Prophetism

The tale of a meeting between Leonardo and Savonarola in the summer of 1495, later reported by Vasari (1550 and 1568) but confirmed by a memorandum remained in Leonardo's possession (Codex Atlanticus, f. 628 r), which refers explicitly to a "mission" assigned to him (presumably by Ludovico Sforza) to go to Florence, in order to get (through a competent mediator, probably Bernardo Rucellai) a detailed report about the new political rules promoted by the friar, lends credibility to a hypothesis of comparison between their anthropological conceptions, especially as they emerge from their "transfigured" use of the prophetic semantics, despite their shared repudiation of astrological quackery. If, on the one
hand, Savonarola's preaching does not have any properly predictive character, in terms of intentional "divination", standing rather as a projection or representation of the contingency of the current days, in purely political terms, Leonardo's riddles, which he literally called "prophecies", on the other hand - and similarly - transform the genre of presages or predictions into entertainment tools for courtly audiences, that, however, in some cases, become a vehicle for a critical evaluation of the troubles of contemporary society. The likelihood that, on the occasion of his convocation in Florence in 1495, Leonardo was able to listen to Savonarola's sermons, so steeped in apocalyptic prophecy, may provide an
explanation to the appearance of writings called "prophecies", among his notes, just in the last five years of the century. Their underlying vision of man, clearly pessimistic, offers significant points of contact with the negative anthropology advocated by Savonarola's preaching, which also makes use of animal apology, especially in the conceptual and ideological interpretation of the "anti-human" conflictuality among men, that makes them "beasts" towards themselves, in a sort of anticipation of Hobbes' famous motto homo homini
lupus.

La figure complexe du révérend pasteur Ntumi, personnage souvent réduit au rang d’« illuminé » ou de « marionnette du pouvoir », ne se laisse pas facilement appréhender. Cet article, sans prétendre à une analyse exhaustive du prophète et de son mouvement, en offre une lecture circonstanciée à l’aune des prophétismes congolais, de la géographie spirituelle du Pool et des séquences historiques récentes qui ont rythmé le « prophétisme guerrier » de Ntumi. L’étude révèle aussi plusieurs aspects méconnus du mouvement Nsilulu (sa dimension rituelle, ses dispositifs thérapeutiques et divinatoires, ses représentations symboliques, etc.) et discute ses rapports ambigus avec le mouvement prophétique protestant Nsikumusu, à la ligne de partage entre prophétismes violent et non violent.

Cet ouvrage raconte l’incroyable histoire du citoyen romain le plus célèbre du Moyen Âge, Cola di Rienzo (1313-1354). Homme instruit et brillant, il subjugue les foules par de beaux discours, rêve de rendre Rome à son antique gloire et prend le pouvoir en 1347. Il a alors trente-quatre ans. Visionnaire politique, humaniste ou encore homme de foi attiré par des idéaux de réforme révolutionnaires, il est considéré à l'époque romantique comme un précurseur de l’Unité italienne. Personnalité complexe, ambitieux et plein de contradictions, il n’hésite pas à se mettre en scène dans de superbes cérémonies, s’imaginant déjà empereur. Il connaîtra toutefois une fin tragique.
Cette nouvelle biographie illumine ce personnage hors du commun qui possédait l’art inné d’utiliser les mots pour séduire et convaincre. L'Auteur décrypte les ressorts d’une propagande qui permit à cet homme du peuple d’accéder au pouvoir. Il nous amène ainsi à réfléchir sur le thème toujours d’actualité de la dangereuse puissance de la propagande et des rhétoriques populistes.

Tra la fine del XV e l'inizio del XVI secolo, Leonardo intreccia la speculazione scientifica sui fenomeni meteorologici e sulla turbolenza atmosferica con una fascinazione letteraria e filosofica sul tema dell'ineluttabile disfacimento della materia nei processi di rigenerazione della natura, dando luogo alle sue ultime mirabili "invenzioni", immani e inusitate visioni di distruzione, anticipate da testi profetici in cui si pronostica la fine dei tempi, sulla spinta dei traumatici eventi politici contemporanei.

La présente étude se propose d’examiner les interprétations de l’activité miraculeuse de Jésus faisant de ce denier un prophète ou un magicien avant d’argumenter en faveur d’une troisième qui examine les miracles de Jésus en relation avec les attentes messianiques de son époque.

This thesis is about Areruya, the religion that the Ingarikó share with other subgroups of the indigenous people Kapon and Pemon, inhabitants of the surroundings of the Roraima Mount, at the Brazil-Guyana-Venezuela triple border. It is based on an ethnographic research carried out between 2014 and 2017, at different Ingarikó settlements, mainly at Manalai. Areruya consists of a crystallization of the prophetic movements that upheaved the Kapon and Pemon in the past, mainly in the 19th century. Many of them were led by shamans that from the ephemeral coexistence with Christian missionaries started to announce the coming of a cataclysm, associated to the promise for indigenous salvation in the Christian heaven and, in some cases, to the conquest of the goods of the colonizers. Presently, the Areruya followers do not recognize the missionary influence over their religion, which they affirm to be originally indigenous. It was then made necessary to reflect about this process of eclipsing, without nevertheless denying the claimed indigenous originality, once it resulted from shamanic translations of Christianity without the control of missionaries. The examination of the Areruya principles that shape the course of religious ceremonies and are present in their chants and prayers reveals traces of the old prophetic translations; and also an interdependence between two utopic horizons, that at first sight may seem contradictory: the spiritual salvation in the heavenly paradise after death, which would put an end to the evil ascribed to the earthly human condition; food abundance and quality of life in earth. Finally, this thesis identifies an association between the thanatology of the contemporary Ingarikó and the historical and cosmological transformations relating to Areruya. It speculates further about the effects of such transformations on their ontology.

“When I opened, he had gone”: Levinas’s Substitution in light of Husserl and Heidegger

I propose to look at Levinas’ constellation of figures: recurrence, obsession, persecution, substitution and saying, in chapter IV of Otherwise than Being. This is the core of his 1974 work. I tarry with a remark that Levinas makes there, “Our analyses lay claim to the spirit of Husserlian philosophy... But … the present work ventures beyond phenomenology” (p. 183, trans mod). Substitution thus returns to Husserl’s passive syntheses, arguing that not everything about sensibility and affect is meaningful or enters into associations of intentions. To dig beneath thematizing consciousness, required that Levinas adapt Heidegger’s hermeneutic extension of phenomenology, with its pre-structures (Vor-strukture), to open phenomenology to interpretive dimensions of lived immediacy. The question of passivity would requires reading Husserl through Heidegger. The task of opposing responsibility to Heidegger’s fundamental ontology, necessitates a return to Husserl’s phenomenology of passivity.

L'analyse des textes évangéliques mentionnant la rumeur montre que celle-ci était un élément bien intégré dans le fonds traditionnel concernant Jésus. Que Jésus ait été l'objet de la rumeur s'accorde par ailleurs avec le fait que les informations circulaient principalement de bouche à oreille dans le cadre d'une culture où l'oralité prédominait. Le rôle que jouait à cette époque la communauté dans la détermination de ce qui était honorable ou honteux explique que la rumeur ait influencé, en bonne ou mauvaise part, la renommée de Jésus. Les rumeurs à propos de Jésus faisaient écho à des préoccupations politiques et religieuses dont il est possible d'établir l'existence pour le Ier s. de notre ère. Si bien que ce qui se disait sur Jésus pouvait tout autant susciter l'espérance de ceux qui attendaient la délivrance eschatologique d'Israël que représenter une menace contre l'ordre établi que s'efforçaient de garantir les autorités judéennes.

An analysis of the Gospel texts that mention rumors shows it to have been a well-established feature in the traditional material concerning Jesus. That Jesus was an object of rumor makes sense given that information was mainly shared by word of mouth within a predominantly oral culture. The role of the community of that time in defining what should be thought of as honorable or shameful explains how rumor, construed either positively or negatively, had an influence on Jesus'renown. Rumors about Jesus echoed political and religious concerns that can be shown to have existed during the 1st century CE, so that what was said about Jesus could inspire hope in those awaiting the eschatological deliverance of Israel or, equally, pose a threat to the established order that the Judean authorities sought to maintain.

Being healed through the medium of water has become a debatable issue in contemporary Christianity in Ghana. Some prophets or leaders of Neo-Charismatic Churches/Ministries (NCM) or Contemporary Prophetic Ministries (CPM) have dug wells at particular locations where the water from the well is used for healing. Scripture passage used to support this action is John 5:1-9a and b. This paper attempts to do a dialogical exegesis of the passage under review, by considering other aspects of the text including variant readings and whether Jesus suggested a constant use of water to aid healing. My proposition is that Jesus did not advocate a continuous use of water to aid healing. This is palpable in the fact that Jesus did not use the water of the pool to heal the invalid man, prophets and leaders of NCM or PCM might have been influenced by Ghanaian religio-cultural beliefs in water and thereby found expression for it in contemporary Christianity in Ghana.

It is customary to derive the meaning of the āpilum of Mari from the verb apālu and translate the āpilum as “answerer”. However, this etymology does not correspond to the documentation of Mari, since no āpilum is attested as answering a direct question in Mari texts. Since some lexical lists of Ebla correlate the Sumerian word eme-bala (“interpreter”) with the root ’pl, I suggest it is more appropriate to translate the term āpilum as “interpreter”, “spoksperson” of the God.

When in 1500 the Portuguese commander Pedro Álvares Cabral, headed for India, landed at an uncharted coast in the South-western Atlantic, he and his crew claimed the land for the Portuguese king, Manuel I, and named it after the Holy Cross consecrating all with a mass. Bid by Cabral, the ship’s scribe Pero Vaz de Caminha wrote a letter to the king announcing and describing their find and all their actions. The letter narrated the temperate weather, the abundance of trees and water, and also the possible existence of gold and silver. The soil was so rich that anything one tried to plant would most certainly flourish, he said. Caminha depicted the reddish-brown-skinned natives as innocent in their nudity, and wrote of their women showing their beautiful bodies as if they were unaware of the original sin. The resemblance to Edenic motifs and locus amoenus topoi is evident, as is the overlapping between Christian faith and the royal maritime enterprise. Decades later, the Land of Holy Cross, to the dismay of some men of letters and of the cloth, had its name changed to Brazil, partially after the brazilwood tree (‘Pau-Brasil’) which produced red dye and was the first significant Portuguese American commodity. Authors like João de Barros, in 1554, saw in the naming a refusal to pursue an evident divine election and denounced it as the victory of mercantile and sinful actions over Christian mission. As such, the alteration to the new name denied the important role that the Portuguese kingdom and its new possession ought to take in God's plan. A few years before the arrival of the Portuguese ship on the shores of future Brazil, Christopher Columbus found a land that he initially thought to be the Far East. The first and final destination of his endeavour supported by the Catholic kings of Spain, Columbus was trying to find a route to the East, as an alternative to that cut off by the fall of Constantinople, captured by the Ottomans. But when he realised that he was in an unheard of country of unknown peoples, he started to draw a prophetical plan based on pseudo-Joachimite writings in which the navigation and conquest of a New World would play a decisive part.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo se recurrió al universo profético apocalíptico para interpretar los acontecimientos del convulso período 1793-1825. Para ello, se han trabajado fundamentalmente obras de inspiración profética y prensa de la época. Al poner en diálogo estas fuentes con los acontecimientos que interpretaban hemos buscado recuperar la historicidad de estos documentos, observar las nuevas formas y medios con los que se expresa el discurso profético y destacar su importancia para comprender cómo fueron percibidos los cambios políticos y culturales. The prophet, alchemist, and physician Anselmo Castelo Branco, while not an unknown name in Portuguese letters, still stands as a largely misunderstood author of the intellectually troubled Portuguese eighteenth century. He is mostly known for his alchemical opus, the Ennoea, and so far scholars have only given superficial attention to his non-alchemical works, leading to significant bias. While not denying Castelo Branco's relevance as a medical and alchemical writer, this article hopes to be the first to offer a detailed reconstruction of this author's biography as well as an extensive analysis of all his known written works. Besides his known contributions to the sciences, his ideas on the Portuguese messianic cult of Sebastianism, prognostication, and the definition of accurate prophecy are analyzed, revealing a complex and nuanced vision which aimed to harmonize the fragmented fields of Portuguese eighteenth-century messianism and millenarianism.

Dans les années 1960, parmi les Banda de Centrafrique se produisit une exceptionnelle effervescence anti-fétichiste. Un homme appelé Ngoutidé (« eau froide ») guérit d’une longue maladie et s’adonna à une vaste oeuvre de destruction des objets cultuels et des camps d’initiation des anciennes associations fermées banda. Il prêcha la conversion au catholicisme. Depuis plus de quarante ans, la population banda répète le récit de la vie et de la prédication de Ngoutidé, en glorifiant rétrospectivement sa mission d’évangélisation et de destruction des fétiches. Après avoir reconstruit la trajectoire biographique de Ngoutidé — à partir de recherches d’archive et d’entretiens enregistrés en Centrafrique —, nous nous arrêterons sur les ambivalences et les contradictions de cette figure prophétique, ainsi qu’elles émergent dans les récits sur sa vie diffusés en Centrafrique.

Ngoutidé “the Enlightened One of Lioua”. Destruction of Fetishes and Representations of Witchcraft in the Central African Republic. — In the 1960s there was an important anti-fetishist movement among the Banda of the Central African Republic. A man called Ngoutidé (“fresh water”), after recovering from a long illness, dedicated himself to destroying objects of worship and the places of the ancient initiation societies of the Banda. Ngoutidé preached in the name of the catholic faith. For more than forty years now, the Banda population has been continuing to repeat the story of the life and preaching of Ngoutidé, retrospectively praising his mission to evangelize and destroy fetishes. After reconstructing Ngoutidé’s biography, starting from research in the archives and interviews carried out in the Central African Republic, this essay dwells on the ambivalences and contradictions of this prophetic figure, as he is described now in the Central African Republic.

Se si è conosciuto il Newman "politico-ecclesiale" attraverso il suo scritto tardo della "Lettera al Duca di Norfolk", finora non si è dedicato ampio spazio all'ermeneutica della carica di pontefice che l'allora anglicano John Henry Newman avesse. La tesi ripercorre l'evoluzione, impostata sull'autobiografia nota come "Apologia pro vita sua", dei pensieri, dei riscontri, delle opinioni che il giovane Newman ebbe della figura del papa, in un'Inghilterra profondamente dominata ancora dall'idea del "popish plot" e dall'imperialismo romano-cattolico sulle "libertà" della "vera" Chiesa, quella anglicana.

Voici la parole adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Éternel, la dixième année du règne de Sédécias sur Juda, qui était aussi la dix-huitième année du règne de Nebucadnetsar. L'armée du roi de Babylone faisait alors le siège de Jérusalem et le prophète Jérémie était enfermé dans la cour de la prison qui se trouvait dans le palais du roi de Juda. Sédécias, roi de Juda, l'avait fait enfermer en lui adressant ce reproche : « Pourquoi prophétises-tu comme tu le fais ? En effet, tu affirmes : "Voici ce que dit l'Éternel : Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains du roi de Babylone et il s'en emparera. Sédécias, roi de Juda, n'échappera pas aux Babyloniens, mais il est certain qu'il sera livré ent re les mains du roi de Babylone, il devra lui parler en face et le voir de ses yeux. Nebucadnetsar emmènera Sédécias à Babylone où il restera jusqu'à ce que je m'occupe de lui, déclare l'Éternel. Si vous combattez les Babyloniens, vous n'aurez aucun succès." » Jérémie dit : « Voici la parole que l'Éternel m'a adressée : "Hanameel, le fils de ton oncle Shallum, va venir te trouver pour te demander d'acheter son champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, car tu as un droit de rachat pour l'acquérir." Effectivement, Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, est venu me trouver dans la cour de la prison, conformément à la parole de l'Éternel, et m'a dit : "Je t'en prie, achète mon champ qui se trouve à Anathoth, dans le pays de Benjamin, car tu as un droit d'héritage et de rachat. Achète-le donc !" J'ai alors su que c'était bien une parole de l'Éternel. J'ai donc acheté le champ de Hanameel, le fils de mon oncle, qui est à Anathoth, et je lui ai pesé l'argent, soit 17 pièces d'argent. [...] « Après avoir remis le contrat de vente à Baruc, fils de Nérija, j'ai adressé cette prière à l'Éternel : "Ah ! Seigneur Éternel, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre par ta grande puissance et ta force. Rien n'est trop difficile pour toi. Tu fais preuve de bonté jusqu'à la millième génération et tu fais payer la faute des pères à leurs enfants après eux. Tu es le Dieu grand et puissant qui as pour nom l'Éternel, le maître de l'univers. Tu es un excellent conseiller, généreux dans ton activité, toi qui examines toutes les voies des hu mains pour traiter chacun conformément à sa conduite, en fonction de ses agissements. […] « Cependant, ils [les Judéens] n'ont pas écouté ce que tu leur disais, ils n'ont pas respecté ta loi, ils n'ont pas fait tout ce que tu leur avais ordonné de faire. C'est alors que tu as fait fondre sur eux tous ces malheurs : voici qu'on construit des remblais contre la ville pour s'en emparer, Jérusalem est livrée aux Babyloniens qui l'attaquent, livrée à l'épée, à la famine et à la peste ! Ce que tu as annoncé arrive, et tu le vois bien. Pourtant, Seigneur Éternel, tu m'as ordonné de m'acheter un champ avec de l'argent, de le faire devant témoins, et ce alors que la ville est livrée aux Babyloniens !" » La parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie : « Voici, je suis l'Éternel, le Dieu de toute chair. Y at -il quoi que ce soit de trop difficile pour moi ? « C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Éternel : Je vais livrer cette ville entre les mains des Babyloniens et de Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone ; il s'en emparera. Les Babyloniens qui attaquent cette ville parviendront à y entrer ; ils y mettront le feu et la brûleront, ainsi que les maisons où, sur les toits, ils [les Judéens] ont fait brûler de l'encens en l'honneur de Baal et versé des offrandes liquides en l'honneur d'autres die ux, de sorte qu'ils m'ont irrité. En effet, les Israélites et les Judéens n'ont fait que ce qui est mal à mes yeux, et ce depuis leur jeunesse. Les Israélites n'ont fait que m'irriter par leur manière d'agir, déclare l'Éternel. […] « Et maintenant, voici ce que dit l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, à l'intention de cette ville, que vous présentez comme livrée entre les mains du roi de Babylone, vaincue par l'épée, la famine et la peste : Je vais les rassembler de tous les pays où je les ai chassés en raison de ma colère, ma fureur et ma grande indignation. Je les ramènerai ici et je ferai en sorte qu'ils y habitent en sécurité. Ils seront mon peuple et moi, je serai leur Dieu. Sebastiano del Piombo’s Borgherini Chapel presents some still unsolved problems, starting from its theological sources, that have to be looked for  in two treatises,  the De Arcanis Catholicae Veritatis by Pietro Galatino, and the Commento alle Sentenze di Pietro Lombardo by Egidio da Viterbo, in addition to the Apocalypsis Nova, whose strong ties with the Church of San Pietro in Montorio are  well know. The present draft investigates the relationship between Sebastiano’s paintings and these three textes, while in another paper, shortly to follow, the reasons for such choices will be clarified in the frame of cultural, diplomatic and political relationships between the Holy See and the Spanish Crown, patron of the Church of San Pietro in Montorio

This article examines some of the implications of technological optimism. I first contextualize, historically and culturally (Christopher Nolan's Interstellar [2014] is considered as a particularly salient example), some contemporary variants of techno-optimism in relation to the equally significant contemporary exemplars of techno-pessimism, skepticism and fatalism. I show that this techno-optimism is often instrumentalized in the sense that the optimistic outlook as such is believed to have some influence on the evolving state of affairs. The cogency of this assumption is scrutinized. I argue that in the absence of explicit probabilities, such optimism presupposes some form of retro-causation, where the future is held to somehow have a retroactive effect on the past. This suggests that the underlying mechanism by which techno-optimism is supposed to be instrumental in bringing about the future is fundamentally superstitious. Such superstition, of course, goes against our common understanding of reason and rationality, for adopting rational expectations about the world requires that we avoid the emotional over-determination of our assessments. I show that applied reason is conceptually entangled with this superstitious optimism in the continued successes of technology. The article thus reveals a curious sense in which reason is intrinsically superstitious. I offer an evolutionary explanation for this, showing that the biological origins of reason will by nature tend to produce rational agents which are superstitiously bound to realism and causality, and thus implicitly optimistic about technology's capacity to overcome contingency.

Au milieu des années 1960, en Centrafrique, le pays banda connaît
une formidable effervescence anti-fétichiste. Un jeune homme appelé
Ngoutidé se lance dans une entreprise de destruction ostentatoire d’objets
cultuels et appelle à se convertir au christianisme. Pour les missionnaires
qui en furent les témoins, l’envergure de cette oeuvre iconoclaste évoque
celle d’un « incendie de brousse » brûlant les « fétiches » et les symboles
des anciens cultes initiatiques de la société banda.
Cinquante ans après la retombée du mouvement et la disparition de
son inspirateur, Ngoutidé continue d’être loué comme prophète dans une
région où la précarité et l’insécurité contribuent à réactiver l’imaginaire de
la sorcellerie et la violence des accusations de l’autre mortifère. Pour les
Banda, le danger sorcellaire est l’expression d’une dépossession culturelle
des savoirs et des pouvoirs traditionnels qui permettaient à leurs ancêtres
de composer avec les forces de l’invisible.
Ce discours de la dépossession met en lumière l’ambivalence de la
glorification posthume du « plus grand des Banda », pourtant tenu pour
responsable de l’éradication des coutumes anciennes. Cet ouvrage invite
à comprendre le rôle capital des représentations contemporaines de la sorcellerie
dans la vision que les Centrafricains se font de leur propre histoire
au sein des conflits identitaires actuels.
A partir d’enquêtes ethnographiques menées en Centrafrique et de
matériaux d’archives inédits, cet ouvrage revient sur l’histoire de l’entreprise
missionnaire en Afrique équatoriale et illustre, à la lumière de la
trajectoire de mouvements prophétiques de la région, les changements
intervenus dans les représentations de la sorcellerie, des débuts de la rencontre
coloniale à l’insécurité et à la violence qui règnent aujourd’hui en
Centrafrique.

Sin ignorar su porte científico, este artículo emprende una revisión crítica de las obras «clási-cas» sobre el llamado «profetismo tupi-guaraní», resituando a los autores en los contextos intelec-tuales que determinaron sus preocupaciones científicas y sus metodologías. Desvelando los funda-mentos del «discurso de autoridad» establecido por el cruce forzoso de fuentes históricas e infor-maciones etnográficas, la autora muestra que las grandes líneas interpretativas dependen menos de evidencias documentales que de posiciones teórico-metodológicas características de cada es-cuela antropológica. Com a publicação do ensaio de Nimuendajú sobre os Mitos da Criação e da Destruição do Mundo na religião dos Apapocuva-Guarani, em 1914 1 , entram na literatura etnológica o tema da Terra sem Mal, o da migração profética e, mais em geral, o que foi chamado de «cataclismologia» guarani: uma cosmologia-escatologia que prevê para um futuro mais ou menos próximo um cataclismo cósmico do qual, porém, é possível escapar alcançando em vida —assim como narra o mito do xamã Guyraypoty— o Paraíso. Desde então, o discurso «religioso», o «misticismo», o «pessimismo» como fundamento da filosofia da história tupi-guarani, se tornaram alguns entre os assuntos favoritos da investigação etnológica. Nas páginas seguintes tentarei analisar os trabalhos antropológicos sobre o te-ma, remetendo-os aos contextos intelectuais em que foram produzidos, contextos que determinaram preocupações científicas e abordagens metodológicas, bem co-mo conclusões explicativas. Da confusão à ironia. Expectativas e legados da pide em Angola. Neste artigo pretendo descrever alguns exemplos de dialéticas de repressão e resistência entre a pide e outras auto- ridades policiais em Angola e um movimento religioso autóc- tone, a conhecida “Igreja Tocoista”, entre as décadas de 1950 e 1970. Em primeiro lugar descrevem-se as motivações, receios e expectativas dos agentes da pide, contrapostos com as reações dos líderes e seguidores desta igreja que foram objeto das cam- panhas de “securitização” da colónia. Em segundo lugar, traça- -se um retrato do legado da memória que ficou no seio deste movimento, em particular na Angola contemporânea. Como procurarei demonstrar, a experiência de repressão colonial deu lugar, no seio deste movimento, a uma “história de sofrimento” que hoje se repercute numa narrativa de resiliência e reafirma- ção particular de angolanidade, frequentemente marcada por reversões e ironias.

From confusion to irony. Expectations and legacies of the pide in Angola. In this article I propose to describe some examples of dialectics of repression and resistance between the pide and other police authorities in Angola, and an indigenous religious movement, the “Tokoist Church” between the 1950s and 1970s. Firstly, I describe the motivations, fears and expec- tations of the agents of the pide, contrasted with the reactions of leaders and followers of this church who were subject to the campaigns of “securitization” of the colony. And secondly, I will portrait the legacy of the memory that emerged within this movement in contemporary Angola, in which the experi- ence of colonial repression produced a “history of suffering” that reverberates today through narratives of resilience and the particular reaffirmation of an “Angolan-ness” that was often marked by reversals and ironies.
