Its number is enormous with hidden potentiality and the capacity of becoming the cornerstone for the city of tomorrow. But the existence of urban void in already planned development is alarming. Now a day city grows spontaneously in the developing context to meet the everyday need with acute shortage of amenities. All the development is not possible to be measured under top-down planning process. So, our planned development should be the best within our reach, but that is not the reality. There is many flaws exist in public space planning. Especially found in the planned residential area. Where these are given but not used properly. Such spaces could be unused not only because of their limited functionality but also because of the fact that the public eye does not perceive them at all. The aim of the research is to find the form of the transformation of open space into the urban void in a planned residential area of Khulna through addressing user preferred local Place making process. Based on case study, this study finds that how urban void could be addressed through the lens of place making through in-depth observation & place performance evolution. The upshot is made up of a comprehensive guideline for rethinking Urban Void as a catalyst for ensuring future urban development.

The college town of State College, PA, USA is home to The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and its many facilities. Our initial research interest was to understand the influence of the newly developed Arboretum at Penn State (APSU) on nearby housing values in State College over time. Current sales transaction data were gathered and a pooled cross-sectional regression analysis approach utilized. Contrary to the literature, our findings suggest proximity to APSU, as well as three other nearby open spaces, had no significant influence on nearby homes. Further, proximity to PSU's main campus was negatively associated with housing values. Neither of these patterns varied over time. To further explore these results, the study area was expanded beyond the neighborhoods most prox-imate to APSU to the balance of the borough. These results replicated our earlier findings, confirming that living close to PSU's campus is negatively associated with housing values community-wide. These findings disconfirm the common practical assumption that the State College market places a premium on proximity to the town's major employment center (PSU campus) and a significant local landmark (APSU). Housing markets in similar college towns may not reflect typical residential areas and may require alternative evaluation considerations.

Built environments and public urban spaces are considered an essential topic nowadays in the shadow of pandemic spread. Countries and researchers are working on control urban spaces, thus it is important to redefine characters of these spaces, especially the residential ones, to fulfill stakeholders' needs besides controlling the social distance between them and preventing them from spreading and exchanging pandemics. Therefore, the study will demonstrate the fingerprint of COVID-19 on space's character, and how we can sustain different built residential spaces.

The paper will present the analytical device for analysing the
configurations of open public spaces within public housing
neighbourhoods which is defined in the form of a universally applicable
typology. This typology is based on spatial and sociological theories
about relations between spatial form and social processes. The main
purpose of the typology is to measure the capacity of urban structure
and architecture of the neighbourhoods for supporting the collective
patterns of use of open public spaces.

As the Hong Kong SAR Government embarks on new large-scale development projects in the North-East New Territories and Hung Shui Kiu, the following paper explores the qualities and inherent obstacles in Hong Kong’s urban design and planning approach. The paper is based on the authors’ research on districts in Hong Kong, namely Sai Ying Pun and Tin Shui Wai. It proposes to learn from the merits of Hong Kong’s early districts: their integrated street networks, small blocks, mixed-use typology and active street frontages enhancing connectivity and generating a multitude of social and economic activities. These advantages contrast with the conditions of Hong Kong’s recent new towns, which stifle individual initiatives, restrict microeconomic opportunities, and limit the life experiences of their residents, usually the poorest part of the city’s population. As the paper argues, the understanding of the relationship between urban form and microeconomic opportunities is essential in creating a better quality of living and nurturing sustainable communities in Hong Kong.

Most of the concern in recent years about the quality of life of the residents of large post-war housing estates in Europe has focused on the various socio-economic aspects of the resident populations and the way these aspects impact on their living conditions. It may, however, be argued that the social aspect of the debate has been dominated mainly by issues concerning social mix and the conduct of housing estate residents, while issues concerning social interaction and social cohesion have received much less attention. This paper adopts a different approach and uses the example of public space to address the issue of social interaction in large housing estates. We identify the major characteristics of public space within these residential areas, adopt the notion of ‘social space’, and use empirical examples to explain the importance of proper public space design, management, and maintenance; the meaning of social space to the residents; and its importance in fostering social interaction and social cohesion.

Kamusal alanlar, insanların yaşam kalitesini artıran önemli kentsel çevre unsurlarının başında gelmektedir. Kentsel iç mekân (urban interior) ise; kamusal alanlarda ortaya çıkan, insanlar ile çevreleri arasındaki çok yönlü ilişkinin oluşturduğu, dolayısıyla toplumsal ilişkiler ağına hizmet eden geçici mekânlar olarak tanımlanabilir. İç mekân tasarımı uzun yıllar boyunca her ne kadar yapı ölçeğinde ele alınan bir disiplin olsa da, günümüzde iç mimarlık ile kentsel mekân arasında güçlü bir ilişkinin varlığına odaklanan güncel kentsel tasarım yaklaşımları ön plana çıkmaktadır. Kentsel iç mekânlarda esas olan "geçicilik" ve "yere özgülük" kavramlarıdır. İç mimarlığın kapsadığı alanları genişleten bu yeni kavram ile birlikte; iç mekân tasarım ilkeleri, kent mekânının planlanması ve tasarlanması sürecinde kullanılabilmektedir. İç mimarlık ve kent planlama disiplinleri arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanan bu çalışmada, son dönemde başarılı kamusal alanlar yaratmakta güncel bir yöntem olarak kullanılan placemaking süreci incelenmektedir. Placemaking süreci, kamusal alanların planlanması, tasarımı ve yönetimi için geliştirilen çok yönlü bir yaklaşım olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu yaklaşım, kamusal alanları dönüştürmeyi amaçlayan hem felsefi hem de pratik bir süreçtir. Placemaking sürecinin temelinde yatan kavramlar, 1960'larda Jane Jacobs ve William H. Whyte tarafından ortaya atılan "insan odaklı" şehirler tasarlama konusunda çığır açan fikirler neticesinde ortaya çıkmıştır. Jacobs ve Whyte, "canlı" ve "yaşayan" şehirlerin odak noktasının kaliteli kamusal alanlar yaratmaktan geçtiğini vurgulamaktadır. Project for Public Space (PPS) ise 1975 yılından bu yana kavramı daha kapsayıcı bir hâle getirerek güncel yaklaşımlarla kentlere uygulamayı amaçlamakta ve bu yönde birçok proje gerçekleştirmektedir. Bu çalışmada da, başarılı kamusal alanlar yaratma sürecinde önemli bir yer tutan kentsel iç mekânların tasarımında iç mimarlık disiplininin önemini vurgulamak ve başarılı kentsel iç mekânlar üretme sürecinde kullanılan güncel yaklaşımları  placemaking süreci üzerinden ortaya koymak amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmanın kapsamını, placemaking süreci ile üretilen kentsel iç mekân projeleri oluşturmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, placemaking sürecini güncel kentsel tasarım projelerinin odak noktası hâline getiren ve son yıllarda birçok çalışmaya imza atan Project for Public Space (PPS) Derneği'nin gerçekleştirdiği placemaking projeleri ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Sokak ve caddeler, meydanlar, parklar, kent merkezleri, kamusal yapılar, su kenarları, kamusal pazarlar olmak üzere 7 farklı kategoride gerçekleştirilen projelerden ise "meydanlar"a yönelik yapılan projeler incelenerek çalışmanın sınırları daraltılmıştır. Project for Public Spaces (PPS); insanların, güçlü topluluklar oluşturan kamusal alanlar  yaratmalarına ve bu alanları sürdürülebilir kılmalarına yardımcı olmayı amaçlayan bir sivil toplum kuruluşudur. Derneğin placemaking süreci için tanımladığı adımlar, her yerin kendine ait sorunları ve dinamikleri olduğu için, mekândan mekâna değişiklik göstermektedir. Ancak dernek genel olarak; bir yeri gözlemlemek, planlamak ve şekillendirmek için daha fazla kişinin katılımını sağlamak için beş aşamalı bir süreç kullanır: a) toplumla tanışmak ve paydaşları belirlemek b) alanda vakit geçirmek ve alanın zayıf ve güçlü yanlarını saptamak c) mekân için bir vizyon oluşturmak d) kısa süreli deneylerle uygulamaya başlamak ve ne yapıldığına dair değerlendirmeler ile devam ederek uzun vadeli iyileştirmeleri sağlamak e) mekânı yönetmek, gözlem ve analiz yapmak. Çalışmada placemaking yaklaşımı ile ortaya çıkarılan 37 meydan projesi incelenmiştir. Bu projeler yine Project for Public Space'in tanımladığı başarılı kamusal alan göstergeleri olan 1) erişilebilirlik ve bağlantılar 2) sosyallik 3) konfor ve imaj 4) kullanım ve aktiviteler olmak üzere 4 ana ölçüt çerçevesinde ele alınmıştır. 37 meydanda kullanılan iç mekân tasarım ilkeleri incelenerek, bu ilkelerin başarılı kamusal alan göstergelerinin hangileri kapsamında kullanıldığı incelenmiştir. İncelenen 37 örnek projeye göre, başarılı kentsel iç mekânlar üretme sürecinde iç mekân tasarım ilkeleri özellikle "konfor ve imaj" ile "sosyallik" ölçütlerinin sağlanmasında önemli rol oynamaktadır. Konfor ve imaj ölçütü altında; caziplik-çekicilik, peyzaj öğelerinin kullanımı, malzeme seçimi ve işçilik, bakım ve onarım gibi alt ölçütler, sosyallik ölçütü altında; rekreasyon için uygunluk, kapsayıcılık (çocuk-kadın-yaşlı-engelli kullanımına uygunluğu), mekânın sosyal aktivitelere uygunluğu gibi alt ölçütlerin sağlanmasında büyük oranda iç mimarlık disiplini ve iç mekân tasarım ilkelerinden yararlanıldığı saptanmıştır. Bu ilkeler: ritim, denge, tekrar, hiyerarşi, oran, yakınlık, zıtlık, süreklilik olarak tanımlanabilir. Ayrıca iç mimarlık disiplini için önemli bir yer tutan mekâna uygun mobilyaların tasarlanması süreci de başarılı kentsel iç mekânlar oluşturmada kendini "kentsel mobilya" tasarımı olarak var etmektedir. Yapılan çalışmaya göre daha canlı, yaşanabilir ve kaliteli kentsel mekânlar yaratma sürecinde kullanılan yeni yöntemler ve yeni yaklaşımlar ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bunların güncel bir örneği olan placemaking yaklaşımının aşamaları ve bu yaklaşım ile üretilen mekânların sunduğu verilere göre, iç mimarlık disiplini ve kentsel mekân üretim süreci arasında gittikçe güçlenen bir bağ oluşmakta ve toplulukların yaşadığı mekânların tasarlanması sürecinde gün geçtikçe daha multidisipliner yaklaşımlar ortaya çıkmaya başlamaktadır. Bu çalışma da iç mimarlık ile kent planlama disiplinleri arasında var olan ancak ihmâl edilen güçlü bağa ve iç mimarlık alanındaki güncel yaklaşımlara vurgu yapması açısından önemli görülmektedir.

This work follows a long line of studies and empirical investigations in Space Syntax research, that, in general, try to conceptualise, describe and quantify the relation between physical space and human agency. How many people share public space is known to affect many socioeconomic processes in cities, such as segregation, vitality and local commercial markets. Observing and measuring pedestrian movement through surveys, as well as statistically analysing it have been at the core of diverse investigations not least in the field of Space Syntax, not only a means to validate and measure the dependence of pedestrian movement on spatial configuration, but also as a means to forecast and predict pedestrian flows. However, these studies do not necessarily provide us with comparable, let alone generalisable findings that can lead to generalisable propositions. They remain in most cases specific investigations of particular cities, neighbourhoods or types of areas (e.g. city centres). Another issue, as will be elaborated in this paper, is that the typical statistical methods used, such as multivariate regression models, are not always the optimal or even suitable for modelling pedestrian movement, typically measured in pedestrian counts. This paper aims therefore, to directly address three methodological challenges: first, construction of comparable GIS-models; second, gathering large scale pedestrian data; third, applying advanced statistical modelling suitable for pedestrian data. The ultimate goal is to estimate the impact of spatial form on urban life in a way that is methodologically sound and can provide robust results that can be generalisable, and allows us to speak of the relation between spatial form and pedestrian movement in a way that is not specific to a certain area, or types of areas or streets, or even to a specific city. The results show, first, high and consistent correlations between spatial form and pedestrian movement in a study of unprecedented size that comprises three cities, including a large range of neighbourhoods of varying morphological types, from villa areas to urban cores, and offer convincing proof that the tested morphological variables have a strong impact on the spatial distribution of pedestrian flows in cities. Second, the study shows that the model with all explanatory variables has the highest explanatory power and the best model fit where Angular integration and Accessible FSI are the explanatory variables with the largest effect on pedestrian movement, but others are significantly contributing to the predictive power of the model. Third, the study contributes to the advancement of the statistical modelling that is suitable for the specificities of the data used, proposing the use of a negative Binomial model instead of regression models, most common in the field.
