The pocket book sized cabinet card is an underappreciated genre in photographic collecting. This lesser interest results from the cabinet card being seen as a refinement of the earlier revolutionary but tiny, four by two inch portrait photograph format known as the carte de visite. The 'cdv' (as they are known) was introduced in the late 1850s and became a worldwide craze in the 1860s-1870s.
