تعد ضواحي مدينة تونس، ونخص بالذكر الضاحية الشمالية، ومنذ الفترة الحفصية وإلى حدود أواخر العهد العثماني مكان تنزّه الملوك وراحتهم. ولا يزال عدد كبير من الأبراج والقصور والسرايات التي شيّدت خلال فترات تاريخية مختلفة قائما إلى اليوم. وهي تعكس جليا تطوّر ملامح وخصائص هذه العمائر الفريدة والفاخرة. ولقد لعبت هذه المباني دورا محوريا في تعمير الضواحي والارتقاء بوظائفها وتطوير مجالها المستغل معماريا واقتصاديا، وتدعيم بنيتها الأساسية. ولقد استغرق هذا التطوّر المجالي وخاصة العمراني قرونا قضتها الضواحي في مراوحة عسيرة بين الظهور والضمور. وكانت إعادة بنائها تنطلق في كل مرة بصفة خاصة من مقرّات النزهة. فباستقرار الحكام بها تصبح الضاحية محط اهتمام رجال السلطة والمقربين منهم وعامة الناس. فتتكاثف حركة إنشاء المباني واتخاذ المرافق المختلفة من سواني وبساتين، مما يجعل منها مشروع سلطوي بالدرجة الأولى. لكن الجدير بالذكر أن طول المراوحة وبقاء الضواحي مدة طويلة خالية ومهجورة لا ينفي تجذّر ظاهرة السكن والعمران في هذه المناطق والتي تعود إلى فترات قديمة جدا. ولا تعدو فترات الانتكاس - رغم طول مدتها- أن تكون استطرادا كبيرا في مسيرة التعمير الطويلة التي ستستقر وتكتمل في آخر العهد الحسيني. واستئناف عمليات النمو العمراني وإعادة نسجها من جديد يعود غالبا لاهتمام السلطة الرسمية بهذه المجالات.
ولقد ظهرت عمارة الأبراج المخصّصة للنزهة منذ بداية الفترة  الحفصية وفق تصميم يستجيب لعدة رغبات ويتلاءم مع استعمالات متباينة، ومؤثرات خاصة بتلك الفترة استمدت ملامحها من تواجد وتظافر خبرات مختلفة محلية وأجنبية. وقد شهدت هذه العمارة تطوّرا كبيرا منذ ظهورها وإلى حدود القرن الثامن عشر حيث تمّ بناء أهم هذه المعالم على الإطلاق من حيث التصميم ووفرة مواد البناء المستعملة وتنوعها، واتساع وتعدد فضاءات المعلم الواحد. وتعود أغلب الشواهد الباقية إلى الآن إلى القرن التاسع عشر وهي تمثل من حيث التصاميم والأنماط المعمارية نقلة نوعية في مجال البناء سوف تنعكس على الحركة التعميرية بضواحي مدينة تونس عموما والضاحية الشمالية بصفة خاصة.
وسنحاول خلال هذا العمل تقصّي زمن ظهور عمارة الأبراج والقصور بضواحي مدينة تونس وتتبع تفاصيل تطور الأنماط المعمارية المعتمدة خلال القرن التاسع عشر.

Le village de Hammam-Lif est situé sur des sources thermales, à 16 kilomètre de la ville de Tunis. L'intérêt pour les eaux thermales, la montagne et la mer ainsi que la mise en valeur de ces ressources ont été rythmés par des chronologies différentes. Dès le milieu du XVIII e siècle les séjours curatifs, à Hammam-Lif, s'inscrivent dans le coutumier de la cour beylicale de Tunis. En 1747, un premier pavillon est édifié auprès des sources minérales, afin d'assurer convenablement les services des eaux, pour la famille beylicale. Il est remplacé en 1828, par un établissement thermal monumental, comprenant deux parties : l'aile dédiée à la cour beylicale et le caravansérail pour l'usage du public. Ainsi, le thermalisme est désormais l'activité dominante, de la région de Hammam-Lif. En 1883, un nouvel établissement thermal en style néo-mauresque, El-Hammam Es-Souri, est mis en chantier, à proximité de la villégiature beylicale. Aussitôt, de nombreuses constructions sont venues compléter l'ensemble existant et la ville d'eau prend naissance, pour offrir aux curistes, non seulement les meilleures conditions de soins mais, également, celles d'un séjour réussi. Cette étude de ces deux établissements thermaux nous permet de mieux apprécier les thèmes architecturaux et l'évolution de l'architecture thermale à Tunis au XVIII e et au XIX e siècle. Pour ce faire une documentation variée est mise en oeuvre.

Vers la fin du XIXe siècle, le contexte, les conditions, les aspects et les enjeux de l’urbanisation en Tunisie se sont profondément transformés.  L'introduction d'un nouveau droit foncier, la modification de la structure de l'aménagement de l'espace et le changement de la forme de l'habitat, se traduisent par l’émergence d'une nouvelle trame urbaine dans les régions rurales touchées par une intense colonisation agricole : les centres coloniaux. Ce changement a engendré une modification sérieuse, sinon radicale, du paysage rural. Cette mutation est plus perceptible dans les zones où la grande propriété domine. Ce phénomène bien qu'étant un facteur d'expansion urbaine pour la ville de Tunis ne visait pas les objectifs de développement urbain mais plutôt la délimitation d'un espace colonial pour le contrôle du territoire.
Dans cette étude, nous proposons un aperçu des transformations opérées au milieu rural limitrophe de la ville de Tunis sous les effets de la colonisation. Ainsi, henchir Bordj El-Amri paraît être un territoire tout à fait approprié pour l'analyse des processus de renouvellement des espaces urbains à l'occasion des changements de souveraineté.

Arguably Tunis’s premier public space, the iconic Avenue Bourguiba is today the product of over 150 years of manipulation, regulation and interpretation. Its development can be seen as an early example of thematic place branding, thereby complicating the notion that the widespread phenomenon is an exclusively postmodern and western one. In identifying three potential place-brand labels, this article considers the establishment of the ‘Parisian Colonial’ Avenue by French colonial authorities, its ‘Tunisian Modern’ modification at independence, and its more recent historicist ‘Parisian Global’ refurbishment within the contexts of colonialism, authoritarian governance and globalization. On the eve of the January 2011 revolution, the space reinforced the Ben Ali regime’s maintenance of control and capitalized on the long-since entrenched image of a dual – eastern and western, traditional and modern – postcolonial city. In the revolution’s wake the Avenue has become a reinvigorated public forum with a more complex character. Indeed, while the Avenue’s existing form and function remain emblematic of Tunis’s hybrid postcolonial identity, the thoroughfare now exemplifies the ongoing ‘Arab Spring’. Its cultural brandscape and heritage content, though enhanced with new aspects of democratic empowerment, are likely to endure as the transitioning country continues to participate in the process of globalization.

The TGM (Tunis-Goulette-Marsa) is a railway line which connects Tunis with Marsa while passing by Goulette. The first electrified suburban line of the African continent, bears officially the name of TGM since 1905, date of the inauguration of the first direct layout through the Tunis Lake. In fact well the TGM was at the origin of the Tunis extension of towards north creating in sea front, the most attractive suburbs of the capital. We propose to put the projector on this railway line characteristics and the architectural specificities of its stations, in an historical and contemporary aiming, in order to direct the Tunisian urban developers towards the interests of the railway heritage and to feed the current reflexion on Tunisian urban space and the rail-bound transports. Ancien endroit de villégiature royale et de plaisance, la banlieue de Tunis a connu, au cours de son histoire, plusieurs phases de développement qui correspondent aux différents règnes et aux différentes manières de concevoir le rapport entre la ville et ses environs. Durant une longue période, cette zone était caractérisée par l’existence de splendides jardins et de palais majestueux. Princes, Beys, ministres et hauts fonctionnaires y construisaient des burj-s et des palais assez vastes dans divers styles qui indiquent une évolution architecturale remarquable. cette banlieue garde, encore, un nombre assez important de demeures beylicales. ces résidences s’échelonnaient, en particulier, le long de la mer, ce qui a donné́ à la localité́ des environs nord une ampleur différenciant affirmée par leurs vues panoramiques et emplacements stratégiques.

Bordj Yusuf Dey in el-Bathan: the Ottoman influence in the architecture of resorts around Tunis in the seventeenth century Towards the end of the sixteenth century, the Turks seized the Regency of Tunis and restored prosperity and security. Thus, a stage of reconstruction and embellishment of the city of Tunis and its surroundings begins. At the beginning of the 17th century, the reception of Andalusian refugees in Tunisia still contributed to the enrichment of the capital and its countryside where they were divided. As a result, Yusuf dey (1610-1637) proved to be a great builder and was responsible for the construction of several civil and religious monuments. In the same way he built a remarkable Bordj adjoining to the Andalusian dam of el-Bathan near Jedeida. This Bordj marks an important step in the transformation of architecture where the new influences were mixed with local elements and formed a unique architectural model. This is an excellent witness to the evolution of domestic architecture and to the various Ottoman artistic influences that have contributed to the transformation of domestic architecture in Tunis.

Ce texte est extrait d'un ouvrage conçu comme contribution à l'étude d'un équipement à l'histoire peu connue et à l'empreinte urbaine importante, les Fondouks de Tunis. Témoins oubliés d'une tradition d'accueil et d'échanges entre contrées et cultures fort différentes, ces édifices aujourd'hui délaissés nous renseignent, de par leur localisation dans la médina et la typologie architecturale adoptée, sur les contextes politiques, économiques et sociaux étant à l'origine de leur apparition et du choix de leur emplacement dans les différentes parties de la ville. Partant du cas de la médina de Tunis, nous proposons une lecture synthétique permettant de restituer leur nomenclature en types et en familles ainsi que d'évoquer les problématiques contemporaines de leur conservation et de leur réaffectation fonctionnelle.

Divers matériaux de décor rentrent dans l'ornementation des constructions au XIX e siècle. Les carreaux de faïence figurent parmi les éléments les plus marqués 1. En effet, cet élément de décor a revêtu une importance considérable, en particulier, dans les palais beylicaux et les demeures princières. Les carreaux de faïence ont été, toujours, employés comme matériau principal de décoration. Leur choix et leur provenance formaient un choix minutieux ressortant, le plus souvent, directement du bey. Ces résidences conservent des remarquables ensembles décoratifs témoignant de l'histoire de la céramique locale et importée et de son usage dans le décor entre le XVIII e et le XIX e siècle. De ce fait, ces monuments fournissent un point de référence très important pour l'étude des carreaux de revêtement et de pavage. Toutefois, ces carreaux de faïence architecturale sont l'un des matériaux de la construction qui soulèvent le plus des différentes questions liées à la fabrication, à la provenance, à la datation, aux échanges commerciaux et aux mutations culturelles.

Le présent rapport est relatif à l'étude sur la sécurité urbaine dans la Médina de Tunis, commandée par Dignity (Danish Institute Against Torture). Cette recherche s'appuie sur une enquête qualitative et localisée sur la violence et la sécurité urbaine en choisissant comme terrain d’enquête la Médina de Tunis. Cette enquête a comme finalité l'identification des possibilités de développer, dans un esprit de recherche/action, des initiatives concrètes de travail communautaire en la matière dans ce territoire et des activités participatives impliquant un large éventail d'acteurs locaux en vue d'améliorer les conditions sécuritaires et leur perception. Ainsi, cette étude servira de base au développement d’un projet fondé sur une approche communautaire et participative pour traiter les questions relatives à la sécurité urbaine et aux mécanismes d’évitement, de prise en charge à développer par la suite.

Passer de l'état de servitude à celui de détenteurs de fonctions politiques de premier plan : voilà le destin bien peu commun que connut une famille italienne dans le courant du XIX ème siècle. Une aventure dont nous restent bien sûr des traces postales et épistolaires...

In the last few decades a substantial number of Tunisians have converted to Christianity. This article seeks to better understand their context and Based on two weeks of fieldwork in Tunis in the summer of 2014, this article outlines the history of three of the principal churches in the city—one Catholic, one Anglican, and one Reformed—describes some facets of their worship and spiritual life, and then, based on interviews with church leaders and members, explores key challenges facing the churches. Utilizing the framework of Shoki Coe's contextual theology, the findings are then analyzed in order to better understand the priorities, aspirations and ministry strategies of the local churches.

Carthage and Controversial Child Sacrifice Theories.
Although a reputed sacrifice–theory about Carthaginian mothers who killed themselves and their children rather than be subjected to the rapes and tortures of the Roman army, significant controversy perseveres. Goodison examines sacrifice theories during the Palace or Temple Stage of the neighboring Crete civilization that was recorded around 1000 years later and therefore supports further questions and concerns. * Birnbaum discusses Tanit relative to Tophet gravesites, followed by Pomeroy’s re–views of infanticide and the reminder that “no known society positively prefers girl babies to boys.” (IHC: 208.) More recently are the significant discoveries and skeletal analysis by Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz. Listed among 21st–century scholars of Child Sacrifice theories are Physical Anthropologist Dr. Schwartz and his extensive team. Their recent findings refute earlier sacrifice narratives supported by extensive evidence that Carthaginian infant mortality rates are consistent with present–day statistics. Their findings also argue that the infants buried in the Tophet cemeteries died as a result of prenatal complications and fetal deaths–or–pandemic diseases including dire sanitary conditions.

لا شك في أن إحداث سانية باردو وارتياد السلاطين الحفصيين لها كانت حلقة مفصلية في التحوّل التاريخي الذي عرفته هذه الجهة. كما كان لذلك أثر في تحديد نوعية العمران وطريقة التعمير ووسائلها. ولم يخلد ذكر قصر منذ ذلك التاريخ كما خلد قصر باردو. فقد عرّج عليه أغلب المؤرخين والموثقين ووصفه جلّ الرحالة الذين زاروا البلاد وصفا فاق كل ما ورد في باقي القصور. ولا يزال هذا القصر المنيف قائما إلى اليوم وتشهد بعض أبنيته عماّ ورد في تصنيفاتهم.
وقد اتجه اهتمامنا إلى إعادة دراسة قصور باردو وناحيتها بعد أن أبانت الوثائق والأرشيفات المحلية والأجنبية معطيات جديدة لم تتعرّض لها الدراسات السابقة. كما كانت رغبتنا في المضيّ قدما في محاولة سبر أغوار مجال مهمّ من التاريخ العقاري والعمراني لم يقع تناوله من قبل. وبتوفر قرائن تسمح في استعادة هذه الدراسة والخوض فيها من جديد. وتتمثل في مادة مصدرية هامة تستعمل لأول مرة لدراسة هذه الجهة. نرنو من خلالها إلى محاولة استرجاع تصوّر المشهد التعميري للجهة وتوزّع وحداته الأساسية. كما نروم من خلالها استجلاء الجوانب المعمارية لقصر باردو وناحيته.
ولا يخلو اختيارنا لهذا الموضوع من اعتبارات أخرى. فلم تطرق الجهة وقصورها بصورة دقيقة وشاملة. ولا تزال معارفنا الخاصة بها تقتصر على بعض الدراسات التاريخية بالأساس في حين اقتصرت المعمارية منها على دراسة الشواهد الباقية دون المضيّ قدما في استجلاء مكوّناتها. ولا ينفي ذلك قيمتها بل بالعكس يؤكدها باعتبارها اللبنة الأولى لدراسة جزء هام من المجال الضاحوي لمدينة تونس الذي تحوّل إلى دار للملك ومركزا استراتيجيا للحكم على امتداد قرون متتالية.
كما يتأتّى اختيارنا لقصر باردو من تفرّده عن بقية القصور الأخرى بوظيفته الإدارية الرئيسية وبعده السلطوي وشحنته الرمزية. فقد شمل بدوره بعدين أولهما مركزي إداري لاحتوائه على دواوين الحكم والقضاء، وثانيهما ريفي استراتيجي فالجهة برمتها تعتبر حلقة وصل لا يمكن تفاديها تربط مدينة تونس بنواحيها الشمالية الشرقية والشمالية الغربية. كما تعد من بين أهمّ المزدرعات وأقربها في تزويد مدينة تونس بما توفره السواني من منتجات مختلفة. ويضاف إلى كل ذلك أن قصورها تجمع بين صفتين أساسيتين فهي تؤمن وظيفة سكنية دائمة وتوفّر كل مرافق الرفاهة الموجودة بقصور الراحة الموسمية.
وما حثّنا أيضا تعرّض سواني جهة باردو وأغلب قصورها إلى التلاشي والاندثار الناتج عن طبيعة تحوّل أحيازها من مجال ريفي ذي نشاط زراعي إلى مجال عمراني ذي قيمة عقارية مضافة في تزايد مستمر، وهو ما يحتم دراستها وتوثيقها قصد إثراء مدوّنة الأحواز الخاصة بالفترة الحديثة. فانصبت جهودنا في البداية على استطلاع تواصل التعمير بالجهة منذ ظهورها خلال الفترة الحفصية بمقارعة النصوص المصدرية والوثائق الأرشيفية بالواقع الميداني الأثري.  وعمدنا إلى إعادة تشكيل مورفولوجيا المشهد التعميري بها من منطلق أن إنشاء مراكز عمرانية تتطلّب التشكل لتأقلم وفق المعطيات الطبيعية التي تندرج ضمنها. فتتبعنا توزّع مجموعة السواني التي تؤلفها. وتعقّبنا مختلف التحولات العقارية والعمرانية التي عرفتها.  وقد تمكنّا في هذا الصدد من تقديم معطيات تجيب على الكثير من الأسئلة المطروحة. وتعدّ بعض النتائج التي توصلنا إليه من قبيل الاكتشاف. فقد تمكنّا من تحديد موقع الجابية الحفصية التي ذكرها ابن عبد الباسط. كما حددنا سانية المالقي بكل دقة.
وقد أحالتنا خصوصية المجال على إشكاليات عدة تتمثل في التساؤل عن مدى التواصل التعميري بالمنطقة عبر الحقبات التاريخية وعلاقته بقصر الحكم ومدى تأثيره فيه. ويطرح أيضا تساؤل عن علاقته بالمدينة المركز تونس من جهة وببقية الأحواز من جهة أخرى، باعتبار أن جهة باردو تمثل بداية الحزام الغربي لمدينة تونس وتشكّل ممرا ضروريا لأهم الطرق التي تربط مدينة تونس بأهم مدن الشمال والشمال الغربي.
وأحالنا ذلك بدوره على تساؤل يتعلّق بنسق تطور المعمار بقصور باردو بمختلف مكوناته المعمارية. فقد زخرت الجهة بعدة قصور عكست جانب من تطوّر فنون العمارة في نطاق تمازج ثقافي وفني. فقد سعى القائمون عليها لخلق تناسق يتجاوب مع توزيع السانية والعناصر الطبيعية.
ويتوزع هذا البحث على قسمين محوريين. أبرزنا في القسم الأول الجوانب التاريخية للمنطقة وذلك من خلال مقارنة استنتاجات الواقع الميداني بما توفره المصادر ووثائق الأرشيف. وكان ذلك بالتطرق وتبيّن إشكالية الامتداد والحدود والوضعية العقارية التي عرفتها المنطقة مع إبراز جوانب من أشكال التعمير والعمران البشري ودورها في تشكيل الوضعية العقارية الخاصة بجهة باردو.  كما عرّجنا على الخاصيات الطبيعية لجهة باردو لما لها من أهمية في التشكل العمراني والمعماري، إضافة إلى ما قد تساهم به شبكة المسالك في خلق خريطة خاصة بالمنطقة تخص التوزع المجالي للسواني والقصور. وهوما ساعد على تصوّر المشاهد التعميرية المتلاحقة واسترجاع مختلف طبقاتها التراتبية. وحرصنا في تناولنا التاريخي في هذا المستوى على تقديم صورة لتطور المشهد التعميري منذ الفترة الحفصية وإلى موفي الفترة الحسينية لاقتناعنا بضرورة الربط بين مختلف الفترات لعلاقة الموروث التعميري عبر الحقبات التاريخية وتأثيره على تحديد الطراز المعماري بالجهة. وأوصلنا ذلك إلى جرد أولي للسواني بالجهة سواء على المستوى الكمي أو النوعي وذلك فيما يخص السواني المندثرة أو التي تعذّر تحديد موقعها إلى هذه اللحظة مع التركيز على كيفية توزعها بالمجال. وأرفقناه بأمثلة مساحية تنشر لأول مرة. واتبعنا في ذلك تمشي يعتمد أساسا على استقراء الخرائط القديمة وإعادة تركيب الأمثلة الموضعية لمختلف السواني مع اعتبار مساحتها. وأتاح لنا ذلك بكثير من الجهد والتعقيد تجميع ملامح وعناصر المنظومة العمرانية لحقبة تاريخية كاملة بأدق تفاصيلها ورصد حيثيات تطوّرها.  وركناّ إلى ذلك لاصطدامنا بعوائق جمة مرتبطة أساسا بطبيعة مجال جهة باردو الذي فقد صفته الريفية منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين. وهو ما طمس المشهد الأصلي تماما.
وأفردنا القسم الثاني من هذا البحث لدراسة قصور الجهة.  وقد بوّبت حسب تسلسلها الزمني. ويصحب كل مثال دراسة تاريخية ومعمارية بمختلف أصنافها من الناحية التخطيطية، الإنشائية والزخرفية والغاية من ذلك تبيّن نسق تطورها عبر الحقبات التاريخية.  ولجأنا في أغلب الحالات المدروسة لمقارعة الأثر المادي لهذه القصور بما توفر حولها من إشارات تاريخية ضافية. وأفادنا ذلك في معرفة نسق وشكل التطوّر الذي عرفته قصور باردو. كما أفادنا في تقصّي خصوصيات العمارة السكنية الرسمية ومدى تأثّر الطراز الرسمي والريفي الذي كان منطلق البناء. كما تطرّقنا أيضا إلى التحوّلات الوظيفية التي عرفتها بعض هذه القصور خلال الفترة الاستعمارية والتعرّض لمختلف التحويرات التي أدخلت عليها.

Quiconque visite Tunis est surpris par l'absence d'étendards, pavillons, écussons, et autres insignes arborés sur des édifices qui devenaient par la même des chancelleries, des consulats et, plus récemment dans l'histoire tunisienne, des ambassades à part entière. ces symboles de souveraineté, qui parent d'ordinaire les capitales des Etats, animaient pourtant il y a peu de temps encore nos rues, rappelant que la belle et fière Tunis fut, de tous temps, un théâtre de la diplomatie méditerranéenne...

Ayant commencé avec le début du XIXe siècle, l’immigration italienne en Tunisie s’est maintenue jusqu’au début du XXe siècle. Elle a été le fait d’initiatives individuelles et a profité du pays récemment colonisé. D’abord limitée aux ouvriers destinés aux mines et au secteur du bâtiment, cette immigration, voulue par les autorités coloniales, s’est rapidement étendue, pour concerner quelques milliers de paysans indispensables à la mise en valeur de la terre. Cette immigration a été très significative, aussi, en termes de mutation urbaine. La succession de plusieurs vagues d’immigrés italiens a, rapidement, débouché sur l’intensification du phénomène de périurbanisation. Plusieurs recherches se sont intéressées à certains aspects de l’installation de ces immigrés dans des quartiers précis de Tunis ou de ses environs. Toutefois, les éléments liés à la dimension périurbaine et rurale de leur implantation demeurent largement inexplorés. A cet égard, nous observons une concentration souvent accentuée de ces immigrants dans le milieu périurbain et rural. Nous percevons des lieux d’attraction qui prouvent que ce groupe existe, grâce notamment au réseau communautaire fort. La constitution de lieux de rassemblement correspondait à un ancrage spatial et symbolique avec des éléments distincts. D’une immigration temporaire et limitée le mouvement allait prendre progressivement le caractère d’une immigration d’installation définitive avec la fondation de plusieurs regroupements et centres coloniaux.
Ya-t-il des confinements de ces immigrants italiens dans certaines régions de Tunis ? A quels facteurs les différentes localisations peuvent-elles être rattachées ? Peut-on lire dans l'espace périurbain les marques des immigrants italiens ?
En cherchant à répondre à ces questions, le cas de henchir el-Mahrine est, à ce titre, très éclairant pour saisir les mécanismes de mutation périurbaine tout autour de Tunis et le rôle distingué des immigrants italiens dans ce phénomène. A cet égard, notre propos est structuré en deux parties. D’abord, nous nous intéresserons à l’importance du fait migratoire dans l’évolution démographique du milieu périphérique. Quel est son importance dans le renouveau des espaces ruraux ? Ensuite, nous revenons sur la dynamique de la structure foncière et urbaine.

In The Mediterranean Incarnate, anthropologist Naor Ben-Yehoyada takes us aboard the Naumachos for a thirty-seven-day voyage in the fishing grounds between Sicily and Tunisia. He also takes us on a historical exploration of the past eighty years to show how the Mediterranean has reemerged as a modern transnational region. From Sicilian poaching in North African territory to the construction of the TransMediterranean gas pipeline, Ben-Yehoyada examines the transformation of political action, imaginaries, and relations in the central Mediterranean while detailing the remarkable bonds that have formed between the Sicilians and Tunisians who live on its waters.
         
The book centers on the town of Mazara del Vallo, located on the southwestern tip of Sicily some ninety nautical miles northeast of the African shore. Ben-Yehoyada intertwines the town’s recent turbulent history—which has been fraught with conflicts over fishing rights, development projects, and how the Mediterranean should figure in Italian politics at large—with deep accounts of life aboard the Naumachos, linking ethnography with historical anthropology and political-economic analysis. Through this sophisticated approach, he crafts a new viewpoint on the historical processes of transnational region formation, one offered by these moving ships as they weave together new social and political constellations.

During Mussolini’s fascist regime, the Atlante internazionale del Touring Club Italiano published in Milan (1927-1938) and too in Barcelona (1930-1935), and widely recognised far beyond the borders of Italy, included among its plates two maps of European ethnic groups. The makers of the TCI’s atlas passed on to us a specific approach to determine the kind of collective that ought to be considered an ethnic group. The enigmatic second reprint of the fifth edition (1938) was inexplicably not accompanied by the symbolic features required by the Italian fascist authorities, but, after World War II started, the new version of the “Europa etnografica” map – on a 1:12.000.000 scale –  clearly showed the changes that occurred in the political context.

Arts are the main human expression encouraging man to expose his practices, ideas, and fears. This in turn affects and shapes his environment, an environment which keeps evolving into cities. Nowadays, human expression through art is playing a major role in the development of the urban landscape by shifting the old-fashioned paradigms of the rigid and static urban structuring and development, especially with the new urban trends floating on the surface. The case study of the Medina of Tunis is a paradigmatic example that illustrates the bottom-up approach of social participation in urban life through art. The research question asked here is to what extent has the artistic practices been influencing the urban development of the city's user experience? Can this be regarded as a necessary tool for the regeneration of the historical urban landscape? First, a general overview of urban development and the influence of the artistic practices have been presented. Issues such as urban transformation are highlighted. The second part exposes specific examples of artistic manifestations influencing public spaces and urban life in the studied example of the Medina of Tunis. The next step is about elaborating the main examples in their context in the form of case studies. The analysis of these case studies directs towards the outcomes and conclusions regarding the impact of artistic practices in changing the way a city is perceived, used and designed.

Reflections on present-day threats regarding the conservation of the built and civic heritage in the UNESCO world heritage site of the medina of Tunis around the case of the destruction of an important historic palace.

Towards the end of 1234, a letter arrived at the papal curia from the Franciscan minister and the Dominican prior residing in Tunis, posing a series of forty questions concerning their ministry to the Catholic community of Tunis--primarily on whether certain sins called for excommunication, or whether they were mortal or venial. The ecumenical councils and pontifical decrees had indeed established the rules in principle, but they had not imagined all the particular cases that these friars encountered in Tunis. Raymond of Penyafort, confessor and penitentiary to Pope Gregory IX, explains that the pope gave his answer to each of these questions and that he, Raymond, wrote them down and sent them to the two friars. Questions and answers are preserved in a text known as the Responsiones ad dubitabilia circa communicationem christianorum cum sarracenis, dated January 19th 1235. Each section contains first a question posed by the friars and then the pope's response, transmitted by Raymond. The questions concern the legality (or not) of a whole series of transactions with Muslims: from selling them nails to secretly baptizing their children. This text offers us precious information on the Latin Christian community of Tunis, which is numerous and diverse. There are merchants: Genoans, Pisans and "Spaniards" (no doubt Catalans). There are clerics: Franciscans and Dominicans, of course, but also the priests from the maritime cities, associated with their funduqs. There are mercenaries, crusaders, converts to Islam, captives, slaves, even persons serving as pawn for loans. This article consists of an introduction to the text, a critical edition of the Latin text, and an English translation.

The present report is on urban securiy in the Medina of Tunis, commissioned by Dignity (Danish Institute against Torture). The research rests on alocal-based qualitative survey on violence
and urban security with the Medina of Tunis as the selected field of investigation. The survey aims at identifying means to develop concrete initiatives of community work in this location and participatory activities involving a wide range of local actors to improve security and its perception, in a research/action context. This study will then serve as the basis for a project based on a community and participatory approach to address issues of urban security and violence and of mechanisms of avoidance and care to develop later.

Les pressions anthropiques grandissantes liées au développement du pays,et, plus spécialement, de Tunis, sa capitale, aboutissent à un effondrement biologique se traduisant par des marées vertes (biomasse primaire représentée essentiellement par la prolifération d’Ulva rigida), des épisodes d’eaux rouges et des crises anoxiques de plus en plus fréquentes et de plus en plus longues. Devant les problèmes environnementaux majeurs (dégagement d'hydrogène sulfuré, mortalité massives de poissons, entre autres...) engendrés par la pollution du lac la décision d’une nécessaire restauration environnementale du lac Nord a été prise par les autorités nationales. La très rapide restauration environnementale des plans d'eau a permis de mettre en évidence la très forte résilience de ces écosystèmes lagunaires.
