Quercus) plastome still exhibits large gaps, mostly in respect of detailed phylogeny and information from southern Europe and adjacent Near East. We investigated DNA sequence polymorphism at two plastid loci on 270 individuals representing 13 white oak species/taxa and retrieved several hundred sequences of the same two DNA regions from GenBank to fill the above gaps, and contribute to a better understanding of white oak diversity and evolution. The modern European sect. Quercus species exhibits a poorly differentiated plastid DNA, despite its current highly diversified taxonomy. Twenty-nine haplotypes were identified across the Euro-Mediterranean and Near East regions, including two ancestral variants that are westerly and south-easterly partitioned. Other high- and low-frequency haplotypes also showed a well-structured geographic distribution consistent with the current phytogeographic framework of the European contine...

The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Florist... more The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. The field trip was held in 2019 along the Sillaro, Santerno, and Senio high valleys located in Toscana (central Italy). The flora documented for the studied area amounts to 492 specific and subspecific taxa (including five hybrids), belonging to 254 genera and 77 families. Bromopsis caprina, Ophrys appennina, O. classica, Polygala flavescens subsp. flavescens, and Pulmonaria vallarsae subsp. apennina were the only five Italian endemics found in the study area, whereas 28 alien taxa were detected. Finally, nine taxa (seven native and two alien) have to be considered as new records for the regional flora of Toscana.

The Euganean Hills are a well-known refugee site for thermophilous woody flora in northern Italy.... more The Euganean Hills are a well-known refugee site for thermophilous woody flora in northern Italy. Among the species recorded here, there is Quercus dalechampii. The Euganean Hills are the only northern Italy site where the occurrence of this oak species is considered. The aim of this paper was to verify the presence of Q. dalechampii in the study area and to select possible diagnostic morphological traits that are usable to distinguish it from Q. petraea and Q. pubescens. Forest stands dominated by Q. petraea, Q. pubescens, and the presumed Q. dalechampii were sampled using the phytosociological approach to highlight their ecological features. Leaf and fruit material from 104 oak individuals was analysed from a macro-morphological and micro-morphological point of view. Leaf shape was also analysed using the geometric morphometric approach. All multivariate analysis procedures applied on the matrices of leaf and fruit traits highlighted two main clusters of morphological diversity. O...
