Objective Ocular dryness is a well-recognized adverse side effect of many topical and systemic medications. In psychiatry, patients who have consumed such drugs as lithium carbonate and sodium valproate frequently experience dry eye symptoms. The purpose of this study was to compare tear film stability between patients who use these drugs with those patients who are not on medication. Methods After obtaining informed consent, the tear film break up time (TBUT) test was performed in 96 eyes of 48 subjects. The subjects were placed in to three groups. Participants included two groups of euthymic bipolar disorder patients (16 cases each) with history of pharmacotherapy for more than two years. Patients in each group were taking only one type of mood stabilizer (lithium carbonate or sodium valproate). In addition,16 age-matched bipolar patients who did not take any topical or systemic medications were included in a control group. Values of TBUT were compared between the three groups usi...

Introduction Previous researches have shown that anxiety symptoms are negatively associated with measures of intelligence. However, recent findings indicate possible positive relationships between Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD) and intelligence. Also, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is associated with a moderate degree of underperformance on cognitive tests, including deficient processing. There are inconsistent results to present the relationship between Major Depression Disorder (MDD) and IQ. The present study has three main aims. The first aim of this study is to investigate the difference between IQ in individuals with GAD, OCD and major depressive disorder, and normal group. The second purpose is to perform a comparative study between the GAD, OCD and MDD groups on verbal and non-verbal intelligence. The third aim of this study is to examine the relationships between GAD, OCD and MDD as well as their underlying cognitive processes, including worry, rumination, and post...

Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal (GI) disorders seen by primary care physician and gastroenterologist. Gender-specific prevalence rates for IBS are approximately two female to one male in most studies, and all population based. It is commonly accepted that IBS seems to be influenced by psychosocial stressors and affective factors, whose role may contribute to the predisposition, precipitation and perpetuation of IBS symptoms, affecting also the clinical outcome. Methods: Forty-five patients with irritable bowel syndrome (5males, 40 females) and 50 healthy volunteers from the community (7males, 43females) matched for age, level of education and social-status were enrolled. After an examination by a gastroenterologist and a total colonoscopy, all IBS subjects evaluated with clinical interview conducted by psychiatrist. All the subjects were administered the STAXI- 2 and DASS 21 tests. Results: Participants included 45(47%) IBS pat...

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with heterogeneous expression affecting quality of life. The incidence of ADHD may be increased among athletes who participate at the elite level. A surprising number of professional athletes have attention deficit disorder (ADHD). In fact, an estimated eight to ten percent of all pro athletes have the condition, as compared to four to five percent of the general population of adults. In the present study we evaluated ADHD symptoms in athletes who participate at the elite level. we hypothesized that ADHD symptoms would be more closely related to sport behavior. METHODS: This was a descriptive -analytical study of 63 sportsmen that participating in Olympic competition at the elite level. They completed Persian Adult ADHD Rating Scales-self-report (CAARS-S-SV). We divided them to two groups (active and inactive sportsmen). We compared ADHD symptom in 63 sportsmen with 50 subjects of scientific ...

Introduction: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the frequency of behavioral problem in pre schoolaged children with visual problem. Methods: In this expost facto study, which was selected via convenient sampling, 143 children ranging in age from 3-6 years that refer to optometry clinic for routine eye examination were evaluated. After complete ocular exams including evaluation of visual acuity with and without glasses, refraction with and without cycloplegic eye drops; we took written consent from parents, and obtained a detailed history of the children. One parent of each child completed the Conner’s Parent Rating Scale(CPRS). The CPRS scores of children with eye problem (30 cases) were compared with the normative sample (113 cases with normal eye exam) by t-test. We used ANOVA test to determine differences in outcomes between groups. Results: After complete ocular exams in order to diagnosis visual problems in 143 children 77 (54%) boys and 66(46%) girls that participated i...

Previous researches have shown that anxiety symptoms are negatively associated with measures of intelligence. However, recent findings indicate possible positive relationships between generalized anxiety disorders, worry, rumination, post event processing and intelligence. The present study examined the relationships between GAD, as well as their underlying cognitive processes including worry, rumination, and post-event processing, with verbal and non-verbal intelligence. The study was performed on two groups of subjects including those with GAD and Healthy Volunteer group. The number of 40 healthy volunteers as a control group and 41 patients with GAD as case group were selected (N=81). Verbal and non-verbal intelligence were measured with WAIS-III. Rumination and post-event processing were measured by PSWQ, RRS-BR and PEPQ, respectively. The results indicated the significant difference in the intelligence between GAD and normal groups. In other words, high degree of worry, ruminat...

Anger is defined as a psychobiological emotional state that consists of feelings varying in intensity from mild irritation or annoyance to intense fury and rage. Dysfunction in anger regulation is marker of most psychiatric disorders. The most important point about anger regulation by the individuals is how to express anger and control it. The purpose of the present study is to predict the anger expression from the anger experience in individuals with psychiatric disorder for assessment of how to express and control the anger. To this end, the number of 3,000 subjects of individuals with clinical disorders had filled in the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory–II (STAXI–II). After removing the uncertain diagnoses (900 subjects), the number of 2,100 data was considered in the analysis. Then, the computational codes based on three soft computing algorithms, including Radial Basis Function (RBF), Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Decision Tree (DT) were developed to p...

Computerized adaptive testing requires a well-designed item pool containing an appropriate number of items to build individualized tests. An optimal item pool should also contain well-balanced items that will achieve optimal item usage and low cost of item creation. One of the methods for designing the blueprint for an item pool is Reckase’s method, which is a Monte Carlo method to determine the properties of an optimal item pool. This study has been presented by the Reckase’s method for designing item pools calibrated with the three-parameter logistic model. Also, in the present simulation, the Sympson-Hetter procedure has been used to control the item exposure rate. To design simulation test items, three approaches including R, MRT, and MTI have been applied. The performance of the simulated item pools has been compared with the operational item pool by considering some evaluation criteria. The results suggest that the optimal pool designed with MRP performs the best, based on test security and measurement accuracy. It does require more items and some highly discriminating items. Tests assembled from MRP pools have smaller test-retest overlap rates and significantly lower percentages of over- and under-exposed items. The results show that the MTI design generally leads to smaller pools and contain items with lower a-parameters. Overall, Considering the Sympson-Hetter procedure, the optimally designed item pools perform better than the operational pool obtained from operational CAT
