    The study of electric field is an important tool for lightning research. Electric Field Mills (EFMs) are electromechanical devices used to observe static atmospheric electric fields during fair weather and during storm conditions. EFM readings show significant changes in electric field due to an approaching thunderstorm and particularly, during lightning periods. Attempts to comprehend the variations prior to and after a strike has been done by observatories all over the world. This paper focuses on identifying characteristic changes in atmospheric electric field prior to a lightning strike. Both static and dynamic field changes are studied by means of literature survey and static field variations are also studied through analysis of EFM data from Sonnblick Observatory, Austria and National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), Trivandrum, Kerala.     Kerala, the green state rich with 44 rivers within an area of 38,852 km 2 and a high population density of 860/km 2 faced its worst flood of the century in mid-August 2018[1]. R ampant monsoon rainfall, landslides and the simulta neous opening of 44 dams [2] out of the 82 in the state caused devas tating floods in the coastal state of Kerala [3]. T he casualties were around 500 and the total loss of the state was calc ulated to be around 20,000 crore Rupees [4]. The Na tional Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with the Indian Army an d I dian Navy launched one of its largest rescue mi ssion, evacuating over 10,000 people. The response to the incident was lauded as a unique self-help mission d ue to the way in which the survivors and victims’ worked together in the relief and rehabilitation process. The fisher m n in the coastal state of Kerala with their sturdy fishing boats played a pivotal role in the rescue mission by shifting a la rge number of people to safer areas.

    As the world is getting more connected through cell phones, Cellular Signal Strength metrics demand more attention as parameters linked to everyday life. This paper focuses on the effects of temperature on cellular signal strength quality. In telecommunications, Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) is a measure of the power present in a received radio signal. This work looks into the variation of RSSI values over temperature and its effects on cellular communication networks. The study on the effect of temperature on RSSI is performed by measuring the temperature and signal strength over a region simultaneously. Signal strength values is collected using Android Packaging Index (API) of Android smartphones and temperature using a custom made weather station.

    Rainfall is a natural phenomenon whose temporal and geographical distribution varies widely across the globe. Wireless communications suffer a loss in network quality during rainfall which can affect the regional communication for a while. Growing concerns of climatic change also encourage to study the effects of natural phenomena like rainfall on other measurable parameters. In this work, we study the effects of rainfall on cellular signal strength at the user end, especially on RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator). RSSI is a measure of the power present in a received radio signal. Rainfall can cause natural interference over transmitting signals (radio waves) in microwave links. We use Signal Strength Android Application Programming Interface Keys popularly known as APIs to get realtime RSSI readings from smartphones. Rainfall intensity measurements are made by rain gauges. It has been concluded from the analysis that during rainfall there is a drop in RSSI values from the all-day mean.

Electric Field Mills (EFMs) are electro-mechanical devices used to observe static atmospheric electric fields during fair weather and during storm conditions. EFM readings show significant changes in electric field due to an approaching thunderstorm and particularly, during lightning periods. Attempts to comprehend the variations prior to and after a strike has been done by observatories all over the world. This paper focuses on identifying characteristic changes in atmospheric electric field prior to a lightning strike. Both static and dynamic field changes are studied by means of literature survey and static field variations are also studied through analysis of EFM data from Sonnblick Observatory, Austria and National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS), Trivandrum, Kerala. During thunderstorms and the few seconds prior to lightning, significant changes are observed in both static and dynamic electric fields. Static field changes include a magnitude rise and reversal of direction of electric field from the fair weather situation, and dynamic field changes are characterized by the occurrence of Preliminary Breakdown Pulses(PBP) which is the dynamic electrical activity inside the cloud before a strike.This study, by identifying the characteristic changes in atmospheric electric field prior to lightning strike by comparing multiple observations from different parts of the world ,points to great possibilities in the field of lightning prediction.
