Elle est dans un premier temps pratiquée par des opérateurs européens qui vont ensuite transmettre sa technique et former des opérateurs locaux.
Il faudra attendre les années 1970, et un certain recul, pour que les historiens s'y intéressent et lui redonnent sa place dans l'histoire mondiale de la photographie.
