His works were then withdrawn from the library of his country and his name disappeared from literary history manuals. Since 1975 he lives in Paris. Kundera's first novel, The Jocke, won the Czechoslovakian Writers Union Prize in 1968. The edition we are discussing is the second reprint of 2006, produced by Editorial SeixBarral.The purpose of this essay is to present to the reader the structure of any joke. To do this, we have divided it into five parts. In the first, we describe the joke. In the second, we analyze the subject who suffers the joke. In the third, we present what we call the hermeneuts of the joke, thereby indicating that there are always, along with a joke, very intelligent individuals who interpret it. Lo único que buscamos es, provisionalmente, exponer, lo que pensamos que es hasta este momento una de sus posibles lecturas, sospechando, incluso, que, en el futuro, nosotros mismos podamos tener una interpretación diversa a la que en este momento estamos exponiendo. No obstante, si buscamos, con nuestra lectura, interesar a hipotéticos lectores para que se comprometan con una lectura seria y apacible de tan hermosa novela.El procedimiento que hemos seguido es presentar una imagen de cada uno de los personajes de la novela; comenzamos, con Lord Harry, centrándonos en la visión hedonista que tiene este personaje de la vida. Pienso que la pregunta vino suscitada, quizá, por lo que han dicho que afirma el psicoanálisis sobre túneles y laberintos; de todos modos, fue una inquietud que ha acompañado la lectura de la novela, desde su primera página hasta la última. La segunda pregunta, que además ha servido de conducción heurística, ha sido ¿por qué Castel mata a María? Todos los lectores sabemos que la novela va a ser el relato de un asesinato, que me llevó a pensar en la Crónica de una muerte anunciada, de G. Márquez, por eso, pienso que tenemos que saber cuáles son las razones para que se pueda llevar a cabo un hecho así.Y en la novela de Sábato la pregunta es mucho más importante porque Castel piensa que la única persona en el mundo que ha comprendido sus cuadros es precisamente María, entonces uno no puede dejarse de preguntar: si esto ha sido así, cómo es posible que opte por matarla. Aparece acá y allá el esfuerzo del autor por exponer su propia lectura de dos obras filosóficas que tenemos que conocer no solo por un legítimo deseo de informarnos, sino porque estamos persuadidos de que todavía pueden aportar luz a nuestro modo de estar en la realidad.
