Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is common, preventable and treatable disease is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms like dyspnea and airflow limitations. There are many objective and subjective scales which are used to assess different factors affected due to COPD like quality of life, well-being of patients, dyspnea, endurance, etc. GOLD is diagnostic criteria for diagnosis as well as for assessment of COPD. Barthel Index based on dyspnea, COPD assessment test and BODE are used to assess the dyspnea, wellbeing of patients, endurance and mortality of patients respectively in patients. To study the Correlation between Barthel Index based on dyspnea (BI-d), COPD assessment test (CAT), BODE and GOLD classification as staging systems of COPD was the aim of this study. MethodologyWith the help of convenient sampling 23 COPD patients were taken as a sample. PFT was performed for all the samples and according to PFT results their disease staging was determined. Al...

Background: COVID-19 disease is highly contagious and transmission rates are very high. In any biological disaster like this, fear, uncertainty, and stigmatization are common. Even after discharge, they may suffer from varying degrees of long-term mental health problems mainly due to isolation. Physiotherapists play an important role in the rehabilitative phase of these. Therefore, the need of this study is to understand the psychological impact caused because of the COVID-19 disease and take this into consideration while treating the patients so that the rehabilitation protocol is effective maximally. Methods: Permission was taken from the ethical committee before beginning the research. Subjects who met the inclusion criteria were selected as per voluntary enrolment. A validated self-made questionnaire was forwarded and response was obtained from 167 subjects. Descriptive data analysis was done. Results: After suffering from COVID-19 disease, out of the 167 participants that were a ...

Background: In majority of heavy industries and factories safety footwear is a mandatory safety obligation, thus a necessity for workers in industrial settings, contributing to foot problems, interfering with work capacity. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find prevalence of foot problems occurring due to safety footwear. To find the prevalence of foot problem associated with wearing safety footwear in factory employees. Methods: Factory employees working in industrial setting wearing safety footwear for prolonged duration on regular basis were included in the study. Subjects having any recent ankle and below knee fractures in last 6 months were excluded. Samples were collected from different industrial settings, with the help of a self-made questionnaire. Descriptive analysis of the data collected was done and the responses were converted into percentiles and represented in graphical form. Results: 62.50% subjects complain pain in the heel and bottom of the foot (plantar fasciit...

Objective: The present study was conducted to translate the original English version of Modified Borg Scale (CR-10) in Hindi language and validate Hindi translated version of the scale for its use in healthy Indian adult population. Subjects and Methods: An observational analytical study was conducted on 50 healthy Indian subjects (24 males, 26 females) who were recruited from a tertiary healthcare setup. The study was conducted in two parts: 1st part included translation of English version of Modified Borg Scale (CR-10) in Hindi language by cross-cultural adaptation process. 2nd part included validation of Hindi translated version of Borg CR-10 scale by correlating subjective values of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) with the objective parameters of heart rate (HR) and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) during a Bruce treadmill protocol. Results: Spearman correlation coefficient was computed between subjective and objective measures. The results of the study showed that there ...

Background: Valve problems are congenital or acquired and require surgical correction or replacement of the valve. Post surgery functional capacity reduces causing reduction in muscle strength and functional capacity. There being dearth in literature and evidences the study aimed at assessing the functional status of this population. Materials and methodology: Twenty Two participants were included who underwent a valve replacement surgery. Each participant performed sit to stand and two minute walk test. Individuals were haemodynamically stable were included. Individuals with locomotor disability were excluded from study. Results: The unpaired t test was used to compare the vital parameters between both tests. The p values of Heart rate pre was (0.37) and post (0.128). The p values of RR pre and post was (1.00) and post (0.02). The p values of systolic blood pressure were (0.961) and (1.00) respectively. The p values of saturation pre and post was (0.329) and (0.34). The p values of...

Background and Aims: Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) carries a risk for serious non-cardiac complications, such as atelectasis, hypoxia and secretion retention. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of both Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) and conventional physio therapy techniques on improving respiratory muscle strength and thus preventing the pulmonary complication after CABG in Phase –I Rehabilitation. Subjects and Method: Total 30 patients were included with average age of 59.6 ± 6.7years. They were randomly assigned into (C.G) control group (N=15) and (E.G) experimental group (N=15). In C.G patients were given chest expansion exercises, including Incentive spirometer, secretion removal maneuver and mobilization. The E.G underwent the same protocol and also the Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT). Patients were evaluated on first and seventh post-operative days for maximal inspiratory pressures (PImax), Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), oxygen saturation (SpO...

Background: Incidence of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and there of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery are increasing day by day. Presence of anxiety in post CABG surgery patients; which is noted frequently, is a major concern. The patho-chemical effects of anxiety, leads to delayed recovery period from the surgery and redevelopment of CAD in these patients. Shavasana is a yogic method for relaxation and it is proposed to reduce anxiety. It is important to assess the practical significance and the suitability of incorporating Shavasana into the early phase of cardiac rehabilitation programme after CABG surgery. Method: Sixty subjects who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting were randomly allocated into two treatment groups on post operative day 1; Group A i.e. control group which received usual phase I cardiac rehabilitation and Group B which received phase I Cardiac rehabilitation and Shavasana session for ten minutes once a day. This treatment was given for seven...

Background and purpose of the study was to compare Pursed-lip breathing and Mouth taping for relieving dyspnoea and analyse their effectiveness. Method: Subjects of age group 18-34 years and normal BMI were randomly divided into two groups, group A (n= 40) for PLB technique and group B (n= 40) for MT technique. Each subject’s Heart rate, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, Treadmill walking time and level of dyspnoea according to Modified Borg CR10 scale was assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Both the techniques showed significant improvement by virtue of an increased treadmill walking time, the subject’s dyspnoea status during the treadmill walking and lesser time for recovery to baseline vital parameters. Significant reduction in post-test RR after PLB (p=0.030) and MT (p=0.012) respectively were seen. Although, when compared to each other, MT and PLB techniques showed no significant differences with respect to the dyspnoea relieving time(p=0.08)and treadmill walki...
