This essay studies the translations of the Qur’ān into Romance languages in anti-Islamic treatises written by Christians in the Iberian Peninsula in the sixteenth century. It compares three such works (here called Antialcoranes or ‘anti-Qur’āns’) that contain citations of the Qur’ān in Arabic, either in Arabic script or in transliteration, or both. These include the Confusión o confutación de la secta Mahomética y del Alcorán (1515) of Juan Andrés, the Lumbre de fe contra la secta mahometana y el alcorán (1521) by Martín de Figuerola and the Confutación del alcorán y secta mahometana (1555) by Lope de Obregón. It also considers glosses found in the Latin Qur’ān made at the behest of the Italian cardinal Egidio (Giles) da Viterbo (1518). We argue that these works merit detailed study, along with more studied Latin translations, as part of a history of the translation of the Qur’ān in the early modern period.

The main aim of this article is to investigate the similarities between the Latin translation of the Qur’an commissioned by the Italian cardinal Egidio da Viterbo (first version, 1518) and Quranic quotations included in a treatise entitled Lumbre de fe contra el Alcorán (Valencia, 1521) authored by a Catholic preacher, Fray Johan Martín de Figuerola, in order to corroborate the hypothesis that the texts share a common author. The person regarded as the link between them is a convert from Islam to Christianity known as Juan Gabriel from Teruel, formerly Ali Alayzar. The arguments in favour of this thesis are presented, first of all, within a historical description of the circumstances and coincidences of the people involved in the production of the two translation projects; secondly, textual evidence is put forward in which correspondences, similarities and differences are highlighted and discussed. We also consider the similarities to the quotations in Juan Andrés’s Confusión o confutación del Alcorán, drawing attention to a circle of other Christian polemicists around Martín García who were all working in various ways with the Arabic Qur’an.

Early Modern Europe was witness to an unprecedented interest in learning the Arabic language. This philological interest was connected to the evidence of Arabic similarity with Hebrew and the usefulness of Arabic grammars and dictionaries for studying the Holy Tongue. A field of knowledge was gradually created in which Arabic detached itself from its use as an instrument of pros-elytizing or diplomacy. This shift occurred through the translation and citation of Arabic sources, the purchase and cataloguing of Arabic manuscripts in the main libraries of Europe and an attempt to institutionalize the teaching of Arabic at universities. The exhaustive study of the Bible and its various tex-tual traditions, the need to coordinate these with newly acquired knowledge of other languages, including Arabic, and the refinement of historiographic and philological tools which were the accompanying processes all contributed to dismantling the walls between sacred and profane history. This package of new knowledge can be labelled 'Orientalism'. As applied by scholars to this period, the term refers to a crucial moment in the creation of Oriental studies in Europe characterised by the foundational activities of figures like Erpenius, Raimondi or Bedwell. This refers to both their works and their search for new texts with which to learn Oriental languages. Such 'Oriental scholar-ship' or early 'Orientalism' proved itself capable of creating basic critical, historical and philological tools which were problematic for extant textual and religious authority. The religious dimension was ever-present in a world dominated by polemics with the Europe of the Reformation and by the process of confessionalization. This essay analyses the comparisons made in the Apology against the articles of the Christian Religion by Muhamad Alguazir (c. 1610). Alguazir, a Morisco from Pastrana (Spain), was one of the Moriscos living at the court of sultan Mawlay Zaydan (1608–1627). The polemical treatise he wrote was sent to Maurice of Orange shortly after the conclusion of a treaty of friendship between Zaydan and the Dutch (in 1610) and translated into Latin. The polemic had a two-pronged later influence: on European debates about the Trinity; and it was used by Anti-Trinitarians and by German Lutherans in their polemics against them, on the one hand, and by Moriscos living in Tunis, viz. the expelled Toledan Morisco Juan Pérez aka Ibrahim Taybili, on the other. We study the transformations that the polemic underwent according to the translations and the religious transfers.

Se presenta aqui nueva documentacion que rebela su conexion con moriscos criptomusulmanes de Toledo y su participacion en redes moriscas. Esta nueva documentacion obliga a una nueva lectura del personaje e incluso de los Plomos.

Drie religies, twee continenten, vijf landen: een korte typering van het veelbewogen leven van Samuel Pallache. Deze reconstructie van het leven van Pallache, een jood van Spaanse afkomst, die opgroeide in Marokko, is een geslaagde microgeschiedenis van de joden in Europa en verkent de complexe loyaliteiten en identiteiten die ze tussen de verschillende werelden construeerden. Geboren omstreeks 1550 in Fez in een Marokkaans-joodse familie van Spaanse origine, werd Pallache gezant van de koning van Marokko in de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Provincien, koopman en piraat. This collection takes a new approach to understanding religious plurality in the Iberian Peninsula and its Mediterranean and northern European contexts. Focusing on polemics—works that attack or refute the beliefs of religious Others—this volume aims to challenge the problematic characterization of Iberian Jews, Muslims, and Christians as homogeneous groups. From the high Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century, Christian efforts to convert groups of Jews and Muslims, Muslim efforts to convert Christians and Jews, and the defensive efforts of these communities to keep their members within the faiths led to the production of numerous polemics. This volume brings together a wide variety of case studies that expose how the current historiographical focus on the three religious communities as allegedly homogeneous groups obscures the diversity within the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities as well as the growing ranks of skeptics and outright unbelievers. This essay focuses on the graffiti in a single cell of the Inquisition's prisions in Palermo, sipplemented with inquisitorial trial records and documents produced during an inspection of the Sicilian Inquisition at the behest of the Suprema in Madrid. The graffiti in combination with theses documents allow us to hear a polyphony of voices, not just the dialogic relation of inquisitors and victims that has been questioned by historians, but a new landscape which give voice to the inmates themselves. I aim at perceiving the voices of the prisioners, but also at the construction of their religious identity under the impact of their incarceration and trial at the hands of the Inquisition. I suggest that we see in cell 2 religious identily not as something that the inmates already had before, and which then underwent a process of radicalization, but rather as something actually created in the specific context of the prision

This study focuses on the Qur'anic material cited by authors connected to Martín García, Bishop of Barcelona (c. 845–928/1441–1521) in polemical treatises written for the evangelisation of the Granadan Muslims (converted to Christianity by the decree of 1502) and the conversion of the Valencian and Aragonese Muslims (legally Muslims until 1526). It considers two treatises, authoured respectively by Juan Andrés and Johan Martín de Figuerola, belonging to the genre that has come to be known as Antialcoranes, or ‘anti-Qur'ans’. Cet article est consacre a Diego de Urrea (+1615), traducteur et interprete de l'arabe, du turc et du persan pour les rois d'Espagne. D'origine italienne, Urrea fut d'abord secretaire de quelques seigneurs ottomans, puis travailla en Europe et en Espagne, et, enfin, devint a Naples membre de l'Accademia dei Lincei. Sa carriere est une illustration des usages de la langue arabe dans l'Espagne des XVI-XVII e siecles: Urrea traduisit les Livres du Plomb du Sacromonte a Grenade, fit un catalogue des manuscrits arabes de l'Escurial, travailla comme espion et diplomate, fut, enfin, le premier professeur d'arabe a l'Universite d'Alcalâ de Henares. Sa figure evoque aussi l'itineraire d'autres arabisants de l'epoque, comme Marco Dobelio, dont la biographie souligne aussi la logique des rapports entre l'Espagne et l'Italie autour des problemes lies a cette erudition orientaliste europeenne alors au berceau.

In Morocco, the Moriscos expelled from Spain between 1610 and 1614 were known, by the name of "Andalusians" and they formed part of an emigration process which had gone on for centuries. This chapter aims to show the continuity of a chiefly Granadan process of emigration to Morocco and to highlight the existence of a set of structures created by these emigrants, which were to serve the Moriscos expelled at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Such continuities and structures constituted long-lasting patterns which the author describes in some detail: a leading role was played in them by prophetic predictions and the desire to return to and even re-conquer former Peninsular territories. It is important to emphasise the emigrants' tendency to form autonomous communities that acted independently of local Moroccan authorities. Equally significant was the influence of the emigrants on certain political decisions made by Moroccan sultans.
