This member of the "Poor Clares", a prolific writer, stands out due, above all, to the six volumes of the Contemplazioni (1752-1759), which contain many private revelations received from God and various considerations on how reeligious life has to be radically lived, in a time when the majority of the women religious were, in effect, compelled to become nuns. In view of Sister Febronia`s reputation for holiness, the process for her canonization was started a fw years after her death; yet it was stopped in the first years of the 19th Century.

The way in which authority is understood and exercised in some of the new monastic communities in Italy is placed in the context of a reflection on the various models of authority in the Latin Church. The focus is on the Monastic Community ofBose, which is very similar to the model found in Basilian monasticism. Seven other new communities are examined more briefly - including those founded by Fr Giuseppe Dossetti and Fr Divo Barsotti; these, by contrast, draw mainly on the Rule ofSt Benedict.
