Born and raised by the coast in northeastern Brazil, surrounded by cocoa trees and seashells, Sandra has always loved nature. With a life split between continents, her education includes a PhD in Economics from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and being a former student at the Environmental Economics Unit of the University of Gothenburg. Once a research assistant at The Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics (1999-2006), Sandra has worked for the National Commission on Environment and as a consultant for UN-ECLAC and UNEP in Chile during the 90´s, and as an environmental economist for the Swedish EPA (2007-2011). Back in Brazil since 2011, she rejoined IPEA, where she started as a researcher in 1987. Between 2015 and 2019, she acted as scientific counselor to Instituto Escolhas.
In her free time, Sandra enjoys dancing, cooking, crocheting, and spending time with her husband and eight kids (two biological, six kitten rescues). Currently, she is also into theological studies at Instituto São Boaventura. Sandra is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Swedish, and French.
